Is the cinema really the best place to watch a film? Sure you get a huge screen and the sound quality is (usually) brilliant but there are many downsides to it as well. From the overpriced snacks to the person who sits in front of you farting, there are cirtainly aspects of the experiance that are less than enjoyable.

With Home Cinema Systems becoming cheaper than ever these days are the days of the cinema coming to an end? I think the only thing keeping cinema alive is the fact that the films come out there first, I think if they were released on DVD at the same time as in the cinema very few people would go at all.

The popcorn 70% of the time sucks really bad. Popcorn that just soaks up faux butter that squeezes when chewed. I hate it. I like soda though. But it still sucks.

Just smuggle some food in. Plain and simple.

There's also the pirates fighting vehemously to ruin the film industry [Read: Downloading movies]. So yes, movie theatres have the right to be scared.

But dead now? Of course not. Don't think it's going to be, either.

Last time I went a bunch of people got dragged out in handcuffs and made a scene and ruined a good chunk of the movie.
OK, don't smuggle food:p!

So, no, I don't like the cinema and hope it's dead soon.
Why? Because they arrest you if you try to make a bootleg recording of it?

No I don't think it's going to die in the next decade atleast, I think people still like the feeling of going to the cinema and I doubt you can get the same experience at home.

Personally I like to go to movies alot even though it's pretty expensive (10€). And I never buy popcorn at the movies, just soda.

I love the cinema! My family had been movie hopping since I was a kid, and we'd usually watch 3-4 movies at a time, making a whole day out of it. Ah, those were fun times.

There had been rare times when I went to the theater and only watched 1 movie. That was mostly last year though when I watched Serenity 5 different times.

I really like going to the movies because I love watching movies on the big screen, etc, but yeah, I don't see every movie that I'd like to because of how expensive it is, and I certainly never buy any pop or popcorn.

depends on the movie. most the time it's easier to just rent it. especially with the blockbuster movie deals like 2 movies a day for less than $30 a month. can't really beat that deal.

I've been known to rant about the cinema.

First of all, the most recent development that's killed going to the movies is cell phones. Or more specifically texting. It doesn't matter what theater you go to, what time you go, or what movie you're seeing. There will always be multiple people who open their phones and start texting away. And every single time someone opens their phones to text, it ruins the part of the movie you're watching because there's this sudden painfully bright light that's extremely distracting. If you absolutely have to text, turn off that light, or go outside and do it. Or at least be somewhat discreet about it.

What really annoys me is when teenagers get up and wave their cell phone lights to signal to their little groups during the movie. :¬:

Secondly, babies. Seriously, why the flying **** would you bring your baby to the movies? It's not gonna watch the movie. You're not doing it a favor. You're just gonna make it cry because of all the people and loud noises.

Hire a babysitter. Ask a relative. Stay the **** home.

Third, loud kids, especially when they're in a movie they're not supposed to be in. When I go to a movie that's rated G, I know what I'm in for. But when I go to freakin Silent Hill and there are kids being loud and parents doing nothing about it, that's when it pisses me off. If your kid really wants to see a movie that's rated R or PG-13 (i.e. Star Wars eps 3) wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it. If your kids are too impatient to wait, smack their a**es with a belt so they'll stop whining. :p

Sometimes when I go to a theater, even the well-known expensive ones, they have a faulty sound system that cuts out during the movie. If it cuts out during an intense scene, it can ruin it and be incredibly annoying.

Cinema has been around for a hundred years, and I don't think it's going to die anytime soon. I have a 32" HDTV, but I'm still going to go to the theaters to see movies, simply because they come out there first. The only thing we can hope for is that there will be a massive change of standards, or some sort of invention that makes going to the movies more enjoyable.

I don't go to the cinema that often. I'll only go if it's something I really want to see, otherwise I'll usually wait until it comes out on dvd.

You can't properly 'discuss' it like this. "There are more, better and expensive, home theater systems out there. Will cinema die?"

We should take a look at numbers instead. They're not dead now and doesn't seem like that. I wouldn't say the majority of cinema goers has a HD TV home theater set.

Quoted for emphasis. I hate the going to the theater. I get within a hairs-breath of flipping out on someone with a cellphone, or some loud mouth asshat, or the fact that I paid $9.75 to listen to *BEEP BEEP BEEP NEW TEXT MESSAGE* a million and one ****ing times. Though the one time I spent the $3.75 on a small pop, it ended up being the best $3.75 ever: I beamed a kid chatting on his cell phone dead in the head.

Most films don't require a HD TV to make them a normal TV will do just fine. some good speakers would be a bonus but 5.1 ia not neccesary at all. it is only action flicks that you need HD and really good sound for.

And I'm sure the majority of cinema goers don't have a HD TV home theater set, people that have one wouldn't go to the cinema! :p

I have no idea what movie theaters you people are going to, but apparently the 2 that I frequent are the exception. I have VERY few complaints about the movie patrons when I go.

I LOVE the movie theater. It's absolutely one of my favorite things to do on any given weekend. Nothing beats seeing a great movie on a giant screen with some killer surround sound.

I love the movie theatre too.

I've been to the movie theatre at least 6 times in the past two months, I am going later this week to see Snakes on a Plane. Though, I've seen Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3 of those times. :p

And next year, it will be a relatively productive year. For the top of my head:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean III
  • Spiderman III
  • Transformers
  • Harry Potter V
  • Ghost Rider

Those are just off the top of my head.

I agree, I have had a few bad experiences at the movies with loud children, etc, but most of the time it's a great atmosphere.

Shoot, I still have a great deal of movies I'm really stoked to see in theaters this year.

  • Little Miss Sunshine
  • The Illusionist
  • Crank
  • Idiocracy
  • The Protector
  • Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny
  • Fearless
  • Beerfest
  • Borat
  • Casino Royale

Those are the movies which I'm almost guaranteed to see, and there will probably be others. I would be extremely sad to lose movie theaters.

The closest, decent, theatre to me is always full of ignorant hillbilly ****s.

Need I say more on why I don't go to the cinema?

Besides, what girl wouldn't like being taken back to her date's house to watch Muppet Treasure Island on a nice home theater setup.

Main reasons why I go to the theatre:

1) Social.

2) It's out before the dvd.

I like the theatre and all, because its a nice thing to go to with some friends. Still, if the dvd came out at the same time, I'd just get it from netflix more likely than not. There's other things to do with friends. :)
