TiE23
I got STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl last night for $40. I played it a bit and got the AK, but felt kind of blahh the first night (I was regretting my purchase at one point). My frame rate was ****ty even at medium settings with the shadows tuned down. So today I saw that there was a patch and that it deletes your save. I updated anyway and I OC'd my 7900GS from 500mhz to 615mhz (yeah, that's a lot). It ran pretty darn smooth for all the detail that was on. I cranked up the Full Dynamic Lighting to get the awesome shadow effects (Lightning storms cause the coolest effects casting flashing shadows of trees, buildings, and grass). I only manage around 25-30fps but it's still okay, (before over clocking I could barely keep above 10fps). So with my new game I blazed through the first boring hour of the game in around 15 minutes and got right to the meat of it (well, as meaty as it gets staying within 1km of "home"). I raided the motor pool methodically and slowly, bullets grazing inches by me as I tried popping bandits with my pistol and switching to the double barreled shotgun on close kills. I collected an AK and some ammo and ambushed the last two bandits who were talking with each other around a camp fire in a building (I basically capped both of them). Then I moved to the military check point and had a heated fire-fight with the 3 soldiers covered in armor. I decided to go back home and sell my loot. Then the fun/crazy part... After selling all my booty (AK's, bags full of pistols, and soldiers rations) I decided to see where the loud speakers near by were coming from. I go down the road and take out my binoculars and see a small attachment of 3 men walking towards my town from their check-point. I hide in some bushes and ambush them. They didn't go down easy, they hid and it took at least a dozen AK shots to take them down, then another to finish them off while they were knocked down on the ground. I take some damage but I heal and loot their bodies and return home again. So then I go back towards the military check-point to see if there were any soldiers coming back. I bust out my binoculars and get a big shock. There was a group of about 10 soldiers coming right towards the Stalker's town (my "home" at the moment). I sprint back after promptly filling my pants, amazed at how the AI reacted so realistically... they were retaliating for my attack! I run back and get ready selling the rest of my loot and buying supplies from the trader and go back outside. I first hear shouting as all the Stalker rookies jump up and get into defensive positions... Well, it was pretty much total chaos, bullets flying from everywhere but it's not what you'd expect. The soldiers stayed in higher ground in the bushes, it made them harder to hit or even see. The Stalkers were all rookies and all had pistols, there were 3 guards with sawed-off shotguns that were little use. Besides me the only other Stalker to have a rifle was Wolf, the chief of the little village (population: 12). There were moments where I was getting shot from guy's I couldn't see. The soldiers even tried to flank us by going through a hole in the fence into a house's yard. There were some "Band of Brothers" moments where I could see one Stalker who stayed out in the open too long only to catch a stray bullet and fall like a wet sack of cement in the street. It took around 10 minutes to repel the soldiers with our small arms. The town lost 8 of 12 men, including Wolf the chief and my two friends who I saved early in the game. The village was attacked a second time during the night 5 minutes later, but it was only 4 soldiers (3 privates and a lieutenant that I had to duel myself). It was pretty freakin' crazy. The AI is pretty great in the way they fight you, taking cover and flanking you (it felt like I was playing real players with self-preserving attitudes) and shooting you when you were too slow to find cover. In the 3.5 hours I've played it so far, I'd give it a 95%. It has the graphics of Half-Life 2, the open-ended feeling and social AI of Oblivion, the inventory system somewhat like Deus Ex 2, and the fighting and fighting AI of Far Cry. Also, did I mention the shadows are freaking awesome? If you want to get it, have a good rig people. It runs like Oblivion, and if that sounds bad it's worse having a bad frame rate and having to shoot people with guns.
jon_hill987
What spec is the PC you were running it on? I would have thought a 7900GS would be quite good.
TiE23
What spec is the PC you were running it on? I would have thought a 7900GS would be quite good. No, it is, just you have to over-clock it first... Specs: eVGA 7900GS 256mb PCI-E Oc'd from 500MHz/1.36GHz to 615MHz/1.58GHz 1Gig of RAM (I'm getting another gig this week) AMD 64 3700+ San Diego (I'd like to get a better one) Without the OC it chugged like hell. It took me a bit to find the sweet spot, the highest it would go without getting artifacts. It would artifact at it's "optimal settings" of 621MHz/1.62GHz. For settings I have medium selected but with AA and full lighting on. It looks pretty good but I bet if I put the texture detail higher it'd look even better. I had a look at the required spec for this when I was in Virgin earlier, it is insane. it recommends a AMD 64X2 4200+ if I remember rightly and a 7900GT. PC game designers are going to have to make their games run on more mid range machines or they will loose out to the console market. I would expect my PC to run most things fairly well but it seems that that just isn't the case. I didn't buy it.

