... If you're girlfriend is into Twilight, then if anything, you should be giving it a chance - to make her happy... Not being a jerk and dousing her enthusiasm. :disaprove

If I knew someone who did that, I would probably play whip it evertime I saw them. Theres a difference between being in a relationship and being someones bitch.

I did give Twilight a try. Both the book and the movie. I finished the book, then with encouragement from my sisters I burned it. And the movie made me want to :barf: and then... :chop1:

I'm not a jerk about it. We just don't talk about it. I made it clear I want nothing to do with it, and she is okay with that

eh...my wife is in to things that I couldn't possibly care less about. She doesn't force me to participate (usually) and I don't attempt to make her take interest in things that I like that she doesn't (videogames...prime example). At the same time we have shared interest in enough things that we do just fine.

*edit* not on the original topic I know, but I wanted to toss my two cents in on the whole trying things your significant other is interested in just to make them happy

I don't mean "force yourself to like it", but rather give it a chance, and if you don't like it, not to hate on it for her sake. How would you like it if your special person shoved an article or thread in your face bitching about video games? She may not like it, but she doesn't have to be annoying about it.

Ah. That's good. It just appeared from you post that in your encompassing hate for twilight, you didn't stop to consider her feelings. But if i may ask, if you don't talk about it, and are ok with each others standpoints, why do you want to show her this thread?

Aww, just when things started to get interesting too. :wonder:

Anyway, the movie initially had an age limit of 15 in this country, but after an uprising by pre-teens and media uproar the authorities felt they had to lower the age limit to 11. Kind of funny.

@ Darth InSidious: I haven't read/watched anything Twilight either, but I know enough that when people mention it, it reminds me of how stupid my niece is when it comes to her relationships. She's been some pretty stupid things already, stuff I can't mention here... but the worst part is that she never learns and remains a vacuous moron.

And that pisses me off and makes me very sad.

Let me rephrase.. She knows and understands I want nothing to do with it.. She just doesn't care and talks about it anyway. I want her to understand why I hate it

She talks about it anyway? Well, thats not good...

Aww, just when things started to get interesting too.

Absolutely. i was just going to break out the popcorn, and maybe throw my two cents in. :(

Alright, i just finished Breaking Dawn, and have decided its the best in the series.

When you're already attached to the characters, this one makes your eyes bug out and mouth drop in horror, as you madly flip the pages. (No, not because of any quality issue or whatever :xp:).

The series: From the start of Twilight to the end of Breaking Dawn, i started out from loving it, then to just liking it, to loving it again, then thinking nothing of it, to disliking it, to liking it again, and then ending on a good tone between "liking it" and "loving it".

Twilight was ok, New Moon was "meh" (movie took from book), Eclipse was much better, and i thoroughly enjoyed Breaking Dawn. From what i can see, the focus on "Edward's perfect face" really dies down a lot from Eclipse to Breaking Dawn.

My favorite characters (and i do have some now), are Jacob, Carlisle, and Bella (<-- I'll explain!).

Jacob, because he was just such a warm and happy person, and even though he became more aggressive after he became a Shapeshifter, he still had that bit of warmth still in him. (that's right, the books specify that the Quiluete boys are not actual werewolves. The real werewolves, "Children of the Moon" as they are called, have been hunted to near extinction by the Volturi. What Jacob is is actually similar to the character from that videogame called Prey.)

His inner conflict is so interesting to read, and i love how the last part of Eclipse and the second part of Breaking Dawn shifts to his perspective, which was great to read.

Carlisle has got to be one of the best characters in the series.

He was the son of an Anglican pastor when he was turned into a vampire in the 16th century. His father hated vampires and all evil things (though Carlisle wasn't so fanatical) and led raids with other pastors against them (torches and pitchforks, often killing humans rather than evil creatures) and made Carlisle join in when he was of age. During a raid, he was attacked bitten by a weak vampire. He crawled away and writhed in pain for three days as he changed. Because of what he had become, he tried to kill himself many times but never succeeded. When he couldn't stand the thirst any longer, he fed on some deer, finding that he didn't have to drink human blood to stay alive. After about three centuries of resisting it, he is all but immune to the pull of human blood. He is very learned, and is an excellent doctor, which he became to save human lives. He is extremely compassionate and loving, and after three centuries he has never taken a human life.

Bella changes a lot. She stops being whiny, and grows to be kick ass, and actually becomes kinda cool.

While i was reading the series, i felt assured because of its classification. Until i read Breaking Dawn. My mind boggled and i flipped the book over...

There it was, staring right back at me:

"CHILDREN'S FICTION".

WHAT.

Don't mind the violence and mild supernatural horror, its just one thing: Adult Themes...

They were just themes, until Breaking Dawn.

Sure, none of its explicit or anything, but come on.

