Internet Addiction

This morning I didnt go out shopping with my little brother because I was too busy playing SOF2. After he came back he game me this spiel about how I'm on the computer too much and the family thinks I'm a loser.

My entire life I've enjoyed using computers. It wasnt until my late high school years where I got into coding, messing with things, the Internet, and gaming though. My jobs have all been computer/tech/telecom related, and in the end have gotten me no where (the telecomm bubble burst and I lost my job, going back to school as an engineering major now).

I'm sure a bunch of you are probably the types that sit in your rooms or your living rooms for many hours a day and do things like gaming, browsing, forum posting, and the like. Do you ever think that you may be addicted to the stuff? It sounds weird to say that you've formed a bond with a machine thats a gateway to an electronic social network, but I think it's happened to me and a few of my friends. What are your thoughts on this?

Part of me is thinking I should sell all of my computers (I have like 6 of em which do various things on my LAN, along with a bunch of Cisco equipment). It would make my electric bill smaller and my room would be much quieter. I have a friend who got a degree at MIT, worked for a startup, went broke after it went south,m and now works as an assistant in a French pastry bakery having the time of her life. Should I do something like that? Change my major completely away from the tech sector? Sorry for airing out all this crap on the forums, but I'd like your honest feedback & if possible share experiences.

NOOOO, my family thinks the same about me, but i know i do usefull things with my computer, and i have alot off palls on the internet, so don't get rid off your computer!!!

so what if i'm addicted, it is better than an alcohol addiction, or a drugs addiction.

i skip party's 2 play on the computer, but i don't mind, i'm happy when i'm on my computer.

always think, am i happy doing this?

DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR COMPUTERS!:D

i spend 3 years at college studying computers and when i finished i left my job at the local pizza hut and set out to find work as a technician. years have passed and i can still only find temp work and the occasional free-lance stuff and i make no where near what i was earning at pizza hut. i apply to every job computer-related in my area and i've only had a couple of interviews. now i've become lazy, i work about 4 hours a day and the rest of the time i'm on the net, playing computer games, watching tv. sometimes i think about just going back to pizza hut or moving to a different area but i only think about for 5 minutes and then carry on what i'm doing.

i know how you feel NerfYoda, it like the film office space, you feel like jacking it all in and become a builder or something.

i wish i could give you advice because that advice would probably help me too.

they say once you have established the problem, you’re half way to the solution.

let's hope this is the case.

in a few years when many more people are addicted to technology and the the older generation arnt around as much, then computer addiction will be accepted and no longer classified as a 'bad' addiction. Yes, I am addicted to my computer, yes I am addicted to Pop, and yes I am addicted to cigarettes, but i dont dislike the fact that i am addicted to those things. If I had a real problem with something I was doin, then I would stop doing it. No one does things they hate unless they get paid a lot of money for it. :D

Sivy: I hope thats true. :)

It's almost exactly like Office Space. I want to work with my hands. This sedentary lifestyle has led to nothing but bad things (weight gain, that I'm beating down now that I don't have a well paying job anymore :), carpal tunnel is on the horizon, and my back hurts alot now).

I used to be a decent artist. I can't make a living from that though, and I.. clashed alot.. with the art community when I studied (The Austin art community is full or pretentious *******s. grrr). I did want to be a high school art teacher for some time though. Maybe I'll give the tech industry the bird and get a teaching certificate.

Hmm heheh its like thinking out loud.. :p

I think that you should sell some of your computers! Maybe change your major!

I'm kinda addicted o the internet, you know browsing, posting at forums, and so on!

It becomes pretty boring some times..!

I have a friend he sits up all night to play Runescape, then he sleeps for like 1 or 2 hours and starts playing Runscape again! On Weekdays he gets up real early just to play Runescape! Hes really addicted to the internet, and its pretty sad.....cuz he has lots of stuff he could do instead!

But addicted to reading isn't classed as bad?????

Considering i'm on my comp quite a lot but i'm proof you can have to lives at the same time :) I think that you shouldn't sell you comps and totally get away from computers. You never know if you see the job you're looknig for and you're jsut right for it and you;ve jsut sold all your comps and your borke. Anwyay maybe i'm jsut naively rambling but that's what i often do.

I am addicted to my computer i suppose but it's more like a social place where you can know people's persoanility and use your imagination to think of what they're really like.

I wouldn't say that I'm addicted, but usually that is for another person to say. On weekdays, I spend about an hour to and hour and a half online, but on weekends more like 7 our 8 hours. I am not so good and sports, and I don't enjoy them, but I read and browse the internet alot.

*Does math for if I sell a comp, how many SW books can I buy*...

yup im addicted. but i come from a family of drug addicts and alcoholics so comp addiction ISNT too bad of a thing imo.

just since starting to play online my typing skills (speed mostly) have gone WAY up. thats a skill that pretty much all good jobs will require later on down the line. computer games teach us a fair bit about thinking in different ways.

ok so im bullcrapping just a little. but in all honesty if this "addiction" is keeping us away from going out and getting high and busted by the cops then isnt it a good thing? i dunno, maybe you think like my dad does: if you enjoy anything enough to spend a decent amount of time on it its an addiction.... and addictions are bad so you're not allowed to do it anymore"

seriously, he yelled at me for reading too much. he complained that it would get me nowhere in life. so i took up basketball down the street. then i was doing THAT too much and wasnt allowed out. so i started watching TV but thats unhealthy too (i kinda agree with that one) so i moved to comp games. now im banned from comp games till 9 every night. so i post like mad on forums and read strats for various games i play.

I was a journalism major. Joined the navy as a journalist. Had a pretty lousy time doing that. Came out and nobody cared that I was a Navy Journalist, the worst paper in town wouldn't hire me. Became a shipping clerk and loved that till the place closed down around my ears. Lost my apartment and my whole life, then I realized I have always used a computer.......so I took all I had left and bought a junky little gateway toaster and have since souped it up a bit. Now I realize my computer is the key to my existence. Does your computer make you happy? Mine is a tool of excapism from my otherwize mundane life. I will do something in the PC field. I don't care what it is. Money is not the biggest issue as long as I can support myself and have my property back.