Looking at your specs in your signature it looks like all you need is a new video card. 7900GS 256mb isn't that bad and it's about $150-170 depending where you look and if it's on sale. swphreak
My lovely new computer came in. Spent last weekend getting it set up and configured. Totally splurged on the specs: Antec P180 case Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680i Coolermaster liquid cooling kit Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX6700 (4x 2.66GHz OC'd to 3.2Ghz) 2GB RAM GeForce 8800GTX One of them 150 Gig Raptor Harddrives XP Pro (screw Vista) I think I'm set for 5+ years (at least I plan to make it last that long). They say the Quad cores run freakin' hot, but with the liquid cooling, it stays down to a very acceptable level (besides, I'm told they're freakin' made to run hot). I had Folding@Home running in the background and played some Half-Life 2. The game was running perfectly fine with all the settings on High, and I noticed some shorter loading times. Popped in Supreme Commander, and that game rules. The guys at GPG actually coded in support for multiprocessors which is awesome. If anyone here has the game, we need to do some MP. I also installed X3: Reunion. I found it completely impossible to play on my old PC (3.4Ghz, 1GB Ram, Radeon 9700 Pro). I'm thinkin' it'll run perfectly this time. Anyone who has the game will know what I'm talking about. What's really awesome is that both Supreme Commander and X3 both had their copy protections removed in patches. There, I think my e-penis has been thoroughly enlarged. If anyone else has HL2DM or Supreme Commander, we need to do some multiplayer.

Yeah, I know, the other option is a second 7600GT, but to be honest I think am going to wait for Geforce eights to be cheap before upgrading, A bit more RAM wouldn't hurt my computer either. I'm happy playing HL2 for now, So I really don't need to rush into buying anything, there is no point if I am not going to use it as, lets face it, the prices come down very quickly. If it turns out I can't play HL2:E2 when it finally comes out I am upgrading strait away though, Alyx needs saving!

TiE23
I OC'd my CPU a little bit from 2.2ghz to 2.31ghz. It's my first time and I don't feel like frying my CPU for a few extra frames. Here are some Stalker pics. Check it out. Nothing more fun than finding a lone injured survivor after a battle and contemplating how to kill him. To those who don't own the game: Yeah, real time shadows on everything. Even lighting is detailed. Real time lights, your flashlight (and those of the enemy) will do the same effect. I once had a baddie on a catwalk above me and his light was so realistic looking.

BongoBob
I just got back from Extreme Thing 2007, a big ass outdoor concert and sports festival. Was f***ing great. The two main reasons I went were Unwritten Law and Static-X. Unwritten Law was great, and as soon as they played the opening notes to Up All Night, I was wildin out. Then there was a break, and I went to get something to eat, and I got in this big ass line of people for some cheesesteak. I'm waiting, and all of a sudden I hear a big as crash and look over, and this white dude was getting the s*** beat out of him by this big ass black dude. Turned out the white dude was spewing white supremecy bulls***, and the black dude flew into him. It was a good 4 minutes before anyone could break them up. Finally somone sprayed a small spray of mace, and it damn near took out everyone. Everyone was coughing their asses off. The good thing though is that damn near everyone got out of line to watch the fight, so I ended up getting to like 4 people away from the front. After that I found my friend Mike, and we went to wait for Static-X to come out. Then it turned into girls gone f***ing wild. I think about 21 chicks flashed everyone in the 10 minute wait for Static-X. Being a guy, it was basically the high point of the day Static-X finally comes out, and I was ready to jump into the pit with my friend Mike. Right before I jump in, this chick runs into me, and BOOM, hits me right in the balls. I was out for like 2 songs. Then after that I proceeded to beat the crap out of people and have the crap beat out of me. It was f***ing great. I think I actually watched them play for a total of 30 seconds in their whole hour long set. Then during their last song, the biggest circle pit I had seen opened up, and me and Mike got in it, and right at the end, I got elbow checked in the ribs, and this big ass dude basically stomped on my Big Toe. It added insult to injury. I ended up not watching the last band (didn't really care about them that much anyways). My ears are ringing, my head hurts, my feet ache, my ribs hurt like hell, and I couldn't be happier And in unrelated news, as of yesterday I'm no longer single. w00t
