Black Knight of Keno Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/5282440.stm This is pure idiocy to me. Think of all those who still think we have nine planets. Why, oh why...? I really don't see the point in this. Just make everything more confusing than before this does
Commander Obi-Wan Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Quite pointless. Why Pluto? Just why?
Pho3nix Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 That's just...stupid. We have 9 planets, period.
Black Knight of Keno Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 Quite pointless. Why Pluto? Just why? It seems Pluto is too big to be a planet, so they're going to start calling it a dwarf-planet... Pfft... Idiots
Lightsaberboy Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 My Very Eager Mother Just Sent Us Nine... nine what now??? AHHHH!!! The sentence is incomplete!!
IG-64 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Dang it. I've known they've been thinking about doing this for a long time but I never thought they'd actually do it. I've always said they should keep pluto as a planet and use pluto as a planetary status marker so that anything discovered that's smaller than pluto is not a planet, and anything larger than pluto is a planet. Instead they do this. You can't just demote pluto after 76 years.
Writer Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Now, now, the sentence is not incomplete. We'll just live in denial of the 'scientific' decision. Your very eager mother just sent you nine planets... nothing to worry about.
TiE23 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I heard that if Pluto stayed a planet then Charon, Ceres, and 'Xena' would all have to be classified as planets, too. Ceres is a rather large hunk of rock in the asteroid belt and 'Xena' is a thin located far beyond Pluto. IMO, I don't care, I've never like Pluto; it's always sucked.
Lightsaberboy Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Now, now, the sentence is not incomplete. We'll just live in denial of the 'scientific' decision. Your very eager mother just sent you nine planets... nothing to worry about. it's actually supposed to be pizzas tho, but whatever... Pluto never gets any love. In Disney he has to stay in the doghouse, while Mickey hangs out with another intelligent, talking dog Goofy. And now in science, it's demoted. Ahhhh. I guess now we'll have to use: My Very Eager Mother Just Started Using Narcotics.
IG-64 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 There are 7 moons larger than Pluto. There are also 2 moons larger than Mercury. The only thing larger than Pluto that's not a moon or planet is "Xena." Pluto is twice as large as the largest minor planet in the asteroid belt. I propose that Pluto should stay a planet, and that "Xena" should be made an official planet (and given an official name). And that anything henceforth discovered that is larger than Pluto and is not a moon should be given planet status; and anything smaller than pluto should not be given planet status. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_solar_system_objects_by_radius http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto#Mass_and_size Here's a list of other dwarf planets Pluto will be joining: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_planet And in other news, pluto's 2 new moons are called Nix and Hydra.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 NO EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT ASTRONOMY IS BASED ON A LIE!!!!!!
Alegis Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 It's not just the size that matters but the orbit. I never considered Pluto a planet anyways, and with its own moon etc it was about to take ridiculous proportions. (ARE YOU ROUND?) Besides why is it "stupid" to finally properly classify these things Ignorant fools. I find this childish sympathy for pluto completely absurd. It is NOT the animated dog, grow up. That's just...stupid. We have 9 planets, period. OK MISTAR OVERLORD Die Pluto, DIE
Tyrion Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Easy for me; now there's only 8 planets to remember.
Halo_92 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 This is one of the most idiotic decisions I've ever heard of . (The pluto not being a "real Planet" one.)
El Sitherino Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 This thread makes me sad in ways I never even imagined. I also find it incredibly hilarious, so kudos.
RoxStar Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 The article that I read claims that we now have 12 plants, and that pluto and charion are a double planet system, orbiting each other and the sun. I like it that way. The article cited some prague thing as the source for this information, I guess they changed their minds. **** you prague scientists
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 **** you scientists They just met in Prague.
IG-64 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Ignorant fools. I find this childish sympathy for pluto completely absurd. Oh, don't be so pretentious. I have good reason to be disconcerted over the demotion of Pluto's planetary status. I just don't think it's fair to make such an important decision that put's their "scientific qualifications" over Pluto's substantial cultural and historical significance.
RoxStar Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 They just met in Prague. I know, I was attempting to be funny.
ET Warrior Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Pluto has no significance as a planet. It's not like changing it from a planet to a dwarf-planet means it's not there.
IG-64 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Pluto has no significance as a planet. It's not like changing it from a planet to a dwarf-planet means it's not there. No, it just means it's tossed into the bin of throw-down dwarf planets no one cares about.
TK-8252 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 It seems Pluto is too big to be a planet, so they're going to start calling it a dwarf-planet... Pfft... Idiots Nope, it's too small to be a planet. That's why it would be a dwarf-planet. Time to rewrite the science books...!
