Someone did try to replicate Grog with all the deadly ingredients removed, but it ended up being just alcohol with a whole lot of pepperoni which is just...awful.
-
For me, it's the battery acid and red dye no.2 that really gives it the unique flavour not seen in normal Grog.

"The Foods of Monkey Island" would be the title of a new game when we've really scraped the bottom of the barrel (of monkeys) with potential options.

That's certainly a valid concern, as something I've long lamented about many modern adventure games is how overwritten the dialog can be. It often feels like the writers are too impressed with themselves and lack any sort of editing. I always appreciated how the LucasArts adventures in general were punchier. However, it's also possible that the large amount of lines has more to do with the scale of the story and where it takes us, with more interactable items and lots of locations, rather than a whole lot of overwritten dialog in smaller spaces. I certainly hope for that.

Oh yeah, the rationale for them being there totally works, it's a great idea actually! I just wonder if the balance might be off with the familiar-to-new content in one chapter. Then it becomes a dilemma of "do we get rid of Murray here" and I wouldn't swap him for them , especially with what we ended up getting. You're definitely right on the money about returning characters being better in unfamiliar territory. It's why I've always been more on board for returning characters than returning islands in this series. I just know that you can still go overboard with familiar faces; I think current Star Wars has been relying on that a little too heavily with certain projects.

That's certainly an interesting idea, though I think that ulimately it is much better to worldbuild and introduce new characters wherever possible. Like you said, Murray served the familiarity itch-scratching, but having the Men of Low Moral Fiber there too might've been a little too much. I also never found them to be that big of a highlight in the original 2 games, and the Brotherhood were actually way more engaging and funny to me. Don't get me wrong, they're still good characters, and I'd be pleased to see them in Return, but they were always kinda just there and never served any story purpose. Hell, in MI1 you don't ever have to engage them in conversation at all.

The manatee swallowing the ship was probably the best cliffhanger of Tales next to the one in Chapter 4. I remember thinking "this is what Guybrush gets for riding one on Jamabalaya Island" 😂 I get that it's maybe a bit goofy, but I actually like that. I've noticed that others have said that they prefer MI when it's more dry, but I also love it when the games committ to something truly dumb. It's why, despite the retcon, I kinda love the giant monkey robot in Escape. What's that? This isn't the unpopular opinion thread? Oops, my mistake, carry on then 😜

This really makes me wonder what they're going to do with that courthouse in Return, given that Ron has been very clear about not wanting to retread any story beats from Curse-Tales. That judge is definitely not Grindstump, he's got a very different look, and obviously it's described as "a chilly new island" so we're not revisitng Flotsam at all (and I think we've covered everything we possible could from there within Tales itself). Out of all the screenshots released, I think that's the one that has me the most intrigued, because it seems to be an entirely new place, unlike the other screenshots that are very obviously evoking the nostalgia for the old games, being that they are from familiar locations. But yeah, if Guybrush isn't on trial, I wonder why he's there in the new game. So many questions, I'm constantly channelling my inner Marius and exclaiming "I wonder what happens!'

For sure. But did I have Macklunkey as my text alert after I saw it? You bet!
-
How true. Won't go into it to keep this thread on topic and avoid the rabbit hole, but suffice it to say, the time is certainly right for more MI news to take my mind off certain developments. You better deliver, Nintendo 😂 But yes, very much looking forward to Marius' video

The best part is in the Disney Plus version: Greedo now says "Macklunkey" for no reason before they shoot

I don't think I've done a proper playthrough of AVS or Ghost Pirates since my first go when they came out. I remember them being visually good but very heavy on dialog. Still, I backed AVS Year One on Kickstarter despite it not being successfully funded cause I was interested in seeing more of the world. It sounds as though Bill Tiller has finally acquired the rights to do his second part which is exciting. That's probably the game's biggest weakness, it truly does feel incomplete. It also just straight up doesn't start without dgVoodoo, like no menu, nothing, just a hanging item in your task manager. Maybe that's been fixed by now, idk. Ghost Pirates on the other hand I remember just making me wish I was playing a new Monkey Island game, I feel like doing a pirate comedy adventure game is a pointless endeavour when it's been perfected 5 times over (soon to be 6) in one series; you're never going to do better than the world of Guybrush and friends. I'd actually be more interested in a pirate adventure game that comitted to being more gritty and played completely straight, with all the romanticism stripped out to show a more historically accurate depiction; that would be worthwhile. Ghost Pirates and others like it are just Diet Monkey Island which doesn't interest me, if I want that I'll just play the real deal. I feel like this post has leaned too negatively for an Appreciation thread, so I'll end on a more positive note; The idea of finding objects that you can't realistically pick up and take with you but will "keep in mind" being added to your inventory is a genius design choice, I love it.

I hope that whatever the interface is, it allows for some interesting puzzles and a good amount of experimentation/exploration. I feel like there needs to be a good balance between streamlining the gameplay and having a satisfying amount of options. We do know at least from Ron's musings on his blog that he's not a fan of just a single click to interact, or what he called the "poke" verb (meaning "poke" this and see what happens, wash, rinse, repeat); I think that's probably Tales' biggest weakness, even though I'd still argue it has plenty of memorable puzzles.

Amazing work, once again! Can they just hire you to work on the remasters from now on?
-
Yeah that was kinda how I saw it if there was any intention at all. It certainly doesn't come near the Leisure Suit Larry levels of "humour".

I'd rather not get banned for sexually explicit content 😂 I'm trying to be subtle guys come on 😜

When you go to the Mysts O'Thyme and are faced with future Guybrush, one of the numbers he can say you're thinking of is 69. The line delivery sounds exactly like someone who finds that number funny for NSFW reasons. Maybe it's just my inner teenage boy hearing things, but it always sounded like the voice director knew what they were doing when they had Dom read that line.
-
I can't wait for more outbursts of joy! It seems to me that whenever there's radio silence about something, especially with a Disney property, the next bit of news is just an onslaught of exciting content. I'm hopeful for that, even though I mostly just want a release date haha.
-
Since we're on page 69, does anyone else find the delivery of that number as a guess in the Mysts O'Tyme in Escape kinda...suggestive?
-
Another thing worth mentioning is that there are bugs in the SEs that can only be fixed by limiting the framerate: -The mouse appears before the Part 1 title card so it never triggers and the interface is temporarily gone until you talk to someone in the SCUMM bar -MI2 has a bunch of areas where the game just hangs and not even a restart will fix it; you have to limit the framerate.
-
That would break me. There's still a part of me that won't believe this game is real until I'm playing it.
-
I found the Reddit thread this is from and Dom is actually just responding to the question posed by the OP which was "are you also going crazy from not hearing more news about the game" so all this means is he is just as desperate as us...impressive since he still knows more than we do 😂
-
At the very least, we know there's an inventory, or at least some way to use items with the environment, given Ron's tweet about the bug with using the lamp in the galley. I'm very curious about what changes (if any) will be made to the dialog system aswell. Of course, these questions could all be addressed with a simple gameplay preview... ...I'm losing my mind a little bit.

I don't care if the whole game is an extended Monkey Kombat sequence, I just wanna know more about the game, dammit!
