Am I the only one...

...disillusioned by the sordid state of the gaming industry?

Am I the only one who is spending less and less time gaming than I ever used to?

Am I the only one who just doesn't get as excited by games any more?

Am I the only one who doesn't always finish games and runs out of steam, or loses interest half way through?

Am I the only one who longs for the days of Transport Tycoon, Doom, Total Annihilation, Jedi Knight, System Shock 2 and other great games?

Am I the only one who thinks the gaming industry has lost something in the last few years, as games have become more streamlined - designed to appeal to the mass market, and not just people who look for a little more in their games?

Is it really just me, or are there others out there? I remember being able to get totally lost in a game - and actually really wanting to play a game. The last game I played that was "un-put-downable" was Splinter Cell - but that really was rare (I gave up half way through the sequel, as it just didn't grab me). With both Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, I never finished them in one run through - I just lost interest, and came back to them later. Maybe it's that I don't have as much time as I used to - but if I'm playing a really good game, I make time for it. Even Doom 3, a game I was really looking forward to, just didn't grab me by the balls and beg me to play it night after night - don't get me wrong, I really enjoy it, but there's just something missing...

I think the games world needs to be injected with a large dose of originality, or I'll just lose interest completely. I am looking forward to Half-Life 2 - but it'll need to be extremely good for me to want to play it every waking moment.

Maybe my expectations are too high, but 5-10 years ago I enjoyed playing games far more than I do today - there was a real sense of addiction and absorbtion; you just don't get that anymore.

Does anybody else agree with me?

I know what you mean.

Games have been getting blander for me as well. I get bored of them very quickly, and try and sell or exchange them maybe a week after I buy them.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just "growing out" of games. I hope not. It would totally ruin my "Gamer 4 Life" tattoo...

I still play Total Annihilation though. Greatest RTS ever made.

Well, they are getting a lot easier, AND I don't have much money to buy games that seem good (Tony Hawk Underground II.... hell, I still haven't even gotten City of Heroes. :()

You're not the only one.

A few months ago I completely lost interest in all of the games sitting on my gaming shelf. And I mean there aren't that many games on that shelf that I wouldn't normally want to play.

I didn't touch a game at all for two months. Come to that - I didn't post much on any forums either.

I played the Doom demo when it was released, and found it a bit dull. I haven't got the game - and I'm not sure I will. I didn't rush out to get Battlefront as I had originally planned - and I still can't work up enthusiasm to go and buy it.

I preordered Half Life 2 - but right now, I'm not excited about that game either.

Perhaps I reached a threshold of gaming, and now it really doesn't matter if I complete the next game on the horizon. I know I went through a brief period where I played too many games, and at the end sat back and thought "What the hell am I doing?"

Since then, of course, I got back into playing some games, and completed Neverwinter Nights and it's expansions. My gaming wishlist has shrunk, and there are only a few games I'm looking forward to. Maybe I'm just getting jaded, or lethargic - or old. ;P

Describe "life"

I agree with you completely The_One, almost as if you were speaking directly to me.

not enough originality anymore. :(

though...i still buy and play games...it takes me forever now to beat them though. prolly cause I've got too many, i get bored w/it so i move on to the next one...it took me forever to beat jedi academy...and what i got was a huge disappointing crap ending after i suffered through the crap storyline...that made me want to rip the dvd out of the xbox and chuck it against the wall for lack of originality.

games i have palyed that totally kicked my ass:

Star Wars Rebellion (didn't realize how late i stayed up playing it one night)

Star Wars Force Commander

Jedi Knight

Mysteries of the Sith (many times)

Unreal Tournament

TIE Fighter

Morrowind

KotOR

Full Spectrum Warrior

Fable (too short though, but it's fun and makes time go by fast)

i get bored with games...its better to want the games then to actually own them..in my mind it is..last year i asked for a Game Cube and ive only played it about 15 or so times..

i got mad excited for KOTOR, that when i bought it, it was fun for a few days..then i lost interest in it and i havent beat it yet...

as for the first half life...i havent even gotten close to finishing that game...come to think of it none of my friends have beaten it..or anyone i know of...has anyone of you swampies beaten it?

so i think it is better to want the game then to have the game....

and i too have also lost a little bit more interest in the gaming world....

The_One:

I noticed that in your post you seem to favor the Single Player modes of games (correct me if I'm wrong!). Perhaps that's the problem; more and more emphasis is placed on multiplayer nowadays, with single player often taking the back seat.

Back in the early '90's, online multiplayer was almost unheard of. Oh sure, you could hook up a LAN connection and play a match or two with a friend on the two or three PC games that supported any multiplayer at all, but back in those days, the ultimate "multiplayer" experience was playing two player Battle mode on Super Mario Kart on a split screen. As a result, more emphasis was placed on creating good stories and endearing characters, since a game's success or failure relied almost entirely on whether single player was good or not.

Within a decade, however, that all changed with widespread public access to the internet. With an ever growing number of people online, the clamor for online gaming grew. After all, even the best enemy AI isn't as unpredictable, innovative and resourceful as human opponents. As a result, more emphasis was given to such things as balanced MP maps, and server options. Unfortunately, elements that made a good story has become a casualty of this. Of course there are exceptions (Halo, Jedi Outcast), but the vast majority of games can be safely classified as shallow shoot-fests. If I recall, Quake 3 Arena had no storyline whatsoever, yet it was (and still is) a very popular game. Don't get me wrong, these games are fun to play, but they don't "grab" you like single player games of old have done.

I suppose it all boils down to personal taste. Personally, I like both engaging single player and mindless multiplayer modes depending on my mood. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play Halo 2...the single player mode. ;)

Bring back the 8 bit!

*petitions*

I have no clue what you're talking about. Each game I play has a good storyline and grand gameplay. (not including movie-game translations)

I will agree though, some of these games are far too easy.

JK2 kicked my arse. I will give it credits for that. And Kingdom Hearts was pretty difficult...
