Sony as evil as Microsoft?

I'd say Sony is more evil than Microsoft and have been for some time, since they shipped rootkits on some of their CDs earlier that silently installed themselves when the CDs were used in a computer, something that Microsoft hasn't done (yet) as far as I know. Fortunately they were brought to task about that (otherwise there is a tendency that behavior that's clearly illegal when people do it is "just business" when companies do it).

As for this particular link I believe Sony and Microsoft are equally into spreading disinformation to make their own overpriced products look better, Microsoft just has more experience doing it, so they aren't quite as blantant in their efforts. :)

Ooh good one stoffe.

But one could argue Microsoft Genuine Advantage (a critical update!) is in the same vein. (Article: Big Microsoft Brother)

I think MS Genuine Advantage is silly, pointless and a waste of effort and resources (like most copy protection schemes are: penalizing paying customers while the warez people have easily removed the protection), but it's hardly in the same class of "evil" as a rootkit. It doesn't install itself silently without telling the user, it doesn't hide its presence on the computer, and it doesn't bypass normal functioning of the operating system.

At any rate, I'd hope most consumers are informed enough to not blindly trust a "fact sheet" released by a company that claims things about competing products by other companies. It's not like they have anything to gain from being impartial or objective. :)

It's not that it installs itself silently (though if you have automatic updates turned on, you might easily overlook it...), it's the fact that your PC is reporting back to MS on a regular basis. It doesn't need to bypass the operating system -- it is the operating system. :D

But I agree, the rootkit move was completely underhanded and shady. Microsoft prefers to be more overt about its tactics.

Sony isn't evil in my opinion. Neither is Microsoft. Just Nintendo. They are spoilt.

I don't want to sound fanboy-ish, but Nintendo is the company with the longest gaming history etc. They practically invented half of all the console features we consider normal now.

I don't consider them evil...unless Mario starts spreading Communist propaganda or something :xp:

@ Topiczor:

Microsoft=Evil...

I recall a press-release in 1999/2000 (or something like that) in which Bill Gates stated that the Dreamcast was a wonder of technology...

After which he created his own console. That's just lame..

Plus: I don't like the idea of all Windows-stuff linked together..the PC, Mobile Phone and console...it just get's to 'Big brother-ish.'

Sony haven't started suing children yet...

They've bitched about their competitors. So what? That's marketing for you. Academics do it all the time...I've yet to hear someone call academe evil...Annoying, yes, but not evil...

Microsoft's WGA, on the other hand, is extremely worrying. It's not because I have illegal software- I don't. It's just that I don't like being watched like this. Who do Microsoft think they are to come invading my privacy for their own cupidity.

And they don't need to make the Wii look stupid - look at the name! :xp:

I don’t know about evil, but they’re all greedy as hell. After all they’re corporations and the only goal of any corporation is to make money for its stock holders by increasing the stock price (hopefully without the CEO getting indicted). With all the double talk and half truths by this society and its leaders they probably don’t see anything wrong with their little “fact sheet.”

We hear Microsoft ain't too happy about this chart either and is preparing certain legal action, namely because it could be misleading to otherwise unwitting retail employees selling customers game consoles this holiday season.

This line earns Microsoft +5 LS points.

I just don't care what Sony does anymore, it's the only console this generation that holds absolutely no interest for me.

Hey, Sony has got to do SOMETHING to counteract the consistent production of bad news that has personified the PS3 thus far.

All the various media outlets reported how Sony's next-gen console would cost USD$600 but Sony has CLEARLY shown that all the reports were wrong and it will ONLY cost USD$500 while the EVIL Microsoft Xbox360 Core System would cost almost USD$700, heh-heh-heh. :smirk2:

Anyone notice how Sony doesn't bother to compare the 60 GB PS3 with the Xbox 360 Platinum? :dozey:

You know, there is a reason why after working for 3 different companies I haven't met a person in any marketing department that I felt like I could trust. :indif:

well, looks like more fuel for my "DOWN WITH THE PS3!" campaign. XD

in this whole next gen war, Sony just keeps putting their feet further and further into their mouths. i seriously hope their enjoying the taste of their Italian Leather because that's about the only good thing coming out of their PS3 campaign.

this is how i currently view the next gen scene: PC's w/ DX10 > Wii >>> XBox 360 >>>>> PS3.
