Nothing against Half-Life, but Gordon is the quintessential Player Avatar, it's worse than calling Exile or Revan your favorite. Mostly it is possible because of what he does in the game, how hard the game may be and the sequel itself and the mass amount of mods it spawned. Most people cannot imagine Half-Life without Gordon Freeman now. Even mods such as Opposing Force and Blue shift still show Freeman at points. Most people have trouble viewing themselves as the player character. So Valve comes up with the idea of naming the character but never viewing it. So technically their favorite character is themselves. But it may go back to my remark earlier that he is a college graduate and a hero to the nerds of the world.
