Jedi_Vogel
1. Whereas Newbie is kinda cute and doesn't make people feel bad, n00b is downright rude 2. "n00bs" are people too...most of them 3. Those who are "expert" were "n00bs" at one point, though in their "era" the word "n00b" probably didn't exist. 4. Being new at something is suddenly a terrible terrible thing (watch some of the language thrown at "n00bs" on some JO/JA servers) 5. "n00bs" cannot escape their "n00bness" without the help of those "experts". 6. Being new is not the same as being a [insert random bad words, that some "n00bs" are subjected to] person. 7. The only advantage to the word "n00b" is that it is "b00n", spelt backwards. 8. "n00bs" should be encouraged in whatever they try and not put off by "experts", who use the word "n00b" to put them off. The word n00b should be banned fullstop. Oh and the "experts" here are noone on Lucasforums, because everyone on here has been great, especially the people on the JA Mapping forum, where I usually hang out when not in the Swamp (thanks to you people ). Newer people are encouraged and not slated for not knowing something. It's in other walks of internet-life that I hate to see newer people discouraged from something they could either excel in or at least enjoy. The n00b is dead, long live the Newbie P.S. sorry for the randomness of this thread
Doomie
N00b and Newb are two different words, and in the games i play online, they also have two different meanings: Newb= a new guy that just isn't quite as good as the others because he lacks experience, but it's not their fault, and n00b= some guy that's supposed to be good and has been playing the game for years and still sucks at it. ET Warrior
Banning the word won't make things change. They'd come up with a new word for it. You'll never change the fact that people who are really good at video games like to harrass and insult the people who haven't. It's a way of life. Mainly cuz they have no lives to begin with, and they get a...creamy feeling in their pants when they 'pwn a n00b' as it were.
Neverhoodian
Ugh, thanks for the bad mental picture, Kain. Vogel does have a point. We were all "newbies" once, after all. As long as there are 12-year-olds with low self esteem, though, I don't think the term "n00b" will go away any time soon.
Joetheeskimo
The only time I use n00b is when someone's being an ******* on purpose. Newbie = New, but trying. N00b = Not trying, only trying to annoy other people. And I never use "n00b" in games, because I'm generally a newbie myself. But on forums, when some 8-year old is posting a ton of exclamation marks, spamming, and over-using smilies, typing in all caps...thats a good example of a n00b. I'm annoyed with n00bs, especially at the phpBB Support Forums, because they don't try to search for the help they need- they just post away claiming "I NEED HELP NOW! IT'S URGENT!" MennoniteHobbit
Originally posted by Poggle what i wanna know is which bright spark used "00" instead of "oo" its just pointless Well, the term "n00b" is practically always used as an insult, and with curses, you tend to substitute words with symbols and/or numbers. So, "noob" became "n00b".

El Sitherino
when I call someone a noob it's because they're new to the game and they claim whenever they're beaten that the person who beat them was cheating and thus the term noob is thrown at them... that and because when you call them an ******* the admin usually slaps you around
Alegis
A newbie is somehting who is new, nothing wrong with that. Though people who are new usually suck -> n00b gets the translation of beeing bad. If you wish to use another word for someone who is new, use rookie. I remember my first day in JO i was like "OMG how did he walk on a wall?" and someone would come and say "K leave me and the rookie alone, ill teach em", was fun. Always helped others in JO since then I don't use n00b though, because newbies are your friend, unless they're on your team. I use "idiots" for TKers
Tyrion
Newbie- Someone who's new to a game and will take advice and help. Everyone was one of these, so it's not offensive. Noob- Someone who never takes anybody's advice, who thinks they're the best player even though they aren't, and pretty much is a jackass.
