well, i think that some of you probably heard that Sony announced the PS3 pricing at E3. for those that didn't, you'll be looking at a similar type sale that the 360 has: a basic version and a combo package with extra hardware. the key is price: $499 for the basic version and $599 for the combo package. details here.

now, compare that to the upcoming Nintendo Wii. as announced today, the Wii will not exceed a $250 pricetag. no word on what kind of hardware is going to be included in whatever the final price will be, but the boldness to price a next gen console that low is no doubt something revolutionary in its own right.

question is, come Christmas when all the consoles are supposed to be out, which one would you rather spend your hard earned money on, if at all??

$600 is well beyond the outer limits of what I would spend for a console. The $500 one is even much to far and it's quite gimped even. :/

I didn't think I'd ever buy another Nintendo. It was a hard fight but Nintendo's won me over with the Wii (aside from the name -_-). I would like to see some left handers play the games and tell me how it feels though, as I am slightly worried still.

When the premium 360 hit's below 350, I'll buy it and when I find a Wii for under 225 I'll buy it. I'd never even consider a PS3.

P.S. you have the 360 listed as $499, it's $399 for the premium one.

*voted for PC*

I bought a PS2 when GTA:SA came out and while I enjoyed it throughly, the aforementioned hardware has done nothing but collect dust for the past year. It's obvious that there are some benefits to console gaming, but I love the freedom that PC gaming provides.

Well, you don't need to upgrade it constantly, just do as I did - save some money (for about a year), plan what parts you want to upgrade and when you've saved enough money, recheck the prices and buy the best your saved up money can buy.

This won't ensure that every newer game worls perfectly, but it will work pretty good - you don't have to have the optimum requirements for a game to be able to play it.

I'd have to end up replacing almost every part to upgrade my current computer. :(

Anyways, I'd still much rather spend $300 in the immediate future on a console that I know will play correctly whatever I get for it for it's entire duration rather than wait for a year and still not be able to play newer games.

PC all the way. I have no intention to buy a next gen console.

I bought an xbox sometime sgo and just as Achilles' PS2, it does absolutely nothing apart collecting dust. I just feel too limited when playing console games. I love to tweak games to my liking and the pc has much more uses than just gaming.

Not that I can't afford it but there's no way I will pay $659 Canadian Dollars (PS3 price) + 15.025% taxes just for a gaming device. It's almost the price of a computer. At that price I can get pretty good upgrades for my pc.

Not too surprising that the PC-holics lead the voting on an Internet forum such as this. Why? Console gamers don't have the ability to browse the Internet like PC's. :p That might change when consoles can browse the Internet like PC's currently can. Sounds like the new Nintendo console might be heading in that direction.

But yeah, I'm a PC gamer. Don't have much in the way of twitch skills. I bought an Xbox 2 years ago and have played KotOR (but didn't finish), KotOR: TSL (but didn't finish), and Star Wars Clone Wars (because it came with the Xbox). I'd rather spend my $400USD or more on upgrading my PC. I have to admit though the new Nintendo console has piqued my interest. If it's priced at $200USD I may just buy it for novelty's sake. :D

EDIT:

Edit by D3: 15.025% my mistake... 7% federal sales tax + 7.5% provincial sales tax but calculated on top of the other one...they tax the taxes here...and that's after they've taken half of your income

Like Achilles and Darth333 I had gotten a console (XBox) and it mostly acts as a stand for my fan. :xp:

15.25% Taxes??? Wow! :eyeraise: And I complain about our 7.75% Taxes!

Edit: Half? I'll never gripe about my measly US taxes again!

There's no way that I'm going to get a PS3, it's waaay too much money for me. I mostly do stick to playing PC games(nothing beats the mouse and keyboard), but I am thinking of picking up a 360, because it isn't out of my price range, and they are pretty fun.

Wrong. By the time the PS3 comes out, it's going to be 6% + 7.5% ;)

I voted PC even if mine is aging very rapidly. Might buy a cool laptop for Uni though so all is fine :)

I'm gonna go for PC, I can't see spending that kind of money for something that just plays games (Don't start with that "But now gaming systems are more like multimedia centers" crap they can't word proccess, spreadsheat, research, photoshop, or do anything usefull as well as a good pc, anything a next gen system can do my pc can do better)

But... a rather large chunk of the money you spend on a PC is soley so it can play games. o_O
perhaps yes, perhaps no. if i were to upgrade my system to a duel-core processor, i'd pretty much have to get an entirely new system given that i'm using an AGP-based video card. but, the performance tradeoff works not just for games but also for a lot of other tasks. and before you ask, yes, i do use my compy for a lot more than just games since i'm a computer science major. and since i'm soon going to be sharing this computer with my sister who is taking 3D animation courses, the new graphics card is definately going to come in handy.

for me, the benefits would definately extend to any application that requires CPU dependant performance, although i would admittedly gain little in terms of graphics performance since i just upgraded to a GeForce 7800 GS.

for somebody else, the benefits can vary. however, the main point is that i both can and do use my computer for more than just games. making anything i do on this compy faster is worth the money. personally, i'm quite satisfied that i spent about $400 upgrading my computer about a month ago rather than $400 on a 360. again, for somebody else, the results can vary.

Considering that despite Blu-Ray technology my PC already smokes the PS3's specs, well... we all know my vote ;)

Nice thing about my job is that the upgrades that go into my computer for gaming are equally as valuable for my media editing job... I like dual purpose upgrading :D

In a sense however, I'm a PC Gamer but stuck in the rut of a consoler as I have to upgrade once new parts are available.. just to keep up with the industry and to be able to cross-platform my job tasks that may or may not have to be sent to a third party.. it's a vicious cycle of "OK, what version of what do you have so that my project will work with yours?"..

Ahh well, it's all good.. but I just can't see a console ever being more powerful, or versatile than my PC (for my purposes)...

I'll give kudos to Wii though.. I had doubts, especially about the name, but the system adds many options that if I were to be game console shopping (we're talking about gaming, not wether my console can play a movie  ).. the Wii stands out as a console that I'd much prefer over the others...

I'll stick to my PC. The only console that I have is my Gameboy, and I don't know if that counts. Also, I've never really had to make any upgrades to my PC so far. I'm not sure what my dad has been doing, but I don't think that he's been adding any gaming parts to it. The only trouble I've had was when I first got BF. Some of the maps kept freezing. I downloaded the patch and everything's been fine.
