Arreat
Anyone heard of the recent "war" between eBaums and YTMND? I've been hearing that they both had spam wars against each other with allies helping them out... Some world we live in huh? Apparently eBaums stole some content off YTMND w.o permission which set off this whole thing. EDIT: found a link to describe everything World Wide Web War Taken from YTMND wikipedia Rivalries [edit] eBaum's World From January 7, 2006 to January 8, 2006, users from ytmnd.com joined users from 4chan, KNova, Newgrounds, LUElinks, LUE and other internet communities to invade the eBaum's World forums. This DDoS attack was provoked by Eric Bauman, the owner of eBaum's World, hosting an image created by a ytmnd.com user on his site without crediting the original author. He had also altered the image, a GIF file compiled of Lindsay Lohan photographs, and placed an eBaum's World watermark on it. "The Raid", or "YTMND-Day", as it is referred to by ytmnd.com users, was planned to begin at 12:00 AM Eastern standard time on January 8th. However, many individuals began the attack shortly after 11:00 PM, causing the eBaum's World forums to experience database errors and a complete crash by 12:00 AM. The eBaum's World forum was soon restored by its tech support team. Later that morning, a ytmnd.com user hacked the eBaum's World forum database, causing all users of the forum to be redirected to ytmnd.com. After fixing this hack, the moderators from eBaum's World instituted policy stating that anyone using their forums for the purpose of promoting ytmnd.com would be banned. Max Goldberg condemned the attack on January 8th: I tried to stop this all when it was a snowball, but it just turned into an avalanche. I'd like to make an open statement to the community, in regards to DDoS. Don't do it. It sets a whole new precedent and will not end well, it affects a lot more than just ebaums world and really crosses the line.[3] He also called the attack a "vulgar display of power." Goldberg did note that despite the circumstances, he was amazed to see that many internet communities working together.[4] Goldberg stated that any YTMND author whose site promoted DDoS attacks would have their account deleted [5]. He elaborated by saying that the recent conflict had placed both himself and his hosting company in a negative light, and that ytmnd.com could not endure the financial burden any legal challenges would bring because of it. Although many individuals said they were working in the "name of YTMND", Goldberg did not promote or endorse their actions.[6] A statement was posted on eBaum's World January 10th alleging that the DDoS attacks were a form of cyber-terrorism[7]. Neil Bauman, Vice President of eBaum's World and father of Eric Bauman, sent an e-mail message to Max Goldberg that same day. Bauman blamed Goldberg for harassment endured by his employees at the hands of both Internet users and individuals who vandalized their corporate headquarters in Rochester, NY. He also made inflammatory remarks about the users of ytmnd.com, prompting his comments to be parodied in YTMNDs. Goldberg replied and asked Bauman to remove the Lindsay Lohan GIF from his site in return for Goldberg removing any reference to "eBaum" from ytmnd.com.[8] The page displaying the image was removed from eBaum's World sometime between 12:00 AM and 12:21 AM PST on January 11, 2006 — however, the image remained on their server for a brief while after the page was removed, but with a modified file name. It revealed a message, "Lohan-facial-fuc-u-guyz-187", which can be interpreted as "**** you guys 187" [9]. Max Goldberg then added a disclaimer to ytmnd.com stating that any user continuing to make sites referencing eBaum's World would have their account deleted.[10] Neil Bauman appeared on the WCMF (Rochester, NY) program "Radio Free Wease" on the morning of January 11, 2006 to explain his company's stance regarding the January 7th and January 8th attacks. He maintained that all content on eBaum's World could not be legally challenged as it was submitted with consent from what he "presumes" was the original author of each work. Bauman stated that his company was in contact with local authorities and arrests were being made in relation to the attacks.[11] Max Goldberg performed maintenance on ytmnd.com from roughly 11:00 PM on January 11, 2006 to 12:30 AM on January 12th. In accordance with the agreement he had reached with Neil Bauman, Goldberg removed all references to the phrase "eBaum" from his site.[12] Despite the resolution, ytmnd.com experienced DDoS attacks on the morning of January 12th.[13] Something Awful made light of the conflict in a January 13th article on their website.[14] The popular humor/news site Fark.com also removed ebaumsworld from its list of site friends shortly after the incident. [edit] RealFunnyVideos During the eBaum's World incident, it was discovered on January 10, 2006 that RealFunnyVideos.com had been stealing content from ytmnd.com users. Specifically, they were found to be streaming two YTMND sites as video files. Both videos were submitted by a user called "the boss" on January 2nd and January 3rd: * If Paris Only Had A Brain, Starring Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and Tinkerbell * Lindsay Lohan Doesn't Change Facial Expressions Many ytmnd.com patrons used the comments section of RealFunnyVideos to call for removal of the files, but failed to receive correspondence from the site owner. On the morning of January 12th, RealFunnyVideos.com crashed after its bandwidth limit was exceeded. It has not yet been restored. That same morning, Quacked Entertainment was found to be mirroring the Lindsay Lohan video from RealFunnyVideos. The video was removed later in the day following complaints from ytmnd.com users. Taken from Ebaum's World Wikipedia YTMND YTMND is one of the most recent targets of eBaum's World for content theft. The image content of the page "Lindsay Lohan Doesn't Change Facial Expressions" [3], which has since been edited in response to the theft, was hosted and displayed by eBaum's World without the consent of the site creator and edited to display the site's watermark. A large number of YTMND users were infuriated by the theft, creating anti-eBaum's World YTMND sites and organizing a raid on eBaum's World regardless of YTMND's lack of a static forum. As of January 7, 2006 YTMND users have persuaded others from Newgrounds, 4chan, adult swim, KNova, Fark, D-Day, GameFAQs (mainly the notorious private community LUE and its independent sister community LUElinks), to help with the raid, although no direct link can be made from the other web communities to the attack as of yet. Other web communities have been rumored to be in the raid; these include Genmay, Interflop, MySpace, Gamespy, IGN, and Gaia Online. The attackers made use of a variety of electronic methods, including spamming, pinging, and distributed denial of service attacks, as well as physical means of protest such as prank calls and vandalism of the eBaum's World headquarters. Two LUElinks forum members who lived near the headquarters looked up the address in the phone book, and documented their visit to the headquarters with several photos. They taped two signs to the door, taking a picture, but removing the signs immediately after taking the picture, leaving no physical harm to the building at all (photos were hosted on a YTMND page but it was soon removed). The eBaum's World forums have repeatedly shut down over the course of the attack and its chatbox has been backlogged, but in response to the early forum spamming, Bauman has since modified the forum's registration process to prevent mischief. Still, the eBaum's World forum moderators have made it clear that they will continue to ban spammers and other troublemakers. This was such a problem, even Fark removed eBaums from their Friends list. These events are the opening salvos in what is referred to by many people as World Wide Web War I. On January 10, 2006 Eric posted a message on his web site [4] claiming he was the victim of cyberterrorism. Furthermore, Bauman has claimed he has the full rights to the animation in question: Q. Did ebaumsworld.com steal this animation? A. Absolutely not. We received this animation as a contest submission by someone claiming to be the original author. We have a digitally signed and dated consent and release form that was filled out by the author in question. In fact, it is our policy for ALL content we receive to be accompanied by this consent and release form before we feature it on the site. We also log contact information, the originating IP address and any information given to us about the original creator of any content, including any other proof of origin the author can provide. Beyond all of this, our editorial staff manually researches the origin of the content looking for references to or appearances of the same content on other websites. Any discrepancies are researched fully before a decision to post the material is made. He also claims to respect copyright laws and honors requests to remove content. Ironically, eBaum's World has a webpage [5] dedicated to the copyright infringement and cease and desist letters that they themselves have ignored in the past. In addition, Weebl (of Badger Badger Badger fame) has claimed otherwise. [6] It should also be noted that hotlinking directly to a game with a copyright note on the bottom of it strongly contradicts that claim (see here). A copyright notice was later put on the original Lindsay Lohan animation ("© 2005 Derek Lutz" [7]). On January 11, by the original creator's request, eBaum's World removed the image from the page — however, for a while the image still existed on the server, with a modified file name: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/images2/lohanfacialfucuguyz187.gif (link is dead). Note the file name has a message, Lohan-facial-fuc-u-guyz-187, meaning "**** you guys, 187". The number "187" is the numeric code for "murder" used by law enforcement, which may be interpreted as a death threat from eBaum's World itself. Two cease and desist emails [8] were sent to YTMND's webmaster, Max, on the 10th from Neil Bauman (Eric's father) concerning the actions of YTMND's users. Both letters threatened police involvement and litigation, were filled with ad hominem attacks (Bauman likened YTMND users to "pathetic, pimply-faced maladjusted pre-teens whose parents don't love them ... [whose] best Saturday night date takes AA batteries ... Obviously you have lost possession of your Yiddish cup ... Please feel free to post this if you have the gonads."). As of late January 11, 2006 Eric Bauman agreed to remove the image, after the original author sent a cease-and-desist letter via certified mail [9] claiming he had, in fact, violated U.S. Copyright Law. 90SK
Coordinated attacks against websites? Huh. That's actually pretty scary. You’d have to have a great deal of zealous people attending your forums in order to have mass corroboration with something like that. Or a bunch of crazies. Either way. And all over some crummy Lindsey Lohan image. Whatever.

