A young holo? When everyone else in the scene looks like how old they were when they died? Eh.... No. As far as I can see, GL is just putting Hayden in because he can, not really because there's any good reason to do so. Besides, the old man looks a lot better in context. You don't get all nice and pretty just because you're dead. He's a weary old man that's happy because he's finally rid himself of his slavery to the darkside and has been redeemed, still bearing the scars of what he did in life.

Let's not discuss this in this thread though, that's been done. :)

mine's on order.... but the postman came when i was in the shower, so i have to pop to the post office at lunch time to get a package (which is hopefully SW, but may be a couple of cheap dvds i ordered a week or so ago.)

Boy i hope it is Star Wars....:D

it WAS star wars! Yay!

It is sat beside me on my desk, but now i have to wait to go home to watch it. sigh.

It made a lot more sense when you saw a kindly looking old man as luke's dad watching over him... as he would have been if the dark side hadn't consumed most of his body and turned him into a machine.

Surely this version will have luke doing a double take and then going "who the **** is that kid yoda?" :D

I agree. Luke never saw Anakin as a young'un, so how is he gonna know who the hell that ghost standing by Yoda and Obi-Wan is.

Not only would Luke not know who he was, but if you showed the movies to someone who had never seen them or the prequels, THEY wouldn't know who he was, and you'd have to explain it to them, and they'd be like...well that's stupid, how would I have known that if I wasn't with a Star Wars nerd.

You can spout off the 'he ceased to be anakin when he turned into Vader' jargon to me all day and I will never buy it, because the entire point is that he was once AGAIN Anakin Skywalker when he threw the Emperor down the long shaft and saved Lukes life. He was redeemed which is why he was able to fade away and become part of the force.

Actually, I had heard that he explains that he goes to his younger form because they appear as their "true self." Since the old Anakin is "more machine now, than man," that is not his true self, even though he has been redeemed. Thus the young Anakin...

Someone will have to confirm. :)

I must say that the packaging is remarkably unexciting. About as uninteresting as the Indiana Jones packaging (ie 3 plastic cases in a box) and made of a thinner cardboard that is gonna get damaged. No cool flipouts or leaflets or anything.... :(

interesting quote you all wish GL had read:

Aldous Huxley wrote this in regard to a later edition of Brave New World:

To pore over the literary shortcomings of twenty years ago, to attempt to patch a faulty work into perfection it missed at its first execution, to spend one's middle age in trying to mend the artistic sins committed and bequeathed by that different person who was oneself in youth - all this is surely vain and futile. And that is why this new Brave New World is the same as the old one. Its defects as a work of art are considerable; but in order to correct them I should have to rewrite the book - and in the process of rewriting, as an older, other person, I should probably get rid not only of some of the faults of the story, but also of such merits as it originally possessed. And so, resisting temptation to wallow in artistic remorse, I prefer to leave both well and ill alone and to think about something else.

My gut reaction is that I don't like the change of Anacin's ghost. I really didn't like the change in the first SE of Greedo shooting first at Han, or shooting at all. I thought that that scene was right the way it was. The comments that I read in the articles were that the shootings have been altered so that Greedo barely shoots first, this sort of fixes the alteration, but I prefer him not shooting at all. As for Anakin, if there is no explanation in RotS for this change then I will hate it. These problems are what GL should have thought of when he went to make a six part story and for some reason decided to start telling it in the middle. It's his own fault for doing it backwards.

I've just finished watching A New Hope and i thought i'd do a mini review (although i guess everyone else has already bought this).

Video

Almost without exception the video quality is exceptional... it all looks detailed and vibrant and not at all like a film that is nearly 30 years old. (9.5/10)

Audio

This was mostly excellent. The explosions and SFX all sounded great, and there was some ok use of the surrounds in places.

However, and this might be my setup, the dialogue sounded a bit off. I'm not sure what it was, but it sounded a bit more high pitched and tinny and less "warm" than i remember. Can't really describe it. Maybe it is just because it is clearer, who knows. I also found leia's voice to be more scrathy than i remembered.

It all made it seem slightly detached.

