Tornados, Hail and Lightning, Oh My!

We just had a killer storm here. Lightning all over the place and hail ranging from softball to half golf ball size. We luckily got the smaller stuff at our house though. Here's two pictures I took of the storm front that was turning into a twister. It went right over us, it was awesome. :D

We had something like that on I think... Last Sunday. But here it was raining REALLY Heavily, I couldn't see out my window, and then there were tornado warnings. Oh, and don't forget the freaking insane lightning.

Lightning struck about 2 kilometers away and then there was some dull rumbling, then BOOM. holy crap, made my ears ring.

Man, i'm lucky where I am. I'm from Massachusetts and my state doesn't get much in the natural disasters department, aside from the occasional hurricane off of Cape Cod. We rarely get tornadoes and the last one to strike happened only a few years ago. It touched down somewhere in a small town in the Berkshire Hills. Didn't do much. Just danced around for a few minutes and fizzled out. Also, the area where I am has something that's pretty cool. We have a dead volcano, dating back from before pre-historic times, back when the earth was taking shape. I'd love to find out where the calderra is.

The most tornado prone areas aren't densely populated so even though many tornados touch down the average damage they cause is minimal (they strike grain fields, etc.). For example, where I grew up in Texas (Rotan, the absolute middle of nowhere just below the western edge of the panhandle) the tornados only chew up mesquite trees (cattle ranches) and cotton fields 99% of the time.

That said, there are some non-farmland areas near my home town that always get hit and people still live in them. There's a trailer park in Sweetwater, Texas that has been hit by 3 tornados in the past 8 years and people still move their trailer houses there.
