Damn you, PS3...

Damn, I don't like the controller that much, the grip "knobs" are too small/short for me.

Ehh, oh well. I'll be getting a job soon and all my cash will be going into getting a new console. I wanna see what MGS5 looks like at launch.

Yeah, they did a half-assed job of ripping nintendo off because they only had a year to do it. Way to go sony. :indif:

Basically they lost a customer for me. Not because of the controller thing, but because of the price. It's $600, that's too much.

I'm stopping myself from saying anything about this issue because If I start I will go on one HUGE rant that will make me sound like one big fanboy. And I know how you guys hate Nintendo fanboys.

I may make a comment after the Nintendo conference...

rofl .. well i'll have a rant then

something as innovative as nintendo's motion sensor device was bound to be followed by its competitors, but so soon? You think Sony would wait to see if was a success on Nintendo, i means its not like Sony and Microsoft generally do anything risky when it comes to their business plans. Neways just from this information there are some consequences:

  1. One of the kewl and stand-out things about the Wii would be its motion sensor technology, and ppl .. even xbox and ps gamers would be drawn to it. This, (assuming it was a success) would lead to Nintendo having a competitive advantage. Of course later the other two would have to follow suit and Nintendo would lose this advantage, but there would be a time period where ppl would choose the Wii over the others because of this. With Sony "stealing" (though they are perfectly entitled to) this motion sensor idea, its no longer unique to the Wii. Sure the Wiiremote should be way better, i mean Sony had like 1 year to make the equivalent but it does include "X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw, and lateral motion detection". This means Wii would lose sales. Infact i read this comment under that link
Amazing. I get "Wii" functinality...but I don't have to feel like a moron every time I talk about it. God bless you Sony!
ppl (and there are a lot of them) like this would have no hesitation now in gettin a ps3 over a wii. Also some of the more unbiased buyers would be leaning towards the ps3 because of this.
  2. Now the 360 is the only nextgen console without a motion sensor input for their controller. Thus the system would be outdated once the other consoles come out and it would force them to add that functionality atleast within the next year or so.
  3. This is one of the good points though. If developers are making games for the ps3 that includes motion sensor input than they are so much more likely to make the effort to port to Wii. Additionally developers have more of an incentive to make Wii games, because they can port (though they would have to dial down the actual gameplay) to ps3 and boost sales.

This probably means that Sony are trying to take a shot at Nintendo, trying to prevent some of the more faithful from turnin so to speak. Taking this all into consideration, Wii sales will be lower than if Ps3 didnt have this in their new controller. However for ppl who are going to buy the Wii anyway, its very good because the number of 3rd party cross-platform games are definitely gonna increase and we wont be stuck with another gamecube in terms of variety.

Supposedly its ridiculous to control, from the liveblog that given on another joystiq page link but i havent had a chance to look at that yet. Anyway read some of the comments below there.

Actually the PS3 controller is closer to the Logitech motion sensing controller than it is to the Wiimote/Revmote.

The PS3 controller only does about as much as what the Analog attachment can doby itself, detect which way the controller is travelling and how fast it's going and that's it. the Wiimote/Revmote on the other hand can do what the PS3 controller can do but better and with a lot more control and stability. We already know that the DualShock 3 has no force feedback system, this IS NOT because it interferes with the sensors, it's cause of the Sony VS Immersion lawsuit which Sony lost and now they don't have any rumble tech. Second is the fact that the Revmote is can sense depth, how far you are away from the TV screen/sensor bar as well as being able to accurately plot your TV screen giving you pinpoint accuracy that of the lightgun. Again this is thanks to the sensor bar. And then there's the fact that the Wiimote/Revmote is one handed, a very clear advantage because you can handle it in more ways than the PS3 controller which you obviously have to hold with both hands.

What Sony has come up with is a half-assed attempt to take a stab at Nintendo.

Yeah... that is pretty pathetic..

Its basically just an attempt to con a few people into thinking that they have the cool new motion sensing technology that nintendo has - when infact its basic tilt stuff that has been around for years.

Also the dulashock doesn't match the (ugly) PS3 stylistically.. it looks wrong.

I know a lot of people like the dualshock... but it does have some major flaws.. they should smooth it out a bit, and swap the analoge and d-pads on the left to something like xbox/gamecube format as that works a lot better.

I'm surprised they haven't analoge triggers either, as those are very handy in a lot of games.

