Quotes About the Force

I'd like to make this thread an archive of quotes about the Force,

including those from George Lucas himself, if you can find any.

What is the Force, and what does it do? What is its nature?

What make up the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force?

I'd like to say, "May the Force be with you!" as you search. :)

That's a very interesting topic, indeed. Well this is mine.

Force is an unknown matter, but it's known within us. We're all binded to it. It is essence of all living, but it looks like a living by itself. It has a Light and Dark Side, just like Duct tape. Now this is getting interesting: The Force was balanced by constant conflict of Light side and Dark Side. Otherwise, there would be no Force.

Obi-Wan: The Force will be with you, always.

Obi-Wan, again: The Force can have a strong influence on the weak minded.

^^^ I want to know how to use the Force. I know plenty of weak-minded people who i could manipulate!

Darth Vader: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed; the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

^^^ How true!

Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff. But I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There's no mystical energy field that controls MY destiny.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion,

Through passion, I gain strength,

Through strength, I gain victory,

Through victory, my chains are broken.

The Force shall free me.

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

There is no death, there is the Force.

;)

Here are some various quotes about various aspects of the Force...

"Which brings us up to the films 4, 5, and 6, in which Anakin's offspring redeem him and allow him to fulfill the prophecy where he brings Balance to the Force by doing away with the Sith and getting rid of evil in the universe..." -Lucas

"But if it was force-generated, it could be Force repelled. Luke raised his arms to deflect the bolts. Initially, he was successful- the lightning rebounded from his touch, harmlessly into the walls. Soon, though, the shocks came with such speed and power, they course over and into him. -ROTJ novelization"

"But this was no simple warrior enemy. Dooku's hand shot out toward the charging Jedi, sending forth a Force push as solid as any stone wall, and a burst of blue Force lightning, unknown to the Jedi, charged all about the trapped and lifted Jedi Padawan." -AOTC novelization

"...I had to begin to show that Dooku had these powers similar to what the Emperor had. Sith powers. Dark Side powers...so we do a little bit of the Sith thing in the beginning to get rid of Anakin and let Obi-Wan have his fight." -Lucas

"...to become the most powerful Jedi, and the only way you can really do that is to go to the Dark side because the Dark side is more powerful. If you want the ultimate power you really have to go to the stronger side, which is the Dark side..." - Lucas [AOTC commentary]

Really? That one was a surprise. Kind of negates Yoda's discussion with Luke in ESB.

I belive Lucas also said something to the effect of: The Dark Side will leave you when you need it most. It might of been later in that same commentary.

Plus I don't think in Lucas' mind there is such a thing as a Sith ghost. From one of the drafts of ANH:

This is a fight you cannot win, Darth. I have grown much since our parting. If my blade finds its mark, you will cease to exist. But, if you cut me down, I will only become more powerful. Heed my words.

Source.

It seems to me it's a trade off.

I suppose that's the nature of the dark side. Power, but no longevity. Eventually it just consumes itself.

Thats what I thought. When Luke asks if the Dark side is stronger, Yoda tells him no.

Yoda isn't exactly impartial though, obviously he would think than the Side he's the foremost practitioner of is the "best". And he would likely tell Luke what he needed to hear to make Luke do as he wanted. :)

It could also depend on how you measure the "power" of the sides, and what use you intend for it. If you need to wreak destruction and violence then the Dark side is clearly stronger. But the Force isn't merely a weapon, there are other aspects to it, which are less useful in situations or fighting and struggle, in which the Light side might be stronger. As has been mentioned before, the Dark side might be more powerful, but the power "burns out" the user quicker than the Light side would.

Yes, I thought of that and forgot to ask Prime -- when exactly did Lucas make the aforementioned statement? Was it when Anakin was appealing to Palpatine for the power to save the life of Padme? I assumed it was, and that's what threw me. I could more likely imagine him saying "the Dark Side is more powerful" during a battle or something. (Even so, isn't it strange how Yoda doesn't get beaten by the baddies?)

Perhaps he changed his mind in between ESB and AOTC?

Anyway, another famous one...

"Its energy sorrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter! You have to feel the Force around you: Here, between you, me, the rock, the tree - everywhere. Even between swamp ... and ship."

Aaah, somehow jedi have been downgraded a little since the OT... :-/

I'd have to go back and watch it, but I think it is pretty much what it says there. If you want to be as powerful as you possibly can be (i.e. abilities, in a nutshell), then you have to go to the darkside, because it can give you access to powers you otherwise couldn't. Off the top of my head there isn't anything that a lightsider can do that a darksider can't.

As to Yoda's statement, the important thing is to keep in mind that that is a character's point of view. In any event, that extra power comes with a great cost, so I don't think Yoda's statement is invalid necessarily.

The funny thing about Yoda's statement is that it kind of contradicts itself. The fact that the dark side provides quicker and easier use of the same powers makes it inherently more powerful, like any tool that lets you do something easier than another tool.
