Expansion Packs.

- Mysteries of the Sith for Jedi Knight

- Hordes of the Underdark for Neverwinter Nights

...

- United Offensive for Call of Duty

The first two are epics, the last is just lots of fun and almost as long as the (very short) original.

Hmm since MotS had engine modifications and could run independently without accessing ANY JK1 resources barring one simple copy protection file that was easily circumvented, I don't think it qualifies as an "expansion" pack. Good game though.

Best expansion packs... Hmm.

Scourge of Armagon for Q1 has some of the best level design and old school enemies in ANY game EVER...

Tales of the Sword Coast made Baldur's Gate even more engrossing with its dank dungeons, psycho-dramas and lest we forget, demons.

Throne of Bhaal was perhaps better atmospherically than Baldur's Gate 2 ever was...

That's the short list and all I can think of right now.

Nevertheless, it is still an expansion pack. ; )

And it gets my vote.

I've thought of another one, Yuri's Revenge for RA2. Rather nice that. Also, Zerstorer for Q1 deserves at least an honourable mention despite being an unofficial TC, due to its influential status in the modding and mapping communities. Likewise "They Hunger" for HL.

Very detailed argument there, but wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE MotS, especially the Sith temple levels. But LEC could have called it a hamburger. That wouldn't make it a hamburger though, would it.

And since it doesn't "expand" on the original game resources nor use the original game engine, it's quite simply NOT an expansion to JK1. it's a small standalone game. Additionally I think it's insulting to the individuality of MotS to call it an expansion when it was worked on by a completely different dev-team to the original with different goals in terms of atmosphere and EU content.

Very true and well said. It is just funny that is it marketed and remembered as an expansion - which has only muddied the waters in other arguments (particularly JA).

Also - anyone play Wages of SiN? I just got SiN Gold for the Mac, which has both the original SiN and the expansion.

i thought MOTS used an enhanced version of the jedi knight engine, not a different one. i could be wrong but i'm sure i read that somewhere.

and as for it having different developers, so did COD: United Offensive.

i guess it treads a fine line, but i would still call it an expansion pack.

Absolutely the engine MotS used was enhanced using the original JK engine as a base, but JO used an enhanced Q3 engine as a base. JO wasn't an "expansion pack" for Quake 3 just because its devteam used id's engine as a starting point. The two games run completely independantly of each other.

There's a simple rule of thumb to tell whether something's an "expansion pack" or not. Does it expand the content of the original game, in other words, do you double click on "originalgame.exe" to use the new, expanded content?

But this debate has occurred before in the JO and JA forums, I'll try to find a link.

I like Bloodmoon too, but Tribunal is my favorite. I appreciate how much they enhanced and fixed the original version of Morrowind when they made these expansions.

StarCraft: Brood War

the worst expansions, I must say, are the countless Sim additions. Hooray I get 2 new items and 3 new sets of clothing and my sims can have magic wands!:p