This is Teen fiction, not children's fiction!

I think 14 year olds would be fine to read this, maybe mature 13 year olds, but 12 year olds?? 12 year olds are kids! They're tiny! With squeaky voices and immature brains!

Maybe im just out of it, but what do 12 year olds read nowadays?

Alright, i just finished Breaking Dawn, and have decided its the best in the series.

I am speechless.

He... he falls in love with their daughter! F-freakin baby practically destroys her! Edward RAPES HER essentially!

How is it the best one? It was by far the most offensive and utterly DISGUSTING of all of the books?! Bella manipulates people to do what she wants, cries for months on end, and is mentally handicapped! She's the most offensive female role model I've ever seen! She an utterly awful, horrid human being whom I would beat to death if she were in my presence! All the characters except maybe Jacob are awful, awful people and awful, awful role models! Edward tries to convince Bella to have an abortion for **** sake. Doesn't that bother you?

Sigh... The book is about pedophilia, older men fetishes, and is NOTHING but softcore porn for girls. If you wanna like it... well, be my guest.

****... I just... ugh... I can't read anymore of this thread... I was sure you'd see the light, as so many do, upon reading Breaking Dawn but...

woah woah woah, calm down there avery. I suppose i should have mentioned that halfway through reading it, i forced myself to stop analyzing the characters and their actions, and only focus on the story. i'm sure you know that i hate spoilers, as i have made it clear on many occasions. I had a revelation: The reason i hate i spoilers so much is that it ruins the experience of whatever it belongs to. I'm all into experience, and will get very annoyed if anyone tries to give me spoilers that will ruin the experience of things i even only slightly intend to watch/read/play/whatever.

So halfway through the book i realized that analyzing all these characters and judging them was making me lose any amount fun i previously had reading these, and by then i had already spent a crapload of money on them, and so i resolved to ignore these discrepancies and just try to read it from a basic non analytical point of view.

On top of this, i realized "why the hell am i even analyzing it? none of it is real in the slightest. its inconsequential and pointless. And i'm not even a fanatic (i know because i read it last night, and am already forgetting a lot of it). So just read it, and shelf it."

I paid as much attention to it as a fairy tale.

I like it because of Jacob's viewpoint, the confrontation with the volturi, and the impending action, and the tension when Bella was creating provisions for Nessie and Jacob. (that was so sad. i think if things did turn out that way, the book ending with Jacob running with Nessie i think i wouldve like it a bit more, because it wouldve made me feel. like a sad movie. like it was worth my hard earned money)

I also forgot to mention that i had lost all inspiration from Edward after we discussed him in this thread, and stopped liking Bella for the same reason, and only liked her again at the end

because i thought she was going to rip Jane to shreds (very, very, very angry and extremely strong vampire = one hell of a fight *shrug*. perhaps you forgot, but i'm a guy

He... he falls in love with their daughter!

Not his fault, and he's 16 until she is. Also, i remember that he didn't think of her in that way at all, and that if he did, in his own words, Edward woudve killed him.

Edward RAPES HER essentially!

Show spoiler

Eh? i though she basically raped him

Bella manipulates people to do what she wants, cries for months on end, and is mentally handicapped!

"cries for months on end?" as i said, im already forgetting parts of the story... i can't recall this. what do you mean by "mentally handicapped"?

She's the most offensive female role model I've ever seen!

personally, i don't exactly have the urge to go fall in love with shiny people and then kill myself over it.

All the characters except maybe Jacob are awful, awful people and awful, awful role models!

As i said, the only "role model" i would have looked at was Edward, and that was how he opens the car door for Bella.

As to the characters, i must ask: what about Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Emmet, and Seth Clearwater?

Carlisle, who spends his days saving human lives? Esme, a loving mother, Alice, (i found her condescension toward jacob very annoying, but she eased up later)

Show spoiler
(hidden content - requires Javascript to show)
who sacrificed her reputation to help salvage any hope of the situation?
Emmet, who is just a big fun guy? And Seth, a boy of pure heart?

Edward tries to convince Bella to have an abortion for **** sake. Doesn't that bother you?

As much as i was bothered by the amount of human lives that were constantly lost in the US thanks to a big vampire reunion. It is somewhat disturbing, sure, but havn't we already established that neither of the two are exactly what one would call "rational"?

12 year olds read Twilight apparently. I'm amazed you liked Breaking Dawn, I thought it was an atrocious end to the series. Eclipse being the final book would of been much better.

What makes you say that? (your opinion)

Well I was rather annoyed and disturbed by the pregnancy stuff.

