Gaming Mouse Recommendation

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a good gaming mouse. Right now I have a logitech wireless mouse that came with my keyboard, has 3 buttons and just isn't what I want for gaming. It lags a bit too much for my liking and seems to run out of batteries very quickly which has happened several times while I'm playing.

The game I'm mostly wanting this for is World of Warcraft so I'd especially like any recommendations from people who play MMORPGs. The company I'm looking at is Razor but they have several models that look good. Here's the page with their mice: http://www.razerzone.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_17

I think the ones out of those to consider are the copperhead, deathadder or krait but I'll take any suggestions. I like the copperhead and deathadder for their number of buttons but the krait says its specifically designed for mmos and rts games so I'm not really sure which would be best. One thing I don't understand about the krait is that it says the wheel has 24 individual click positions, I don't get how that works. So let me know if anybody uses any of these mice or if they really like their mouse of a different brand.

I picked up a copperhead because I was having the same problem as you were. It's solved my mouse lag and battery problems and it's worth dealing with an extra wire on my laptop. The only thing I miss is the tilting scroll wheel that I had on the logitech, and the fact that it's taller/bigger, so it doesn't fit my smaller hands as well as the notebook mouse does. However, the speed and precision more than make up for those losses. Make sure that if you have Vista, you pick up a vista-compatible mouse. I wasn't paying attention to that when I bought the mouse, but Razer had released some software to make it work with Vista so it worked out pretty well.

Thanks Jae. Coincidentally my mouse batteries died again today so I definitely think its time to end this. I'm still running XP so I shouldn't have any driver issues. Thinking either the copperhead or the deathadder.

I think saw this Razor-Deathadder brand kind of mouse. I also think it was almost cheap. Around $20, I think. I found it in a computer store somewhere. There's also this other mouse they were selling for only $10 in the same shop. It has the same button layout as the Razer, as in it had two buttons at the side as well, only the buttons link to the left-Alt key (at least in Painkiller; In browsers, it functions as a back and forward page button). In fact, I'm using it right now. Unfortunately, I think it's a local/foreign brand here, so I think you might not be able to find it there. The brand's name is Delux. It's a right-handed mouse with a ridiculously bright mousewheel light, not to mention the mousewheel itself is rather large. The body is also pretty large, but since my hands are large, it fits. It's wired, so you sacrifice a little flexibility for a constant power supply.

Razer vs. Logitech is a pretty heated competition when it comes to gaming mice. I've used a Logitech as long as I can remember so I'm a bit one sided on the matter, and I myself have a Logitech G5. However, the argument that seems commonplace is that the Logitech mice are for people who like to have their whole palm on the mouse, while the Razer mice are for people who like to control their mouse with their fingers. While it's probably out of your price range, being that the mouse is near $100, the Logitech G9 is their newest and comes packed with pretty much everything, from adjustable dpi, to an adjustable weight system, and new is grip variations, where they pack on different grip rigs for the mouse. Some arguments that I've heard is that Razer uses an "on-the-fly" dpi adjustment system to change the dpi to fit the needs of your game automatically, while Logitech has it set up so that you can prescribe certain dpi settings and then change them yourself in game with the press of a button on the mouse. Again I'm biased so I tend to like the way Logitech does it better, but I have friends that swear by their Razers. However, I don't play much MMORPGs, I played SWG while I had a free pass at it but didn't like it, so my preferences lean towards FPS, RPG and RTS games. I also have a friend that uses a Trackball for FPS games... which is absurd, and I have another friend who wont use anything that isn't a rollerball. I'd say as far as PC gaming goes, you're usually best suited to what you're used to, but for fast paced games, wireless mice are generally not a good option to remain competitive. My one bit of advice though, is that switching from one mouse to another, may feel awkward at first, but just give it time. Hope some of this garble helps some.

Ive tried the Razer mice, and I dont like the way they handle, they are shaped wierd too. I tried the Logitech cordless Revolution, and I had so much mouse lag it was annoying.

Currently I have the G5 laser mouse (logitech), and love it. It has a side-scroll wheel, 2 extra buttons (default are dpi switchers), and two left-side mouse buttons.

I also had the MX518, it broke down after a while of using it, I liked it though.

Logitech Mx518. A perfect mix of elegance, comfort and good performance.
this would be the mouse that i've been using for over a year and a half on two computers: one running XP, and on my current Vista machine.

i think you can still find it in most places, and at $45, its a lot cheaper than most gaming mice on the market. The mouse is comfortable, and it has adjustable sensitivity which makes it useful if you play a lot of shooters on your computer (twitch happy for the games, and then press a button to bring it down to manageable smoothness for the desktop).

overall, its an excellent pick at a good price.

and a word of advice about DPI: the more you have doesn't have any huge impact on performance once you start getting above 1200 DPI. once the sensitivity gets that high (or higher), you'll hardly notice the difference. ;)
