Andy867
I was just reading up on this article that proves that First-Person Shooters(FPS) like Jedi Outcast, DOOM, Unreal Tournament series are actually GOOD for youths and adults alike, since they cause the brain to respond to more active events. Here is a a brief summary from the article found here And now, the news that every parent dreads. Researchers are reporting today that first-person-shooter video games the kind that require players to kill or maim enemies or monsters that pop out of nowhere sharply improve visual attention skills. Experienced players of these games are 30 percent to 50 percent better than nonplayers at taking in everything that happens around them, according to the research, which appears today in the journal Nature. They identify objects in their peripheral vision, perceiving numerous objects without having to count them, switch attention rapidly and track many items at once. ...First-person action games increase the brain's capacity to spread attention over a wide range of events So, keep up on playing the games, but also, never tell your parents, "Hey, don't make me study. Give me another grenade." (Probably won't go over well with the 'rents)

Andy867
Yea, look at the senator who is trying to ban ALL video games, not just FPS, from the market. He for some odd reason(probably was neglected in childhood), believes that video games diminish the intellect of today's youth.. And like Vin Diesel said in XXX. "C'mon dick, its the only education we got"
leXX
My daughter (5) is very very good at UT2003. She plays lots of educational games but one day she saw me playing it and asked if she could have a go. At first I thought, nah, it's shooting people, but then I realised, it's just a game and it's not like she doesn't see mindless violence on tv every day so I let her have a go. She loves it. I know it is doing her hand eye co-ordination a lot of good, and I know she knows it's just a game, so I let her play it now and then. I even have the odd LAN game with her. Andy867
Sure, I don't see why not, because what these so-called experts on youth education don't take into account is the idea that over 99% know the difference between reality, and what is really just a game. and all of those 99% know that if you shoot someone in real life, they will die, whereas with games, they just respawn. And people like that senator obviously make the situation worse because like I said in another thread, I don't see why we need censorship. I mean, look at all these games, and if a kid doesn't like a movie because of its content, they don't have to watch it.. Same with a game, if they don't like it personally, they don't have to play it, but if someone likes a game, thats their choice. Which I say more power to them for choice. ckcsaber
I saw this little article as well New research at the University of Rochester has found that young adults who regularly play action-packed video games are better at tracking objects simultaneously and dealing with fast-changing visual information, according to an Associated Press report. A control experiment showed that people who do not normally play games can develop enhanced visual skills when trained to play them. The Rochester study included two groups of test subjects, with 16 men age 18 to 23 in one test and 17 separate individuals in a second. The researchers said more study would be needed to determine why video games have this effect. I'd gladly help them out with the testing........... Andy867
Likewise, also in that article I posted, it said that most people who don't play video games can walk into a room and only identify 4 objects before they need to start counting, whereas gamers like you and I could walk into the same room and identify 10 objects before we have to start counting. Which I can totally understand. Video Games like Jedi Outcast and UT2k3 are made to keep the eyes moving, and not like RPG where you slowly advance. I hate to think what my reaction speed would be if I didn't play games then...except for when I occasionally reach for the hyperdrive switch, I think playing X wing in my youth has made me a better driver too. Andy867
I know what you mean, when I get onto the interstate, I always try to for the quick change to 3rd speed then to 4th in a split second, thinking my car is going 100+ mph;)
WolfmanNCSU
One study that I always think is funny is the thumb usage between youths and adults. Young people tend to use their thumbs more like on cell phones and remotes as compared to adults who tend to use their index finger. They say it is because of the thumb coordination skills developed from playing games and using controlers and such. Plus adults used there index finger when dialing on the base of old phones. Just an interesting study. At least I think it is.

C'jais
Originally posted by jokemaster But lack of sunrays isn't nessecarily a bad thing. Let me put it this way: It is. UNLESS you live in a tropical climate and are unaccustomed to it. Skin cancer 'n all dat. Of course I'm talking about excess, but that's mostly what parents rage against anyway. I don't think many people would deny that a little gaming now and then is completely harmless.

Writer
I wish my parents would believe something like that. That would be way awesome. I would end up playing games as much as possible. Then my eyes would fry. I've been on the computer for an hour and my eyes are bad already.
platypus202
If my parents heard of this reasearch, they would just say all athe bad things about videogames.
