Crying Trekkies?

Looking through the hundreds of comments about the trailer here at TrekMovie.com, you can see that quite a few of the fans were literally brought to tears by the new trailer. The moment Kirk takes the chair or Nero talking about Kirk “being a great man” seem to be particularly emotional. This kind of thing combined with the media comments above indicate how this film may deliver on JJ Abrams’ promise of bringing two kinds of movie, one for the fans, and one for everyone else. If these kinds of emotional outbursts are going to be common, then Paramount and CBS may want to partner with Kleenex for a some (travel sized) Trek branded facial tissues for fans to bring with them to theaters in May.

I'm guilty. All I have to say is WOW! :D

A very impressive trailer, to be sure. I do believe that my curiosity will drag me to see it - either on opening night or soon after. Thanks for sharing Yar-El!

Looks like a few Academy scenes have been made - that ought to be interesting.

Yes! Origin story! I hope we will see how Kirk cheats at the Kobayashi Maru scenario! Always loved that piece of story in Wrath of Kahn!

Im sure the trailer alone has more action that alot of Trek fans can bear :D JJ has always said that he wanted to give this Trek an action/epic 'Star War's vibe. It looks like he's having a good go at it ;)

I hope the movie does well and we get a new Trek series somewhere along the line. The 'reboot' can work as a kickstart, and as a feature length film, but you couldn't have a series based on this movie's premise and characters, surely?

Should definitely bring in the fans and get the fanboys complaining.

Any hint of the awful JJprise does that. And the uniforms. And the bridge, the setting, lack of Capt. Pike...

Sorry about that...:xp: I still hate the ship and whatnot, but the film looks good!

  • 3 weeks later...

No! I have absolutely no interest in yet ANOTHER original series-based movie!

The reason that Enterprise did so poorly was because it took a step BACK in time... not forward. The original series no longer should be associated as Star Trek because it is looking into the past, not the future.

Trailer would have been great if it were for a twenty fourth century Trek or later, but it was terrible because it tries to keep an ancient series looking like new when a new series should simply replace it.

...and not content with that, sees fit to mess about with it. :swear:

*curses JJPrise*

Something Post-Nemesis, post Dominion War would be nice. Or, I would have been glad to see a TNG movie taking a slight step back, showing the Enterprise in the Dominion War. That was an opportunity for some great movies, I think, that just passed by...DS9 on the big screen would have been something...:(

This film is constantly sending mixed messages - one moment it looks good, the next, it looks terrible. Example of this:

That's what the phasers look like? Who the hell designed them? And why must everything be covered in Chrome?

The reason Enterprise did so poorly was because it was crap. The period had great potential. The problem was that it tried to rewrite everything else, and the temporal cold war was just terrible.

It definately picked up in the fourth season (aside from the stupid Romulan episodes), when they did away with all that crap, largely replaced Brannon and Braga, and got Manny Coto in. Hell, I was looking forward to Shran becoming a regular in season 5.

How about we replace the Original Star Wars films? Or replace the Eiffel Tower, with something 'new', then?

The Original Series, while lacking by today's standards, was perfect back in the sixties - with it's parallels to the Cold War, the racially (and gender) diverse crew and a ton of other things.

It may not look so good by today's standards, whether it be advances in set design, make-up and CGI, or compared with the multi-faceted story-telling that's now expected in Sci-Fi, but just because it's 'old' is no reason at all for it to be replaced.

showing the Enterprise in the Dominion War.

She was off fighting the Gorn at one point, I believe.

With all due respect, when technology today surpasses what you see in the original series, there is absolutely no point in trying to pretend that it is still the past for DS9 and TNG. Those series are independent of the original to me.

If you would happen to notice how so much of the Original Series is the same. The Defiant in 'Enterprise' was identical to the ship in the original series, but given a few things to spiff it up. Instead of fooling with it at all, they should have designed a completely new Constitution class ship and say that was the revised version of the Enterprise from the original series. Instead of taking a cheap-ass phaser and adding chrome to it, just come up with a new design that does not correspond to the original series at all.

When you try to take something old but dress it up as something new, you detract from it in all ways. The new movie is an abomination for those who like either the classic, or the modern look of Star Trek.

Fine, but that's still no reason for it to be replaced, or forgotten.

In a Mirror Darkly was intended as a direct homage to The Original Series episode 'The Tholian Web' - where you see the USS Defiant on screen.

Replacing it with something 'new' would not have worked seeing as it's already been seen.

I agree with you on that point - I'm not overjoyed about the direction this movie seems to be taking, but I will wait till it's out before making a final judgement.

Why?!

A part of me hopes the movie is a colossal failure, but I would rather have seen a successful movie that takes place shortly after or around Voyager's end. Maybe not the same crews we came to love, but original characters and original ships would add some room for character development in the course of a movie.

If this thing flies, it will just encourage more of the same, but with high-tech-classic styled junk that can't break with tradition of the original series. Original series is in the past, not the future!

The film is set before the original series, though. It's exploring the back story/origins of Star Trek's most famous characters.

I've found that it helps to look at as a parallel of Battlestar Galactica - You've got the established canon, that has a strong following (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) - The Original Series of Battlestar Galactica.

But now, Paramount want to try and breath fresh life into it, and expand to a larger audience, by rebranding and redesigning, radically, the brand. - The RDM version of BSG.

Now, of course, this isn't without it's problems. The hardcore fans of the Original shows are going to get bent out of shape over this - screaming 'Blasphemy!' and a ton of other things.

Look on it as separate to the established Star Trek continuity. It's not going to destroy the ones you like - hell, you may even like it.

None of us can be certain until it's released.

That's what it comes down to, isn't it? Can't judge this, can't judge TOR until they're released.

I'm not for trashing the original series, but for having a Star Trek timeline sort of progressing as our vision of the future improves. Chrome plated phaser pistols and the Romulan ship from 'Enterprise' look more futuristic than from the original series, but when you have to make them fit the era, that means you can't progress your 'vision of the future' because there's already one that takes place after the new movie.

It would make more sense to just assume the 'already obsolete' technology from the first year of TNG just improved as you moved to DS9, then to Voyager. The next logical step would be to go from that period on. That way, anything more sophisticated would just advance from one series to the next. Like each year we in the 21st century advance would correspond to what we expect 300 years from now.

Might have made more sense to begin hyping the era in which Star Trek: Online is to be set, at the turn of the 25th century. Leave behind Brent Spiner's concerns about Data getting older, the ruined career continuity of Worf, and LEAVE THE CLASSIC ALONE!

I really wish they had left the Enterprise alone. However, it makes a great target in Bridge Commander! :D

I will, of course, see it at some point - but all the way through I'll be muttering 'alternate timeline' to myself...
