JediKnight707
I'm sure there are thousands of these threads, and this one might get shut down, but I'm just making the cliche "Good Movies" thread. What are your peoples favorite movies that are good? Some of these I've seen recently (though some are old, just never saw them) and some are just my favorites: Taxi Driver - This was Martin Scorsese/Robert DeNiro/Paul Schrader's first film and it is just great. The writing is absolutely brilliant is portrayed very well by RDN and MS. Citizen Kane - This movie is a rosebud. Great film, great writing, great directing, great everything. The Prestige - Oh my goodness this is one of the best movies I've seen as of late. I was floored by the ending. The effects were great for a movie that was cheap to make ($40 million, compared to SM3's $258 million) Apocalypse Now (Redux) - Francis Ford Coppola making another classic. Terribly long, but that can be forgiven. Raging Bull - Another MS + RDN + PS. A boxing classic The Godfather (I/II/III) - I was hesitant about watching the first, worried that it really wouldn't live up to the hype of being number one movie on iMDB (my house of worship). But I read the book first and loved it, and the movie portrayed it in such a brilliant way. Al Pacino and Marlon Brando had some of the best acting performances of all time. Pulp Fiction - This movie is undescripable. Its my brother and father's favorite movie, and it's my third favorite (behind Saving Private Ryan and Fight Club). This movie has everything I want in a movie. Action, comedy, and something that makes me walk away going "wow. That was awesome." Saving Private Ryan - This movie has some great war cinematography (camera work) second only two Children of Men. Almost made me cry the first time I saw this. Platoon - Watched this movie so many times its in the 100's. Something about this movie that I just love (along with millions of other people). If the machine breaks down, we break down. Fight Club - The twist at the end is bigger than The 6th Sense. Team America: World Police - America, **** yeah! Dawn of the Dead - This movie used to scare me so much, but I love it now. Zach Snyder (director) could have messed this movie up by making a total gore fest, with guns everywhere. But he didn't. Donnie Darko - This movie is an epic that is unappreciated. American Beauty - Some great writing, and some great acting, and some great directing. Deserved Best Picture. Children of Men - (special note, this movie has the best cinematography I've ever seen) <- Don't need to say more. Lord of War - For an independent movie, this one is surely great. Too bad it wasn't sponsored by any big companies. Amonsgt others edit: Better? <-- MUCH. Thank you for taking the time to do so, it really is appreciated ~ Cz

The Seeker
Ahhhh, the favorite *insert generic pop culture activity/item* thread. The bane of my existence at Lucasforums since the first time I misread it as a "discuss favorite movie thread" rather than realizing that it is a "create uninteresting, uber long list of titles without really talking about them" thread. I get more insight on great movies from rottentomatoes.com. At least you get a review instead of just a title. Pass

Titanius Anglesmith
Star Wars I, II, III, IV, V, and VI - I don't think I need to explain these. Pirates of the Caribbean I, II, and III - Incredible acting, special effects, and action, along with some very creative plots. It doesn't get much better than these movies right here. Lord of the Rings I, II, and III - Similar reasons as Potc, though not quite as good. There were just no characters that stood out to me, unlike characters like JacK Sparrow and Barbossa from PotC. Star Trek (all but #1) - The humor is what draws me to these. Nothing better than those classic Spock or Data moments. I love all of them, except for the first one, which is easily the most boring movie I've ever watched. Men In Black - Will Smith in alien butt-kicking action, along with a great performance from Vincent D'Onofrio as The Bug. Jurassic Park I and II - Classics, with great special effects for their time (and even today really). I and II were great, but III just sucked. It's plot was completely incoherent and it felt like they made it only for the money and didn't care about the quality. Still, it's suckiness doesn't take away from I and II's awesomeness. Terminator 2 - ARNIE!!!! Plus, Robert Patrick is undoubtedly the best "bad terminator" ever. Independence Day - More Will Smith in more alien butt-kicking action. Combined with Jeff Goldblum, it makes for one hell of a movie. Happy Gilmore, Anger Management, Big Daddy - Adam Sandler... need I say more? Forrest Gump - Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen, and Tom Hanks easily gave the best performance I've ever seen in a movie. His "encounters" with history were extremely well done and hysterical. Roots - Well, this one is a mini-series, but could be thought of as 6 movies. There are some pretty graphic depictions of slavery along with some history and a good look at what life was like then. It's actually the only movie/TV series that has ever made me cry on more than 1 occasion.
Totenkopf
Well, a few more as follows: Patton--great biopic, role won Scott an Oscar, but he snubbed the Academy by not showing up for it. Dr. Strangelove--hilarious satire of Cold War gone bad. Scott was hysterical as an American general in this pic, with Peter Sellers carrying 3 roles (Strangelove, the US President and an RAF officer). JEJ (voice of Vader) also had a role in this film. In B&W. The "Man with No Name" spaghetti westerns (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly). Clint Eastwood's performances as an amoral good guy of sorts set the stage (or at least marked the rise) of the popular antihero concept. The Great Escape--A great WW2 movie about a massive escape that is based on actual events. Probably made famous by McQueens motorcycle jump attempt to avoid recapture by German troops. MASH--great satire of Vietnam era, but set in the Korean conflict. Series followed. Tae Guk Gi--Award winning Korean movie about the Korean War and its affect on the relationship of two close brothers. Dirty Harry--Eastwood reprises the antihero role that solidified his rise in Hollywood. This shouldn't need any explanation. Suffice it to say he wasn't nicknamed "Dirty" for nothing. Followed by a series of progressively weaker sequels. Das Boot--German war movie about submarine combat in the 2nd WW. Demonstrates that the fortunes of war can indeed be quite capricious. If you think your job sucks, just remember that the fatality rate of Uboat crews hovered around 82%, one of the highest of any branch of service throughout the war. Predator--One of Ahnuld's best films. Set in central American jungle. Ugly ETs, testosterone oozing out the pores, 'nuff said. As far as miniseries go: Band of Brothers. 10 episode arc following training of paratroopers to fall of Germany.