Show spoiler
(hidden content - requires Javascript to show)

Well, i kind of expected that pregnancy stuff. I mean, the whole story's freaky already. Also, as far as Bella being ripped up internally, thats also to be expected as well. They already specified that vampire children can't be controlled, just like human children must be taught restraint. At least Nessie wasn't a full vampire kid... then Bella wouldve been absolutely wasted. (more than she already was!)

What exactly did you find annoying/disturbing?

(remember: hidden tags! :) )

Then the second half of the book was preparing for a battle that never happened unfortunately. So many people arrived! I was hoping for a big battle! (Eclipse had a moderate one)

Show spoiler
(hidden content - requires Javascript to show)

I was actually torn between battle or no battle. On one hand, it wouldve been an epic fight, but it would also mean that the only people left wouldve been Jacob, Renesmee, Alice and Jasper. That wouldve been quite sad. But then, if that did happen, i think it wouldve made it a better book. (But i have a feeling Stephanie Meyer wouldve skinned alive and boiled in hot oil by her Twilight fanatics if she did that. :xp:)

As i have said, i judged this book on how (and how much) it made me feel (like a movie). Not feelings in spite of the book, but because of it. It took me on more of a ride than the others.

I'm really curious about just how they're going to keep Eclipse and especially Breaking Dawn "M for Mature Audiences" (aus/nz ratings) while still being faithful to the story. such as:

...Simultaneously, Edward - all but invisible with speed - had twisted backward and caught the unsuspecting Riley by the arm. It had looked like Edward planted his foot against Riley's back, and heaved ---

The little campsite was filled with Riley's piercing shriek of agony.

They're probably going to have to die it down a lot to keep it watchable for the preteens.

And the dodgy bits... iirc not that much of a problem for Eclipse, but Breaking Dawn... I swear, if they fully made this book into a movie, it'd be without a doubt,

"Restricted-16" at the least.

Ehh...well, I don't know what most kids read, but when I was twelve, I read stuff by G. A. Henty.

His books are pretty good, by the way--as long as you don't mind his rather biased perspective on history.

I think, then, you mustve been smarter than the average 12 year old.

12 was when i started reading star wars novels. IIRC those were never dodgy as much as these Twilight books. And they were supposed to be adult novels!

"Biased perspective on history"?

Actually, I just had nothing else interesting to read.

"Biased perspective on history"?

Henty fully believed that the British had a right and duty to conquer the 'uncivilized' people of the world. He will sometimes admit that one of the major British generals did something wrong (I believe he said that Clive did in With Clive in India), but far too often, the savages (i.e. the natives) are portrayed as heartless beasts who simply refuse to give up their uncivilized ways and let the British guide them into the British lifestyle. There was one book I read about the Boer War (I don't remember the book's name) where...frankly, I found it hard to cheer for the heroes, 'cuz they were shooting people who seemed to just want their land back. Henty seemed to be of the opinion that the only good savage was a savage who didn't mind the British taking over his country.

Also, any 'savage' who mistreats an English woman in any way shape or form is portrayed as the worst kind of monster (admittedly, any English man who mistreats an English woman is also portrayed as the worst kind of monster), but one thing that the books usually forget to mention is that...um...well, the British weren't exactly into the whole 'peaceful takeover' thing...

It's been a while since I read the books. Back then, I could explain the British propoganda a whole lot better.

PS: If you want to read some really good Henty books that are devoid of the annoying British Empire stuff, read The Cat of Bubastes, For the Temple, With Lee in Virginia, Beric the Briton, and The Young Carthaginian. Those are the main ones I remember. :)

Ah. A proponent of the British's repeated molestation of dark skinned nation's peace and wellbeing...

By "peaceful takeover" do you happen to mean leaving the female population of the recipient country's emotional and physical wellbeing intact?

Ah, why not? Im bored again after finishing Twilight. Ill give it a shot.

Also, gimme a title thats quintessentially Henty. (b/dastardly view and all :xp:)

Yea, pretty much. (The Henty Heroes usually don't engage in such activities, however--they just have a ridiculously inflated view of themselves because they're British.)

Hmm, lemme see... (goes over to the bookshelf)

The Tiger of Mysore is one that I remember being quite British-ized. Also, (if I remember correctly, of course), Rujub the Juggler, With Clive in India, and The Final Reckoning are a few others. I enjoyed all three of them, despite the thoroughly British PoV.

Some other good books are Winning his Spurs, Through Russian Snows, Out on the Pampas, The Dash for Khartoum, The Curse of Carne's Hold, The Treasure of the Incas, Condemned as a Nihilist, Redskin and Cowboy, Colonel Thorndyke's Secret, Wulf the Saxon, With Wolfe in Canada, and The Lost Heir. My sister says that In the Heart of the Rockies is good too, but I haven't read that one yet.

My favorites are definitely the five I told you before, with Winning His Spurs and The Tiger of Mysore close behind them.

Hope that list holds ya over for a while.
