MrWally
An Oregon Fox News station does a test on the nearby Computer Repair shops. They have a perfectly healthy PC, and then remove the Hard Drive. Every other store they take it to spots the problem immediately and offers no charge. Take a look at what happens with the Geek Squad: http://www.kptv.com/video/19513766/index.html Watch the whole video, the part at the end makes me angry as well. Does anyone else here have computer repair nightmare stories?
jrrtoken
I can't get the video to load, but I get the jest of it. BestBuy is an awful store. Not only are their employees incompetent, but they also practice extreme price gouging. Boba Rhett
When I was about 17 (which incidentally was the final time I ever dared take a pc anywhere) I took my pc in to get the PSU replaced because where I lived that was actually cheaper than buying my own at the store and I didn't want to wait for one online. (It was over the holidays) Anyways, I take it in, they replace it, and I go to pick it up the next morning. The guy walks out from the back, starts saying, "This computer of yours is a few years old but boy is it still a nice-****" and then proceeds to drop it four feet onto their cement floor, destroying my case and God knows what else inside. The next thing out of my mouth was, "Well, it was." But hey, they ended up not charging me for installation.

EnderWiggin
Goddamn, I know exactly what you mean! I tell people that I'll fix their computer for free if they agree to never go to GeekSquad again (friends and family, but that's besides the point). _EW_
Samnmax221
I'm surprised computer repair shops still exist. The majority of the public (****ing retards) uses their computers till they get so bogged down they'll hardly boot up anymore. Then they either buy a new one, or ask someone they know to fix it for them. A good amount of the time the person they ask to fix it isn't terribly much smarter than they themselves are, and makes it worse, thereby forcing them to go with the first option. Q
BestBuy is an awful store. Not only are their employees incompetent, but they also practice extreme price gouging. Sometimes they make extreme pricing mistakes, though, which gives we the consumers the opportunity to strike back. When it does happen, the employees will fight you tooth and nail over it, though; mostly because they want to exploit it themselves. Which makes it all the more gratifying when you win and walk out of the store wearing a ****-eating grin and carrying a sub-$300.00 laptop. For example: http://www.geeksquad.com/services/computer/category.aspx?id=455 I think I almost vomited seeing: Software Install Get that important piece of software up and running on your computer with this software installation service for Mac or PC. We will install and/or repair, configure and update 1 software title and add convenient desktop, start menu and quick launch bar shortcuts for quick and easy access. Software not included. Agent Work Time: About 1 hour House call: $130 In-store: $30 Remote: $50 Give me $1 and I'll do it for you. If you say please I'll do it for free, and in 2-5 minutes. This, too: Operating System Install Running the latest operating system helps maximize PC performance and security. But installation can take hours. Why not leave it to the experts? We’ll provide a complete, professional installation, along with reinstallation of drivers, software and updates. Agent Work Time: 1 to 2 hours House call: $230 In-store: $130 Just... oh my god... put in the disc, follow instructions, wait 20-30 minutes, auto update, install your firewall/anti-virus, done. My price? Give me around $20 and I'll put on the OS, security, media, internet, etc. in 45 minutes. I always knew they were bad, and always laughed seeing stickers for "Let Us install it for $29.99" on a USB Thumb Drive. But holy crap, $130 to put a disc in? That makes me sick. Q
One could undercut their fees by half and still make out like a bandit. Hey, that gives me an idea...

Tommycat
You have no idea how bad it gets installing on some people's machines.... I did on site support before... On some machines and at some houses, it's not worth it at $130... Sure when you can pick and choose who's house you go to, installing for free is great. But when it's your job to sit there and answer every little question they have about the particular piece of software that is only barely able to run on their machine, that price tends to become more and more realistic. Hey, How about installing on a machine while the triplets are screaming and the Rottweiler is slobbering all over your pants, that now you have to go home and change afterwards because the next guy is alergic to animals. Just trying to give you guys some perspective. I don't do on site support any more, but trust me, back when I did it, there were times when I said, "They ain't payin me enough for this S4!" PR-0927
Best Buy disgusts me. I just hate seeing things like their ridiculous HDMI cable pricing. The one near me has HDMI cables at the cheapest for $50 bucks...the next level up is $100 - the Monster cable nonsense. And I got a perfectly good HDMI cable for roughly $10 from elsewhere - I know Newegg and online retailers sell for much, much cheaper, but I wasn't willing to wait for a cable shipment. But seriously, I can't believe I applied to work at Geek Squad before. I'm glad I didn't get the job. Best Buy has such stupid employees (as does virtually every store) when it comes to matters with technology and PCs. It all just reminds me of this site: http://rinkworks.com/stupid/ *Twitches.* - PR-0927
EnderWiggin
Just trying to give you guys some perspective. Thanks but no thanks. No one deserves $130 for installing one program that would take a computer familiar person 10 minutes to do. It's bull**** and it's overpriced nonsense, and Q's right: I'd even deal with the triplets if I could pocket $100 in 15 minutes. _EW_
Darth Avlectus
Well, it really does suck when you know what you're looking for and customer service has no idea. I.E. BUYING A NEW HARD DRIVE. Where can I get one to replace it? Geek Squad ranks up there with nauzeating. Sony Vaio customer service is also suck. They keep saying like "if you want to bring it in for a diagnostic. blah-blah-blah-blah-blah" Half educated people on the other end: Best anyone can do is become self educated and not depend on anyone else...and buy a grounded wrist strap with some nice tools. Their connectors are nice. Their people can go **** a camel, far as I'm concerned.
