Environmental Aliens?

Seriously? :raise:

Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civilisations, say scientists

To bolster humanity's chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals into space, and in particular warn against broadcasting information about our biological make-up, which could be used to manufacture weapons that target humans. Instead, any contact with ETs should be limited to mathematical discourse "until we have a better idea of the type of ETI we are dealing with."

The authors warn that extraterrestrials may be wary of civilisations that expand very rapidly, as these may be prone to destroy other life as they grow, just as humans have pushed species to extinction on Earth. In the most extreme scenario, aliens might choose to destroy humanity to protect other civilisations.

"A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilisation may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand. Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilisational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, via greenhouse gas emissions," the report states.

"Green" aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets," the authors write.

Eco Aliens...well that's a new one, didn't see that coming. :dozey:

Not worried about Aliens, mankind will destroy itself long before Aliens get a chance. It is just human nature.

Yeah I have hard time believing in Aliens myself, let alone worrying about them taking us out, but as far as mankind destroying itself, I think we might go the way of the dinosaurs instead. You know...asteroids, supervolcanoes, virus, a combination of those kind of natural clamities could cause human extinction at anytime before mankind does the job himself.

Unfortunately, this. The London Riots (Which eventually became ENGLAND Riots) sorta proved this.

Naw, we'd never totally destroy ourselves that way, we'd never get anywhere doing it like that, like Einstein said:

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." -Albert Einstein

So the cycle of physical conflicts would just repeat, until someone came out as the final winner still alive to claim the victory.

A few years ago I would have agreed with you, but today I see supposedly intelligent people shoot themselves in the foot just to make sure the next guy does not win. It use to be people played to win, now it seems just as important to keep the other guy from winning.

Plus global warming is a myth. I write as I enjoy the record 19th straight day of 100 F or above.

Damn! Your right, I keep forgetting about the ones who commit suicidal (I'ma gonna blow you, me, and everyone else, straight to hell.) attacks. :raise: They've changed rules, haven't they.

I mean you can't call a "time-out...no fair" when that happens.

The Guardian are obviously trolling. That, or they're willing to print crap until the next big hacking story comes along.

No they didn't. The day our government starts gassing its cities and cleansing minorities, then you can say that.

Personally, i find this search for aliens in order to solve humanity's problems somewhat silly. Even if we did find benevolent, advanced aliens that let us reverse engineer their technology, given we'd make life a bit easier, but we'd also simply develop more efficient ways to oppress and kill each other. (see: 5000 years of recorded history)

Shyamalan twist:

we were the aliens all along

This.

What so you believe we're all alone in the universe?

Giorgio A. Tsoukalos must disagree with you!

Word.

Don't have it. It isn't wise to upset a purifier--I should know, he is a distant tribal relative of mine! :xp:

I've been unsure what to make of them but I began to gather as much. I almost made the mistake of going into broadcasting myself. Gotta keep it moving somehow in those slow times.

<snip> given we'd make life a bit easier, but we'd also simply develop more efficient ways to oppress and kill each other. (see: 5000 years of recorded history)

Or we'd just find fancier ways to waste time with the help of technology as opposed to actually advancing the human race. ;)

Agreed on both counts. The guardian should know better than to put that sort of speculation and tripe up, and the London riots didn't 'prove' ****.

This assertion relies on a number of truly staggering assumptions - that an race alien would care about environmental damage to someone else's planet and that such a race would by virtue of existing be any better in that regard, for starters.
