We parents screw up sometimes (and sometimes, in major ways), and we need forgiveness and understanding just like anyone else. If you don't know why he didn't contact you on your b-day, it would be a good idea to find out--you might be surprised at the reason (or simple oversight--it's happened to me and my dad was terribly embarrassed when he realized what had happened). There are no perfect parents, no perfect kids, and no perfect relationships. Anyone expecting perfection is going to be disappointed 100% of the time. Once he's gone you don't get another chance at that relationship, so now's the time to do something about it instead of using that precious time being angry or disappointed.
