Hannibal
I'm looking for interesting movies to rent. Comedy, Drama whatever. But not your huge budget movies(seen 'em already). Smaller interesting movies. I've already added Brick to my list. I saw the preview and thought it might be good. Any suggestions?
Jae Onasi
Airplane and its sequels are really funny if you like wacky humor. The Naked Gun series is done by the same guys, so it's just as crazy. I liked "Much Ado About Nothing" with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson "The Birdcage" with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane was hilarious. "Dead Poets Society" was great. "White Nights" was good, and I'm not a dancer. I like "Tootsie" and "Stripes" and just about anything with either Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Dustin Hoffman, Denzel Washington, or Emma Thompson "Sneakers" was fun "All the President's Men", "Philadelphia," and "Out of Africa" were good dramas. "Rain Man" and "Kramer vs. Kramer" were terrific, too. A bit older stuff here, but well worth the rentals.
Mace MacLeod
Cube is a good no-budget horror/suspense flick, but avoid the lame sequel Hypercube. And don't see Cube Zero without seeing Cube first. 12 Monkeys or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are both solid cult classics, if you haven't already checked them out. Anything by the Coen brothers is worth checking out if you haven't seen them before--Fargo, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, etc. Waterworld wasn't actually as horrific as the press made it out to be, IMHO. Get Carter (Michael Caine version, avoid the Sly Stallone remake at all costs) is a classic. Withnail and I never gets any press, but it's freakin' hysterical. So is Shawn of the Dead, if you haven't seen either. Eraserhead is entertaining, provided you're on the same chemicals as the people who made it. Another in the same genre is Head. This is the movie the Monkees made (sorta). It's the free-form, drug-fuelled odessy the Beatles never got around to making. Also for the seriously stoned viewer only. If you're a big Beatles fan, you might enjoy Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, as the soundtrack is the only possible reason for its existence. Beware though, the sight of Donald Pleasance disco dancing, however unnerving you may find it, somehow fails to prepare the viewer for the full horror of hearing Frankie Howerd singing "When I'm 64" to a young woman named Strawberry Fields that he's hoping to seduce. Check out any of the Monty Python movies you may not have seen, and remember The Life of Brian was banned in Norway and marketed in Sweden as "The film so funny it was banned in Norway". Also, Mickey Mouse was banned in Romania in 1935 for fear he would frighten the children. How prescient the authorities were. I recommend anything directed by Stanley Kubrick (as you might guess from my avatar) but even I found Eyes Wide Shut to be a phenomenal bore. Also, anything directed by David Cronenberg of worth a watch. Just don't do it on a full stomache. And Naked Lunch really is totally incomprehensible if you don't do a lot of back reading on William S Burroughs, Joan Vollmer, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. mimartin
I have to agree with Jae Onasi on about every one of her picks except “White Knights.” It was good, just wasn’t my kind of thing, but it did remind me of another Gregory Hines movie that is very funny called “Running Scared” from 1986 with Billy Crystal and Jimmy Smits. I’d also recommend the following: (they are all way old, I had a college roommate that loved old movies and made me watch them. These are the best of those). 1. “Bringing up Baby” 1938 staring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant (B&W) (comedy) 2. “I Was A Male War Bride” 1949 staring Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan (B&W) (comedy) 3. “Paint You Wagon” 1969 staring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood (really funny, but a word of warning Clint Eastwood sings) (comedy) 4. “Fandango” 1985 staring Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson and Suzy Amis (comedy) 5. “Cat Ballou” 1965 staring Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda (comedy) 6. “Casablanca” 1942 staring Humphrey Bogard and Ingrid Bergman (classic) (B&W) Mace_Macleod pick of "Raising Arizona" should be at the top of any list if you have not seen it. Thanks, I need to head to video store to watch that one again.
milo
Waterworld wasn't actually as horrific as the press made it out to be, IMHO. It wasn't quite the epic adventure that they advertised it as either, though. Get Almost Heroes if you haven't seen it already. Matthew Perry's actually pretty funny in that movie. El Sitherino
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. If you've ever seen any of the 50's creature-horror b-movies, you'll love this movie's humor.
Jae Onasi
Heh, more B-movies-- Pod People, Hercules Unchained, Big Man on Campus, Cave Dwellers, and one of my favs, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Avoid Red Zone Cuba--not even MST3K could make that one funny. Other Katherine Hepburn movies:The African Queen, The Lion in Winter, and for comedy, Adam's Rib. Phantom Joker
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Oh, GAWD! I'd forgotten about that one... Tossing some personal favorites of mine out... Casino Royale Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it. Das Boot if you're in the mood for a good WWII drama. Blazing Saddles Anything (well, most anything) Mel Brooks does is good for several laughs.
Jeff
UHF. It's got Weird Al in it, it is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The basic plot is he takes over an old tv station and turns it into a hit with these crazy shows.
RedHawke
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are two of my pics... Flash Gordon dated and cheesy but cool. The Transporter if you are in the need for a little action. The Replacements is another good sports comedy. The Dirty Dozen is a great war movie, Where Eagles Dare, or Patton are good too. Lagaan: Once upon a time in India is a good musical/drama. If you are in the mood for a real classic... Forbidden Planet is good. Well other than repeating some of those already posted. Sadam
Check out Memento, Requiem for a Dream, and Neil Marshall's films: Dog Soldiers and the Descent. All well worth watching, all for different reasons......
Mace MacLeod
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are two of my pics... Oh, God yes. How could I forget those two? I rate Shaolin Soccer as being better then Kung Fu Hustle, but they're both keepers. Jackie Chan, move over. Stephen Chow is the new Hong Kong Kung Fu comedy master. Chopper. Keep your sense of black comedy ready for this one. And remember, the film has nothing on the guy it's based on. The stirring tale of Australia's most feared standover man. In RL, he killed something like 20 people but was only ever tried in court for one, and he got off. Still managed to spend most of his adult life behind bars, though. Beg to differ on one movie with someone: House of 1000 Corpses. Rob Zombie should stick to making CDs (all of which I own and listen to frequently). That movie was two hours out of my life that I'll never have back.

