tk102
Here's a short 13 question quiz that will label your accent. http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have I am 96% "The West" Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta. (also 95% "Midland")
Jae Onasi
Midland North. You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop." Hehe, given that I'm from Wisconsin.... I do use the term 'pop', but only because when I used 'soda' around some IN relatives, they joked about wanting to hand me a box of baking soda. So it's been 'pop' ever since. Mr Roboto
I didn't get a percent, but it was almost 100% "The West." I guess Jae Onasi is a weirdo.
Pavlos
I'm from the UK but I took it anyway - I'm not being left out of a poll! Apparently my accent is closest to a North Eastern one but I'm fairly certain I don't sound anything like I come from New York. It should work for British people too, dammit! After all, the UK is minime to the USA. Although, perhaps it's more accurate to say that the USA is the UK's little brother... only much larger... and more successful... tk102
@Mr. Roboto: The percent is buried in that little code window they give you next to the graph. @Pavlos: I was wondering how non-U.S. accents would rate! Chalk one up to Northeast!
Jae Onasi
I didn't get a percent, but it was almost 100% "The West." I guess Jae Onasi is a weirdo. You wouldn't be the first to call me weird, but any of us who stay here more than 4 posts probably fall in the same category. I bet you don't pronounce 'Wisconsin' correctly, either. Achilles
Your Result: North Central "North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot. Which is a load of crap cuz I've seen Fargo and those people sound like loonies . Also, I was born and raised in Arizona. EDIT:this test gave me a different result: Western Western is kind of neutral, but not quite since it's still possible to tell where you're from. So you might not actually be from the West (but you probably are). If you really want to sound "neutral," learn how to say "stock" and "stalk" differently. mimartin
I guess Jae Onasi is a weirdo. Jae being from that neck of the woods does not make her weird (trying to get my southern boy accent back). However me getting The Inland North (88%) and spending my entire life in Texas is a bit strange. And No, I have never used the word soda or pop to order a soft drink. If I called a Dr. Pepper a pop around here they would string me up. Oh well at least the South came in a distant second. EDIT:this test gave me a different result: Thanks Achilles now I feel even worst. Now I'm a Yankee getting Northeastern. No more test I can’t take this anymore. I’m starting to want to forgo my opening college football weekend and go to a off Broadway musical.
Diego Varen
Like Pavlos, I'm from the UK and I couldn't resist taking this test. I'm would be from the Northeast, if I was American and Northcentral, being the least. Nice quiz. Edit: Damn, I accidentally voted Northcentral. Is it possible to change my vote? Jeff
I got the Inland North, which is pretty accurate since I've lived in Michigan most of my life. I always say pop lol, I don't think I've ever called it soda.
tk102
@Topsite: an Admin might be able to tweak it. I can't well I forced another vote into NE but it's not tied to your name. (but stoffe is still correct.) Btw, I'd be interested to see what kind of UK or Australian accent I have if anyone finds a quiz for that.
stoffe
Though I'm not American or even a native English speaker I took the test anyway, and got: The Northeast (Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.) Edit: Damn, I accidentally voted Northcentral. Is it possible to change my vote? No, it cannot be changed. You will now forever be labeled as having Northcentral accent.
Darth333
Edit: Damn, I accidentally voted Northcentral. Is it possible to change my vote? Done My native language is French but I took the test for fun Here is the result: The Northeast Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak. stoffe
Done My native language is French but I took the test for fun Here is the result: The Northeast Seems like most non-Americans so far end up in the The Northeast category. Is it more similar to British English than other American accents?
tk102
You outlanders must be getting all your Americanization from NYC.

ChAiNz.2da
WTH? You see... this is why I never trust polls Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. I'm from Michigan, and now live in the South (Tennessee)... so I guess that cancels each other out EDIT: Achilles' Test: What American accent do you have? (Best version so far) My Results: Neutral You're not Northern, Southern, or Western, you're just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don't really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up. 2 for 2... huh, guess I "blend" well with the peeps
adamqd
Maybe they are watching too many Seinfeld reruns. King of Queens! I'm also from the uk and got the New york North jersey one, I think a lot of people are losing accents now, soon enough everyone will be talking with an American accent.... Emperor Devon
You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop." Bah, the rest of America just doesn't speak English properly. There is a difference between "cot" and "caught," I tell you... (And pop? Where on earth did they get that?) Edit: Damn, I accidentally voted Northcentral. Is it possible to change my vote? It's irreversible, it's irreconcilable! Doom! Doom! Doom! Dooom!! Pretty accurate, since I was born and raised in New York. ;o
SykoRevan
I got Philly! So far, I'm the only one, too. Personally, I'd classify my accent as "ghetto," but that wasn't an option, and besides, Philly is probably as close to ghetto as you can get in this poll anyway. Your accent is as Philadelphian as a cheesesteak! If you're not from Philadelphia, then you're from someplace near there like south Jersey, Baltimore, or Wilmington. if you've ever journeyed to some far off place where people don't know that Philly has an accent, someone may have thought you talked a little weird even though they didn't have a clue what accent it was they heard. Bob Lion54
My Results: Southern People used to hate Southern accents but now everyone wants one. Louisiana boy, through and through here! I didn't know that "People used to hate Southern accents but now everyone wants one." I feel cool now! Downright groovy, even! I guess I have a pretty generic "Southern accent" because I grew up in a city, but some of my family sound exactly like this guy - Now thats a real Cajun accent, cher! In fact, he sounds exactly like one of my uncles. EDIT: Opps... looks like I did Achilles' quiz. Ah well, same result either way but I got a groovy map!