It might just be my setup though. (7/10)

Menus

Nice animations, varied menus, but nothing all that special. Much like the Indy menus.(8/10)

Packaging

I thought this was a little disappointing. Minimal, a lot like the Indy packaging... but a much thinner cardboard that is gonna damage easily. Nothing cool like the alien quadrilogy or the buffy box sets. (6/10)

Changes

Ok this is probably the most controversial section so ill try and break it down into sections.

Clearing up SFX:

Ships - They have done a great job on clearing up the sfx for things like tiefighters, although i did think i saw a second of a box around one in the death star escape.

Laser Blasts - They have made them smaller, less fuzzy and more like the prequels. Personally i liked the fuzzy ones better, but i'm not that bothered.

Lightsabers - Oddly, they don't seem to have improved these at all.. it is still mainly a flickery whitte shaft. They havent smoothed over the slight jumps when it starts/stops either.

New SFX/Scenes:

Explosions - They have the 96 special edition explosions. Look fine.

Troopers in desert - these look ok. Might be slightly changed from 96, not sure.

Mos Eisley - The new mos eisley looks really FAKE. The shots of the wamprats and the obviously CGI speeder and dodgyly matted together layers of people and dinosaurs look SO FAKE, i really thought they would have improved this. Some of the real actors they have matted in look ok though.

Greedo - This still looks stupid. Han still dodges left in a fake and robotic way, greedo still misses by a mile. They might have made it more simultaneous as they say (i don't have the special edition videos to check) but to my memory it is just the same as the 96 editions nad just as bad.

Jabba - Apparently he isn't the same version as in the 96 editions, i can't say i noticed a lot of difference. He still looked like fake CGI, but maybe a bit greener. Han still walks over his tail and it still look terrible - as if they cut him out and moved him over in some cheap desktop animation software. (I still think this scene is pointless as it repeats the dialogue from the previous scene, but what the hell).

Death Star Battle - I'd forgotten how much CGI they had inserted into this in the special editions (i remembered it being only a few quick cuts). I think the 3D x-wing models we were so impressed with in 96 are starting to show their age... they don't seem lit quite right and stand out a bit too much from the model shots (making both look worse than if eiter was used alone). The CGI shots of the falcon lifting off from ME looked fake to me too.

(4/10)

Summary

I have to admit i was dead excited about this when i got it home, but a little disappointed while watching it. The dialogue seemed flatter than i remembered in places, the new scenes were more jarring than i remembered and it was all a little more clinical than i remembered. The end trench run with the ever rising tempo still got my heart racing as always though.

Total: 8/10 - but i would probably be happier with the original versions.

Not sure if i'll get around to ESB tomorrow as i might go to the cinema, but i expect i will like it and ROTJ better as there will be less messing (not countin the last 5 minutes of ROTJ of course).

God I want them so bad...

But we don't have the money for them now :(

Hell, I have to do garden work around my neighborhood just so that I can preorder Halo 2 SE : | Not to mention the countless other things I need, IE, curtains, a new bedding set, Star Wars Battlefront, Burnout 3, ESPN NFL Football 2k5, etc, etc.

I'm a busy little bee right now : |

@Prime and IS: Technically, he started being Anakin again at the end of RotJ, so his true self would still be old guy Anakin, cuz he was, afterall, Anakin.

Personally, I think if they're gonna change ole Anakin with young I'm-Hated-As-Much-As-Jar-Jar-And-Greedo-Shooting-First Anakin, they mine as well change ole Obi-Wan with Qui-Gon-Used-To-Touch-Me-In-Certain-Places Obi-Wan...

...as for Yoda...eh, I don't think theres much to change...cept maybe having a lightsaber in his hand...but that'd be stupid.

after being drunken atching a new hope my sober response to it that it was very well redone with brightning all the colors making the costumes have more life... However some scenes just felt out of place in the movie i guess thats just due to the 1 million times ive seen the film without the special features.. like these 2 scenes:

the sandtroopers and the lizards did not match the ones that were in the original scene right after that especially the lizards they made them too muscular and too definedand making solo dodge greedos shot his head looks flat compared to the scene right after that.

i do love how they made the lightsabers flat bladed like actual swords that is a great new twist along with their enhanced colorings sounds and collisions.
