ThunderPeel2001
Hmmm. Okay, I did a similar test using the painting of the boat... The images are almost identical. Maybe the differences in technology wouldn't have made any impact at all. The TOP image is taken from the painting, reduced the actual game size, and the number of colours reduced. A sharpen filter was added, too. The BOTTOM image is from an actual screengrab.
ThunderPeel2001
Well there is some on the internet obviously, and a lot can be done with Photoshop too. Er, no. The images I've used in the last couple of posts are ALL we have Also, as for using photoshop to "res-up" the existing artwork, the filters in ScummVM already do that pretty well. I'm afraid we're stuck, waiting for a MI2: Special Edition...
LordTrilobite
I think I've seen more of them on Scummbar.com though. Let me check... Edit: or on second thought, maybe you're right. Still, editing in photoshop, partly by hand will be a big difference from the simple blurring filter in ScummVM.

To see any noticeable difference I think you may as well redraw the whole graphic, IMO.
LordTrilobite
Maybe I'll give one screenshot a go, see how it turns out.

Laserschwert
With some hands-on work Photoshop might be of help here: Still I think, right now isn't the best time to start such a project, because and official MI2:SE might still become real... LordTrilobite
I was having a go at this pic, but your attempt is a lot better than what I did so far. That 'shop looks really good btw.
Laserschwert
Another one: Repainting some of the detail-areas might be enough. Still, we can never get these big enough for full HD resolution without the original paintings to scan.
LordTrilobite
What technique are you using, cause I've been trying some filters and touching up some details by hand, but it doesn't come close to yours.
Nickelstein
I can see this working out but how about you use the original sprites with the new background?
ThunderPeel2001
WOW! Holy ****! I totally didn't expect it to look anywhere near that good... Jeez, LS, you're some sort of PS god!!! I'd be very interested to see you try your hand at Captain Dread's to see how it compares to the original painting... I know it can't look quite as good, I'm wondering if it'd be close! Benny
Agreed, LS' ones look amazing. Good job LS!

ThunderPeel2001
Wow, you're right. As amazing as your other ones are, a HD scanned version from the paintings would still add an awful lot!
Udvarnoky
I don't know exactly what the best method would be for LucasArts to update MI2, but I do know that locating all of the original illustrations and rescanning them in high resolution is the only correct first step. The problem is that Purcell, Chan and company continued the artistic process after the images were digitized. Still, it's pretty clear that the original images are the starting point that should be used. (And they should also be made available separately as a gallery or something. Seriously.) Let's just hope MI1: SE sells well enough that any of this talk becomes relevant.
ThunderPeel2001
Come on, LS, what's the third-party filter you're using?
Laserschwert
I was using Redfield Perfectum.
Nickelstein
We shouldn't be assuming UNTIL the game comes out.
Laserschwert
We shouldn't be assuming UNTIL the game comes out. That's not what he said, and I don't understand, why you're SO MUCH against speculations of any kind. Furthermore, when the game comes out, there's no reason to assume anything anymore.
ThunderPeel2001
Lol, that's a very good point: It'd be impossible to assume anything once the game has been released Thanks for the link, LS, that's a very effective filter.
Nickelstein
We don't even have a release date for SOMI:SE and most importantly:IT ISN'T EVEN OUT YET. EDIT:SOMI:SE is coming out on July 15th, check 1UP.com.
elTee
Well spotted, hopefully this information's accurate.
Fealiks
I might have a go at totally repainting one of the MI2 backgrounds on Photoshop at some point (just for fun if nothing else ).
LordTrilobite
I was using Redfield Perfectum. No wonder my tries failed horribly compared to yours thanks for the link. Edit: Yeah that plugin really helps. Here's my go at the outside of LeChuck's fortress. For twice the size the filter works really well, but when you start scaling more, you'll really start to see the lack of detail.
