Platypus Man
First of all, I am reffering to the novels. There is no way I would ever refer to the dreaded Eragon movie :S. I am curious to see which series you, oh honored members of LucasForums, believe to be ther greater. Ping
I've never read Eragon, so by default I go with LOTR.
Platypus Man
Eragon's pure Epicness. Very well written. But LOTR comes close.

Astor
Eragon's pure Epicness. Very well written. No it isn't. It's not even close to Lord of the Rings.
N-5/Prudii
Seriously??? LOTR, obviously! Also, consider the fact that Eragon, and almost ALL today's fantasy stories take inspiration from LOTR... You should also realize that LOTR was written by a WW1 vet university prof. with year of life experience, and Eragon was written by some 20 year old kid? Liverandbacon
I can't believe we are even having this conversation. QFT. I don't understand how "which is better" could even form in someone's mind when comparing the two.

You should also realize that LOTR was written by a WW1 vet university prof. with year of life experience, and Eragon was written by some 20 year old kid? Not that any of that would matter if Eragon actually was better than LOTR. Which it, of course, isn't. Actually, there are more than a few fantasy books that are more of a challenge to LOTR than Eragon is. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series comes to mind. HdVaderII
Eragon vs. Lord of the Rings? What thought process could even lead to such a question? One is a brilliant masterwork. The other... Not so much.
Dread Advocate
LotR. while i am an avid fan of both, LotR comes first because its LotR. my only issue with the Inheritance Cycle is its plot is almost exactly the same as Star Wars and the names of people and places are TOO similar to LotR names. i dont belive i need post any examples. Nedak
I've read part of Eragon...horribly boring book. How could you even compare LOTR to Eragon? That's like comparing Shakespeare to Twilight.
ChAiNz.2da
LotR obviously... (given the choices.. hehe) but Tolkein has had some stinkers too. The Silmarillion comes to mind... major snoozer of a book

Ogriv83
For me it has to be Lord of the Rings. Truly a classic and may never be beat for sheer value of impact it has.

The LOTR Poetry sections, strange nudity-hippie stuff Tom Bombadil and entire family line explanations when people meet can get tiresome yes.
