I don't know how many of you were around when it came out ... but Spaceballs arrived with quite a whimper ... Star Wars was out of the public eye, and many took it as another sign of Mel Brooks irrelevence ...

I thought it was OK, probably 2.5 out of 4 stars.

So a sequel - timely, if it actually comes out withing 5 years of Ep III

On the one hand Mel Brooks has really lost it recently, hasn't done anything new or original in ages... on the other hand SPACEBALLS ROCKED, and it would be nice to have someone dress lucas down a bit for his terrible decisions on the prequels and the special editions..

Its just a shame it didn't come out after Ep1, as it might have shamed lucas into doing the next 2 properly...:D

SPACEBALLS ROCKED

For whatever reason I fail to share the enthusiasm of some here on this movie. The movie came out in '87, and I saw it right away, and the response from my whole crew home from various colleges around the country was a defeaning 'meh'. I saw it on cable a billion times for a while there, but hadn't seen it again until I rented it with my kids a few months ago. My older son in particular thought it was hilarious, and I found that removing the need for the satire to be timely or relevent has actually benefitted the movie. I still think of it as mediocre, not a DVD worth paying more than $10 for, but funnier than I remember.

Eh?!? Who *isn't* giving Lucas truckloads of crap, micro-analyzing and pre-critizing his every decision and choice - many have gone so far as to re-review the OT and bash *them* and him as just dumb luck ...

I've always loved Mel Brooks, but really just his 70's stuff. By the time 'History of the World' rolled around, he was pretty much done. 'To Be or Not To Be' was good, but since then it was Spaceballs (mediocre), Robin Hood Men In Tights (bad) and Dracula Dead and Loving It (a true 'horror' of a movie ;) ).

Spaceballs was his last decent film, and that was 17 years ago. Why should I anticipate a new one?

Also - looking at boxofficemojo at what else was playing when SpaceBalls opened, and what was good from that list:

- Rozanne - very good flick. Don't know how it translates these days.

- Full Metal Jacket - got overshadowed by Platoon, but I think FMJ was better. OK Pyle ... I'm gonna rip off your head and ...

- Secret of My Success - I loved that movie.

- The Untouchables - Deniro with a baseball bat ... man that gave me chills ...

And there were so many cool movies that year ... oh, nostalgia ...

Mike, you're losing the audience. The average age here is 15-17ish. Gotta remember that :p

It's not the best flim in the world, but it has good humor. It's making fun of a lot of different stuff, and I find the thought of Rick Moranis as a "Dark Lord of the Sith" to be particularly funny.

I thought Robin Hood Men In Tights was amusing, but I wouldn't buy it (I don't have to either, Comedy Central played it like every 2 weeks...).

True, that is what i feel too. But i felt spaceballs was a pretty decent film (althoguh not quite up to blazing saddles). I thought the opening take-off with the endless flyby was great, and all the stuff with Rick Moranis on his ship was priceless. I still can't watch the poor jawas without "hi ho, ho ho, it's off to work we go" going through my head these days.

The stuff with lone star and john candy wasn't as great (though still mildly humerous) and the one thing i almost never like in Mel Brooks films is Mel Brooks, who always plays the same character and always uses lots of jokes that i assume are jewish references that go straight over my head.

Haven't bought it on DVD, but i did think about it at one point.

--------------

Kids moaning on websites is one thing, but an actual film going to a wider audience might have actually reached Lucas, though it would probably have just made him dig his heels in further.

I'm with Mike on this one. :indif: I was into SW when it came out, but I found it more meh than amusing and/or insulting.

Spaceballs was alright, but taking the piss out of Star Wars is kind of old now (it was then). They're going to have to inject some serious uumph to make it workable.

To be fair I only bought this on VHS 2 years ago (couldn't even be arsed to splash out the cost of a DVD) and even then it's still... average...

Maybe I'm too touchy when it comes to SW Spoofs... maybe we need more things like Troops.

:)B.

here's an interesting fact about spaceballs... apparently in the director’s commentary of the Spaceballs DVD, Mel Brooks said he showed a rough cut of spaceballs to George Lucas. who, he said, absolutely loved it and offered some advice about SFX.
