obi
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Roy Barnes, the great governer of Gerogia(heavy sarcasm) has declared a new and improved act(more sarcasm). In this act, a student will take an end-of-core exam. This is not like semester exams, mind you, because if you fail this, you fail the class despite your grade, and you must re-take the entire core again. You can doo all of your work, get A's, B's, whatever, and fail that test, and fail the class. How's that for care for education? I, a student, hope this moron gets voted out of office. I encourage all of you Georgia voters(however many are on here, probably none) to vote NAY for Barnes's re-election.

Surfnshannon
ya they always come up with stupid testing - that costs to much money to implement - too much time - then its a failure and you never hear about it again. what is this test supposed to accomplish?
obi
I have no idea what it's supposed to accomplish. Barnes is just an stupid democrat with extra money, and he decided to dump it on more "education." Frankly, to me, thi isn't Education. It's putting more expectations on today's youth, which is not good. We have too much to do in too little time, but politicians couldn't give a rats ass. Jedi_Monk
So just one bad test day will royally screw you up? Sounds an awful lot like football to me Anyway, teaching to a stupid test is about the worst thing you can do. It limits individual knowledge, and helps to create perfect little cogs for the corporate machine. This kind of teaching prepares kids for their faceless positions in the job force! Impressionable children are put into a subculture where peer pressure stomps out individuality and they are taught to unquestioningly respect whomever's in charge. Standardized curriculum at once limits their knowledge, while extracurricular activities--which students are encouraged to participate in for the sake of their "social lives" and college applications--and homework, leave them with little time to develop a unique education of their own. Intelligence is not rewarded, but punished by one's peers, so that one learns to conform! It's a way to self-regulate the lower and middle classes! Darth Talliusc
thats horrible. i see this as an increasing trend worldwide... (ok maybe just the western world but thats where i live so its what i see). in canada (well my lil corner of it) we have to do standardized math tests and literacy tests. the principle is proper i guess but the implementation is awful. we get questions that ask our personal opinion and get told that they are wrong because they are not the opinion we are supposed to have, they show us a picture and ask us what is happening inside it. the picture is of a girl and a boy, the girl is mixing something in a large bowl while the boy eats a piece of bread. (the photocopy was decayed and barely recognizable). we are asked what is taking place. 100% of my class said that they saw 2 children preparing and eating food in the late 1800's (the essay before it was about life in that timeperiod) and the "correct" answer is that they are "at play". *edit: does that make my entire class illiterate? according to our gov were borderline retarded for not seeing playful joy in eating bread and mixing a bowl* excuse me but what the hell are these politicians playing at? leave the education up to the educators and administrators. good lord its terrible what they are doing. this is money that could be spent on textbooks so that we actually LEARN the material. it shouldnt be spent on seeing if everybody all over knows the same crap. we have the same goddamn curriculum but we spend all this money. no we WASTE all this money on keeping politicians happy. it pisses me off to no end. Ratmjedi
I guess that most of us can say that all politicians are just dumba$$'s that care about nothing but getting re-elected. I seriously hope that all these bastard's die or get old and that we have a new type of politician in the future. We need to get young people into office that are not going to be worried about getting re-elected. We need people that are actually going to make smart decisions and that aren't going to screw us up even more. I am just happy that I don't have to take anymore State test's because I am a Senior and we don't have to do that anymore. Wooohhhhoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! Guardian Omega
What the flying ****?!? Looks like a way to decrease education funds to schools, if memory serves me correct, which it doesn't.......Correct me if I'm wrong, but lower scores=lower funds?
BigTeddyPaul
Here in CA the lower the scores the higher the funds most of the time. Ironic ain't it? It has something to do with taking away money from the smart kids to allow them to get a little dummer in order to make the stupid kids get a little smarter. Sometimes it isn't even about smart vs stupid why these kids get such bad test scores. CA has the highest (no quote please) % of immigrants each year. A lot of these people cannot read or write English (BIG Generalization) and these little kids who are like 8 are expected to learn 2 languages and write in 2 languages and do math and all that by the time they are 8 and wonder why the person in MI who is also 8 has higher test scores. Overlooked fact. That is one of the reasons why most school kids get dumber the more westward you go. As a product of almost all hemispheres I can vouch for this. I used to have 2 hours of homework every night. When I came to CA I used to do my homework 15 minutes before class before all my classes and get As excluding Calculous. That was a #%@$. My sister is a bad test taker. It is not that she doesn't know the stuff she just gets all nervous and locks up and her mind goes blank. This is especially true if you tell her she has a limited time. I would hate for that rule to be in effect here although we do have tests that you have to pass to pass HS but they are easy from what I hear. I graduated a year before they started the testing. Did they guy Barnes win? BigTeddyPaul