topshot
Forums fighting against other forums just for the sake of something so meaningless is like myself attacking my own brother's opinions without one to back me up. It's pointless and proves nothing else (other than me being stupid and looking like a fool ).

Sabretooth
Sheesh. You cronies forget that the Yoda's Swamp itself was involved in a massive battle against a certain "eVula's The Swamp" forum. It was large, it was bloody and in the end, we were the victors. I led the battle, followed by Astro, Pie, Siv (I think...) and others who felt the call of their Forum... Eventually we won. The forum was deleted. NEways, this one's pretty funny.

Dagobahn Eagle
Gawd... Guys... There are real wars in the world. That kill real people. Most people don't know anything about the Rwanda genocide, the civil war being fought right now in Nepal (it's been going on for 10 years, commies vs. royalty), the extent of global slave trade, or the horrific treatment of animals by global meat industries, but they take their time to research and write three-page articles when a group of geeks attack a Web site. Pardon me for being too serious or whatever, but this made me sick. I hate EBaum's World, too (isn't it the site that's run by a little kid who ripped it from another site, every line of HTML, even the Staff page? - or was it EBaum's world that got ripped off?), but come on... "World War I"?.

LightNinja
i find this weird, its true that if the owner of eBaums is getting rich just for hosting other peoples work thats not just, but i dont see what a war would do, the solution to this should be to stop sending eBaums your work and ask for the images you've made to be removed. Btw Dagobahn Eagle is right but i dont think we can do much from here. Anyway i have a stupid question around my head.. how they attack the forums, they just post thousands of times all together?
