Smells like teen nostalgia

Recommended Posts

I just found out, today, that i will propably go studying last two years of school in USA or Canada and it does not feel as great, as i thought it would. Of course i am happy, that i will get a real good education and will have all ways of my life wide open (compared to where i live now) but on other hand- i will miss my friends SO bad and my little sister nearly made me cry when she said "no, dont go, i wanna go with you." well, i know, making this kind of thread is weird, especialy, if i still have more than a year left untill i will have to go, but knowing, how fast this year passed it suddenly doesn't fell so long time away at all. Maybe i will get to know some of you in real life (Hey, who knows, world is a small place nowdays). Well i still hope i will have good time and that i will get my education as good as possible there and i intend to finish any unfinished matters here in Latvia before going. (well, if you wanna lock this, do so, but making this thread made me feel better)

I see no reason to lock this thread :)

I'd suggest that since you do have the time right now, spend as much of it as you can with Family & Friends... consider yourself lucky that you realized this way in advance rather than being a continent away ;)

Trust me, time flies faster as you go along, enjoy the ride, enjoy your loved ones.. and in between all that enjoying, you might want to do a 'little' schoolwork.. hehehe

If it's not too prying, could I ask which school(s) you are thinking of attending in Canada or the US?

Maybe this experience will prove to be very positive. Not only will you be getting a good education and opportunity, but before you leave you may learn more about what really matters in life. You may get to know your family better because you'll know that you won't be seeing them for awhile. Hopefully you'll have fun. :)

No! Come to the Midwest. We have corn! :)

This will work out to be nothing but fantastic for you. A great education, great memories and new friends. I know you'll miss your family and they'll miss you but that is only a temporary dilemma. You will be seeing them again. :) It sounds like your little sis may have a harder time with this though, perhaps try and spend more time with her while you're still there. Let her know that you'll miss her greatly and that you love her. Oh, and promise to take pictures, write her often and that you'll send her some awesome American candy. That never hurts either. ;)

why go to Canada?? they've got higher taxes and things in general just plain out cost more.

Eh, not really. Gas prices are higher and several other things are too, but in most cases, I'd say it costs roughly the same thing. Oh, and here, you can eat all sorts of exotic fruits unavailable in America because apparently, they'll destroy the country if they get in >_> Seriously, they strip you naked and do a thorough search...crazy US customs...

then again, if you come to the US, you run the risk of being run out of town if you don't fit the ethnic profile.

He's from Latvia, ex-soviet republic. He might be a communist. The simple possibility will make him be run out of town.

But here in Canada, we accept your communist opinion!

that's because you're only half-way there, what with the universal healthcare and all. XD
Since when?
hmm, i take it you don't live in a "Republican" State. :xp:

ohh, lighten up. its called sarcasm for a reason. ;)

I hope coming over here works out well for you:)

"You will be seeing them again."

You never know, better safe than sorry. Hang out with them as much as possible (family members are clingy and really dig that stuff, "JOHNNNNNNNN!!! COME EAT AT THE TABLE!!!) *ahem* anyway

You might consider leaving them something sentimental, especially your little sister.

Are coming over to finish high school or college?

Area of study?

Just remember when your off partying in crazy foreign lands that you're there (or here if you don't pick canada:xp: ) for a reason. Work and study hard, it'll be a whole lot easier on your family if they know your life's turning into a success story:)

I mean, u can make new friends and live ok in other countries, but (at least from my experience....) it just dosent feel the same. But thats a temporary thing and u'll go back to Latvia eventually, so lighten up...

Well, if you decide to come to the U.S.A. I think your experience here will depend on what area you live in. Urban areas are much different than rural areas and suburbs. In addition there are regional differences. For instance if you go to school in the south central or southeastern parts of the United States you just may pick up what we call a "southern drawl." :D

Sounds like the experience may be bittersweet for you since you're close to your family. I hope that you can look at this forthcoming opportunity more as an adventure than being away from your loved ones.

In all honesty though I didn't think the U.S. K-12 public education system was all that wonderful. It gets bashed a lot by the U.S. media so I'm kind of surprised that people from other countries would send their children here for a "great" education. :indif:

Come to Florida! Its great Beaches, Shopping, annoying Tourist in the stuipid Hawaiian print Shirts you can poke fun of (To all people who where tack Hawaiian print shirts in Florida. Its Florida, not Hawaii. They are on Opposite sides of the Continets. Get Florida print Shirts. Ya know the ones with the organges!!!) , oranges, key west, illegal immigrants. I can list all day.

In response to that I'd like to say We Southerners think that Northerners have a "Northern Drawl"

Your education system might be lacking sometimes, but it's still better then a lot of places. Way better.