Sadam
Yeah, Orgazmo is good, but you need to see "Alferd Packer - Cannibal the musical" by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Hilarious, with songs.

Cygnus Q'ol
Snatch for sure! - Ghost Down Well, in that case, might as well throw in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Personal opinion, grab a copy of Resevoir Dogs. I don't know why, but I'm still stuck on the fight scenes in Troy. I turn on my DVD and it automatically forwards to the Mermadon landing when Achilles takes the temple of Apollo and the excellently choreographed Hector and Achilles battle. The hand to hand fight scenes in Chronicles of Riddick get a nod too.

Hannibal
Thanks everyone. A lot of these I've seen already. Like Snatch and Fandango(that was a nice suprise didn't think it was considered a comedy though). I'll check out Lock, Stock... I've got Kiss, Kiss Bang Bang on my Netflix queue. Gonna add Shawn of the Dead (it might already be on there). Got a couple of big budget movies listed by people. (Lethal Weapon, Independence Day?!?!) These come on TV and cable don't really need to rent it. Others I may check out: Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle, Blazing Saddles (seen parts but never whole thing), Dead Poet's Society (saw it in the theater but not since then), Tron (seen it but haven't seen it since early 90's), Swingers... Good list guys I'm going to check the profile on some of the others listed too. Like some of the other one's Mimartin listed. Thanks guys. Gotta make better use of this Netflix account. At one point I was getting 20 a month and I got flagged as an active user so they delayed my shipping and don't send me any new releases right away so I have to be creative. I'm nearing the end of my 3 year Netflix run.
Commander Obi-Wan
I have seen A New World? It's like a Pocahontas remake, but it's not animated. Plus, Christian Bale, Colin Farrell, and Christopher Plummer are in it.
ChAiNz.2da
I have seen A New World? It's like a Pocahontas remake, but it's not animated. Plus, Christian Bale, Colin Farrell, and Christopher Plummer are in it. ** DISCLAIMER ** this post is entirely my "opinion" ** DISCLAIMER ** Did you enjoy that movie? I thought it was horribly drawn out and the shooting style of the film really didn't fit with the theme of the movie... a waste of my life and bluntly (IMO) a horrible horrible movie.... Big name actors or no, that film blew.. I wouldn't wish that movie on my enemies to be honest, however please keep in mind I'm watching most movies from an "editor's point of view"... so my tastes and what I look for is probably way off from the "normal world".. hehehe No offense to the people that liked the film (my rage is aimed at the film itself), but I personally feel someone owes me some of my life back after watching it.. El Sitherino
The point of the movie was that it was a disjointed world they were living in. The films style represented it. And that movie ****ing owned. It's just a shame the music, while awesome, didn't fit with the movie too much.