A year or so ago the PS3 was looking like the hands down winner for the next generation... but with each subsequent (anticlimactic) announcement it is looking worse and worse. Right now i'd take any of the next gen consoles over the PS3.. heck i'd rather have a DS or even a PSP.

From an ign comparison:

Is this technology the same?

No. In fact, the best way to imagine it is to relate the Sony PS3 controller to the left-hand Wii controller; dubbed nunchuck. In short, you would not be able to play a game like Metroid Prime in the same way using the PS3 controller.

What is the difference for developers?

Simply put, it's tilt vs. motion sensing. Monkey Ball for Wii and PS3 would essentially be the same, since it's only using the tilt ability of the controller. On the other hand, a 3D tennis game or sword fighting game with swing control elements is impossible for the PS3 hardware, as it requires full motion sensing technology.

Why doesn't it need a sensor bar?

Since the technology is based solely off the tilt ability, it is self-contained. Keep in mind that the sensor bar is used for the point and click ability of the Wii functions. It doesn't need the bar, since it doesn't use that technology. The same applies to the Wii nunchuck. It can function without a sensor bar.

What type of gameplay styles will work on the PS3 controller?

Here are a few examples: Kirby's Tilt 'n Tumble (which featured tilt control on the Game Boy Color), Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, racing games (using the tilt to rotate), flight sims, Monkey Ball, fishing (flick the tilt controller).

What type of things won't work on the PS3 controller?

The following actions can't be done on the PS3 controller with the same precision: Throwing/Catching a ball at a specific spot shown on screen, swinging a sword in 3D space and performing stabbing motions, aiming a weapon light-gun-style, swinging a racket, punching, general 3D item interaction, 3D drum simulator, swatting an "on-screen" fly, performing two separate tilt/motion functions at the same time.

In short, Nintendo fans still have a ton to look forward to. Will Wii have what it takes to give the world a true gaming revolution? We'll see you tomorrow morning at Nintendo's E3 conference.

Success of the Wii's motion sensing does not directly imply that Xboxes will soon be implementing some version of it. There are plenty of people who LIKE classic gaming. In fact, anyone who currently plays video games likes it. Just because something new is also fun doesn't mean it's time to abandon the old model.

Sony copied the idea because they're lame, and without some extra gimmicks nobody wants to pay $600 for one. And the fact that they're offering a crippled version for $500 is also really funny, since I recall a lot of PS fanboys mocking the 360 core version at it's release.

It seems that Sony has completely given up on trying to attract new people to the market, and they're relying solely on fanboys and overly rich people to fuel their system. Boo on them.

While this is true too, they might have also done it to put pressure on M$ for having the only traditional controller now.

I'm still not liking the moves by sony. They haven't told us anything we didn't know already besides changing the controller and the motion sensors, which probably just pissed people off more than anything else.

thank god, just when i thought they were going to stick with the "boomerang" controller. i hated the PS3 controller looked horrible. glad they went Dualshock 3

damn, November 17. 10 days after my b-day >:( ,o well, im saving up, got $195 for the PS3 and growing :). whats the Wii thing they stole for the controller? the motion detectors or something?

oh, and Sony didn't steal the six-axis idea from Nintendo, they stole it from MIcrosoft and Logitech. more here: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/sony-steals-motion-idea-but-not-from-nintendo/

You can't make much use of the PS3 controllers motion sensing abilities, the games it would most benefit are racers and super monkey ball... other than that it's a standard controller.

To add to that, developers didn't actually know about this till now, the Warhawk demo was put together not long before E3 and is the only game to support it at the moment. Sony isn't putting as much emphasis on the abilities as Nintendo is. It's not standard, it doesn't have to be used and most games probably won't use it, or will use it for very small things much like the digital click for the GCN controller.

Why can't you believe it now? They've done this kinda crap before.

Well, I just can't believe they'd just blatently do it. Just so open and obvious.

...much like the digital click for the GCN controller.

What?

Pff. Give me rumble ability over this crap of PS3 anyday. The Wii is one thing with all the stuff you can do with it, but the PS3's ability will be appealing for about 3 games before people get sick of it.

I hope this insane price doesn't stop M$ from doing a price drop. I still want the premium console for $300 or less. I am tempted to get a Wii too, but something tells me that its starting price will be jacked up since it doesn't need to be $250 to be the cheapest....
