Cutting it close

1) What is the best swordfight you've ever seen in a movie?

...and why?

Was it the actors or the choreography or perhaps the weapon you liked most about it?

2) What is your favorite lightsaber battle out of the six movies?

...it seems to always change for me, but, right now it's:

Swordfight: Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu in (Kill Bill).

I loved the traditional Japanese feeling throughout the whole final scene.

Liu is hot and awesome. The music was appropriate as well. I want a Hatori!

Lightsaber Duel: Obi-wan and Annakin(Vader) in Episode 3.

What is there to say? What better way to climax than with a lightsaber duel.

I agree. The duel with Darth Maul was definitely the best lightsaber duel I've seen, simply because it flows swiftly and there are no fancy unnecessary moves (like that saber spinning just before the simultaneous Force Push in the Obi-Wan vs. Anakin duel in Ep. III) to make it look cooler, there are only necessary fancy moves that show what kind of fighter is Darth Maul.

1. Favorite sword fight--Westly and Inigo Montoya. Probably not the best technical fight, but certainly a lot of fun, and I'm a big Mandy Patinkin fan.

2. Best lightsaber duel--I'm with igy and miles--Maul vs. Qui-Gon and Obi-wan. It wasn't the double bladed lightsaber that did it for me, though. It was the sheer speed and dominating technique with which Maul attacks the 2 Jedi. The duel between Obi-wan and Anakin was great, don't get me wrong, but neither of them moved anywhere near as fast or with as good a technique as what I saw in the Maul fight. Maul/Ray Park _moved_ like he was born with a lightsaber in his hands. He didn't look like an actor who'd taken a few fencing lessons to get through the scene, he looked like someone who knew what the heck he was doing in battle. I didn't learn until later that he'd done a lot of martial arts, but when I read that I wasn't surprised in the least. I felt when I was watching the scene that the only reason Maul didn't win the fight was because the script said he couldn't win the fight--he dwarfed the other 2 actors in fighting skill.

Edit--@Cygnus--Jimbo and I were just discussing our favorite lightsaber duel just the other night. :D

1. I'll go with Jae on this one: the Princess Bride had the best swordplay of any movie I've seen. The cliff top duel was excellent.

2. Mace vs. Palpatine, with Maul vs. Obi-Wan + Qui-Gon in close second. Watching Palpatine fight for the first time was interesting. Even after he gets disarmed, the way the scene was build had captivating appeal, heightened by the way the music enhanced the mood.

Favorite Swordfight:

Difficult, I know there was a serious figth, but I forgot where. The best I've ever seen was a promo for Medieval Swordfighting or Medieval Martial Arts or something like that (nothing can match European Medieval Swords). Other than that, there's the funny stuff, like

King Arthur and the Black Knight (Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail)

Blinkin and the support/pole whatever (Robin Hood: Men in Tights)

Favorite Lightsaber duel:

Also difficult, at least the good ones are Anakin vs Obi-Wan, Dooku vs Yoda, Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and finally Palpatine vs Mace. Out of these it would either have to be Anakin or Palpy. Anakin because we've been waiting to see this ever since EP IV. Palpy because his saberskills came as a suprise to me. However it's all very close.

Favorite Swordfight:

Jet Li (sword) Vs. Donnie Yen (spear) in Hero, no contest. So fast and some of the moves they do are just insane. Plus it had great background music with the old man playing that instrument I cannot for the life of me think of the name.

Favorite Lightsaber Duel:

I agree completely with Jae on this one. Maul Vs. Quigon and Obi-wan is by far the best.

Q.F.E. to both Shem and Jae. ;)

The Princess Bride duel pwns all others!

2. Most of the prequel duels are very good and full of content, but the Luke Vs. Vader duel in the Throne Room on the Death Star still holds a place for me. Something about an untrained kid beating up on an expirienced cripple, while a laughing madman puppet-master looks on, still has an appeal to me. :p

Or perhaps Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan only acted bad 'cause the script said so. Maybe Park wasn't all he was cracked up to be, and Ewan/Liam were just acting bad.

[ON TOPIC]

Swordfight: I can't remember which fight it was in Hero, but Jet Li and the other dude were fighting in a court yard while some old guy played some instrument.

Lightsaber Fight: Yoda vs. The Emporer. Just 'cause Yoda kicks ass. :D

Well, since he came in 2nd in a world martial arts championship in '95, my guess would be that he's just damned good. I've sparred and have watched a lot of sparring. He'd eat me for lunch in about 3 seconds, and I have a black belt.

Good question. I don't watch many movies with sword fights... I'll have to get back to you on that ;).

Definitely the Darth Maul duel. It was the only prequel battle to not have oodles of pointless flourishing. Let's face it - Jedi and Sith aren't going to play ribbon-dancer with their sabers. They're going to try and hack each other's faces off.

Better not get on your bad side... I think that he (Park, not Maul) is a better fighter than Ewan/Liam but I always like to look on the other side of the road before I come to a conclusion. That makes people think I'm an indecisive person, and somewhat annoying because I never seem to agree with the "right" cause.

Best Sword fight:

Edmond Dantes vs Fernand Mondego in the Count of Monte Christo (2002).

Just watch it...you'll like it..

Best Lightsaber battle:

Yoda vs Emperor Palpatine

It just made Yoda one of the coolest SW characters ever. It makes his role in the 'old' movies so much more believable.

Here is some useless information, which people may think is interesting.

For the entire Highlander TV Series, Adrian Paul (Duncan) was taught about sword fighting by the person who taught Darth Vader. I cannot remember his name. However, Adrian's sword fighting teacher was involved with Episode IV, V, and VI. I am not sure if he returned for the prequals.

That would be the legendary Bob Anderson.

He has done sword training, stunts, choriography for everything from the Star Wars trilogy (including being lightsaber fighting Vader) to the Lord of the Rings to Highlander to Pirates of the Carribean, just to name a few. He originally taught Errol Flynn how to fight onscreen.

He did not return for the PT. That role was of course taken by Nick Gillard, who had also worked on the original films.

Best Sword Fight: Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) and The Kurgan (Clancy Brown) in the 1986 movie “Highlander.” “The Princess Bride” would be right there with it.

Best Lightsaber: I am going to go with the Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Count Dooku fight from “Attack of the Clones.” Mainly because in was the first time we saw Yoda fight.