The Seeker
Why would you post a comment saying how you don't like a thread? Wouldn't it just be easier to not comment at all and leave your opinion to yourself? Well yes actually, it would. Your wonderful advice is a standpoint I have taken for the last twenty-some of these identical threads, and since not speaking out has never changed anything, I figured I would see how it would feel for speaking out to not change anything. And actually, it is slightly more satisfying than not speaking out. Now I know. And kudos to Totenkopf for actually making his post of favorites interesting to read. That type of post in these threads is exactly what I was hoping for. So, I guess speaking out did help a bit. while I agree with you that i like to see more than just a random list.. try to be a little less acidic next time.. hehehe. However, yes, Totenkopf's post is ideal, thank you for 'speaking out' ~ Cz

Darth InSidious
300. You watch. You like. Ugh. Hollywood trash, IMO. All camped up gibberish and scant historical accuracy. A real film is The Maltese Falcon (1941). Sharp acting, dialogue, direction; approrpriate music, a reasonable pace and a plot that twists and turns like a...twisty turny thing. The '46 version of The Big Sleep comes in close second with some again very witty dialogue, good direction and some superb acting. Totenkopf has already recommended it, but I thought I'd add a second endorsement for Dr. Strangelove. Well worth watching, if only for the magnificent 'phone conversation between the US President and the Russian premier. Another absolutely superb film is 2001: A Space Odyssey. A lot of people come away from it and seem not to understand it, and so reject it as a bad film. This, though is to misunderstand it. The point is that you don't understand it straightaway, that there are layers of meaning, that interpretation and understanding are individual. Finally, I think that Memoirs of a Geisha deserves a mention. One of the best films of recent times, if not the best. Simply superb. Watch it, and you'll know why. Cygnus Q'ol
The Outlaw Josey Wales is very good movie, but Unforgiven is Eastwood at his best, both as a director and actor. I can hardly argue. Loved that one also. However, in The Unforgiven, we uncover his character's legend as the story itself unfolds. Tales from the Scoldfield Kid and Ned allow us a peek into his character's sinister past. A past that Eastwood himself expects us to already be familliar with because of the Sergio Leone films that had come before and the success of Josey Wales. In The Outlaw Josey Wales we ride along *with* the character on his quest and get to see his legend born right before our eyes. Lots more gun action and confrontations, while Unforgiven had a tremendous build-up and one confrontation. One thing's for certain, in all of Eastwood's films, the attention to detail and committment to emotional content is premium. Carpetbagger: "Do you honestly think you can shoot all those men down before they shoot you. Oh no, Mr. Wales, There is a thing in this country called justice." As Wales calmly slides his long rifle from it's shorse strap, he then gently rests it on a tree stump, facing the river and the approaching ferryboat filled with Red-leg Union Soldiers. As he lifts up the longsight and begins to peer through, he spits a streak of chaw and mutters, "Well Mr. Carpetbagger, we have a thing in this territory called, ...the Missouri Boat Ride." Pho3nix
There are way too many to list. But here's a few "must see" ones: Star Wars 1-6 Lord of the Rings trilogy Back to the Future 1-3 Jurassic Park 1-2 Terminator 1-2 Predator 1-2 Alien 1-4 Robocop 1-2 Ghostbusters 1-2 I can name others too. But the list would become too long.
igyman
Good movies, huh? Let's see, here are some movies that I think are definitely worth watching more than once: Pulp Fiction - I'm not a big fan of Tarantino movies, but this one is really something. Definitely enjoyable and worth watching. 300 - For all those who want to take a break from the completely serious stuff and relax with an action packed movie with a pretty well done story. Forrest Gump - One of the best movies I've ever seen. This one has it all. Green Mile - same as above. Fight Club - A very intriguing movie with a non-standard plot. American History X - I think this movie did a very good job addressing the issue of racism and intolerance. Hatred only brings more hatred. mimartin
One thing's for certain' date=' in all of Eastwood's films, the attention to detail and commitment to emotional content is premium.[/quote'] One of the things I like about most of Clint Eastwood’s movies is the flawed or reluctant hero that he has always portrayed so well. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Hang ‘Em High,” “Two Mules for Sister Sara,” and “High Plains Drifter” all magnetically played upon that theme. (those that want to hear unforgettable theme music check out “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” soundtrack) After your post yesterday I was inspired to go home any watch “The Outlaw Joey Wells” however I got sidetracked and picked up another Eastwood movie from 1969 called “Paint Your Wagon.” While this is more of Lee Marvin vehicle, if you can get past it is a musical and both Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing in it, it is a very funny movie. It is a story of gold rush California when men made there own laws as they went along. In other words greed, lust and booze with singing on the side. The funniest chase scene every shot for a movie. Clint isn’t that bad of a singer as proven in “Paint Your Wagon” and “Honkytonk Man.”
JediKnight707
Ooh igyman hit the nail on the head when he described American Histroy X. 'Cause of the that movie (and Fight Club) Ed Norton is my favorite actor. Damn was he good in those two movies. AHX is so awesome. The writer (also wrote Blow and the script for the game Scarface: The World is Yours) wrote it in such a way that its brutally honest and it tells you everything you need to know about Tom Metzger and racism. ****in' butthole.
