Star Trek XI

Recommended Posts

This one had the difficult task of erasing the bad memories left on the minds of fans on Nemesis. It's a pleasure to say that JJ managed to do just that. The theater had a nice vibe to it yesterday.

The movie must be more than enough to satisfy old time xihiite fans as well as newcomers. It was quite fast paced, managing to capture the watcher's attention at all times. They also did a good thing with the plot, with every significant crewmember having a role to play on the adventure. Not to mention the special role played by Nimoy.

Overrall, an ambitious exploit with excellent results.

I agree... I nearly giggled when I saw Nimoy in the movie. That was surprise that they thankfully didnt blow in any of the trailers.

I never saw Nemesis... but this movie blows all the other ST movies out of the water. It recaptures all the old characters nicely. Ohura is sexy, Scotty was freaking awesome, Bones (one of my favourites) was crochety and sarcastic... even Jim was portrayed as the skirt-chaser he was in the original series without the horrible over-acting of Shattner.

Oh and Nero screaming "Spooooooooock!" Was hilarious. Reminded me so much of Kirk screaming Khan. lol

Also, I so didnt recognize Wynona Ryder as Spock's mother. When I saw her name in the credits, I was like: who the heck did she play!? She actually looked pretty in the movie.

Same here. I needed to mentally recap the movie to figure it was her. :)

Another good point of it was the light-hearted humour. Course Scotty was there to fill that role. Also, the crew actor choices were most fortunate. Especially for Spock and Kirk.

And there's Eric Bana there, too. I mean, he's still an excellent actor, that was surprising.

Going to see it on Wednesday. I'm hoping it's good.

I certainly enjoyed it - despite my earlier uneasiness on a lot of things, it was a great film. I thought it captured a lot of the old Trek atmosphere.

That was a great surprise, indeed! :) Made the movie even better!

I'm really starting to like the new actors in the roles - especially those playing McCoy, Kirk and Spock.

I just saw Star Trek today{a bit thanks to the LucasCast 5 Episode:D}, and it was indeed excellent!! I've never really officially watched any Star Trek movies, staying to the Star Wars franchise, but after watching Star Trek, I think I may be becoming a fan!:D

The plot was well-done, the acting, pretty true to the original show:D In all, it kept my attention the entire time, it didn't let me down for a second.

They developed the characters so well!!

I think one of my favorite lines was one of Scotty's..

"You know....I think I like this ship.....it's excitin'!!!"

Thats the line that made the new Scotty an instant favourite for me. The new Bones was the one where they first showed him on the shuttle griping about going into space and Andorian Shingles. xD

Well holy crap...My neighbor's son (Doug Tait) is in it. Now I have to see it, 'cuz I hella know that guy. He plays the dude sitting between Captain Kirk and Spock (I think) while the two are talking in the bar.

Doug also played Jason in the last scene of Freddy Vs Jason where Jason is coming out of the water with Freddy's head.

Heheh, yeah, that shuttle part was pretty funny indeed:D I thought the part where Kirk's hands began to swell and Bones is constantly pumping some sort've anti-virus or another into him:D

The shuttle part was a good way to introduce the good doctor....:D

Saw the evening showing last night. What was old is new again! Very much enjoyed it, despite it's flaws. I grew up on TOS as my father was a big fan, and those are the characters that pulled my into the ST universe originally. I enjoyed TNG, but after that my interested greatly waned as the other (subpar IMO) series and films came out, to the point where I completely lost interest in Star Trek.

The thing that struck me most about JJ Abrams' film is that I had forgotten how much I love these characters. To a large degree the cast does a stellar job capturing the essence and trademark mannerisms of each of them, without trying to be carbon copies of the original cast (Karl Urban in particular). They regain much of the camp and humor that helped make the original show what it was, which is something I think was lost in the saga as time went on. For that alone the film very much deserves the praise it is receiving. Ultimately, this film is a vehicle to reintroduce these characters to fans old and new, and not so much about the plot itself.

But talk about injecting some Star Wars into Star Trek. Great action scenes, large space battles, and big explosions that were above and beyond what has been in ST before. No doubt this will bring new fans to the series. Luckily there are tons of references both subtle (the eating of a certain apple) and overt to the lore to help appease older fans. I know I certainly appreciated them. In that sense it took note of the formula used by Transformers.

The biggest problem of the film is that it is simply not long enough. Some of the characters, like Checkov and Scotty (as funny and endearing as he is), simply do not get enough screen time to be fleshed out. Nero as the main villain has his motivations covered in a matter of minutes, and it is only due to Bana's performance that he ends up being an interesting character. Also, some of the drastic deviations from the original series took me a bit off guard, which isn't a flaw per se, but it was something I emotionally had to get my head around.

But in the end the film left me happy to see these old friends and wanting more. No doubt about it, Star Trek is back. I'm certain that this will attract fans who have long since left the series behind (me being one). It is a great ride!

finally got to see it today. overall, excellent movie, and it definitely ranks as the best movie of the year so far.

The Good: loved the beginning that was full of emotion. great script that was full of wit. the acting was superb, and i absolutely loved how they played off Spock and Kirk's very different personalities. the intense action was big plus.

The Bad: the rehashed plot element of time traveling ships. its not much of a biggie, though.

The Ugly: just wishing that Scotty and Chekov would've gotten some more screentime. :p

Overall: 9/10

And with that, I definitely want to see this film. Thanks, Prime, for the comprehensive review. I had totally lost interest in Trek, myself, because I thought it had been run into the ground. Hopefully they didn't trounce established canon too badly.
