I got fired today...heavy

Let me draw the situation:

I've been a dispensing assistant at an opticians here in Scotland for about 6 months now, and I was really enjoying it, helping people choosing their glasses, making sure they get the right prescription and the right lenses for that prescription, etc, etc...

Now everything's been going fine, I never had any complaints about my work apart from an absence or two at the start of my employment and the fact that a manager pulled me aside to say I was a bit blunt with one of my colleagues.

Now you have to imagine the environment it is, we have a clinical side of it which is the eye examination, but you also have the retail side of it which is dispensing glasses...Because it is a shop environment with a lot of different roles it keeps you on your toes, now I have been trained to provide nothing less than excellent customer service, which I have always done IMO

The reason for my "dismissal" is apparently the fact that I allegedly said something to one of my colleagues to upset them in a professional way, and I have also been told it wasn't my place to tell other members of staff what to do since it wasn't my place...So let me get this straight: I get fired because I upset someone when I was only trying to do my job?

I never told anyone what to do all I did was request from some members of staff to assist me or customers who are always waiting in our shop, as a team member, you would think it is doable to do so don't you?

The director refused to tell me which member of staff was upset with me or why, even after I offered an apology towards that member of staff.

Now this all happened in one day:

The assistant manager told me I had upset some people with the way I requested help sometimes, I was like "OK fair enough, I'll watch what I'm saying around these people then, no biggy"

But then later on today, the director pulled me aside, repeated what the ass manager had already said, and added that she thought it wasn't working out with the rest of the team, and she feels it necessary to terminate my employment, that goddamn instant!

No (official) verbal warning, no written warning, no disciplinary action, nothing!

Just goodbye, after I worked my ass of for this place and never missed a day, even an hour, in the last three months!

And this isn't even the fun of it yet...Just that same morning we got announced that the director's daughter, who was working there part-time so far, will now be working their full time towards a dispensing qualification, which is what I was doing, and I was nearly finished as well.

There goes what little faith in humanity I had left...Needless to day, I'm taking this matter into further legal action, even to court if I must, I've got nothing to lose, these bastards just ****ed me over with a rusty spoon, but I'm gonna go at them with everything I have and get everything I can...

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far.

You know what, I read this and the first thing that comes to my mind is - you are better off not being in a place where people are that damn sensitive. Perhaps I read into it wrong, but that's what I'm getting out of it. At my job thick skin is a must or else you won't make it.

Never the less, yes I would say you did get screwed over and I hope things work out for you if it does end up in court.

My thoughts exactly...

Wat hurts the most is this:

I have never refused to help any of my colleagues or been mad at them for asking me to do something, whether you've been there 6 months or 6 years, it doesn't matter, everyone is supposed to be part of the same team, and I have always fulfilled that part...Never have I taken anything personal hat was said in the workplace or in the middle of a lunch hour rush, ever...But yet they are willing to stab me in the back like that? At least have the decency to come up to me and say it to me.

But I feel it's all just a lame excuse from the director to get her daughter in my place.

Perhaps its your destininy not to become an Dispencing Assitant, but perhaps something even greater;

For example; you might get a part-time job at a Cheese Sandwich Factory while your on your way to becoming an Animator. But once that all doesn't work out, you move back to your parents basement where you doodle up more drawings, working up for your dream career. Once that's over with, you get a million dollars for your drawings and blow it all on jewels, a helicopter ride and a recontruction of your parents house (by demolishing everything except for the Parents bedroom, where your dad may be sleeping after being sedated, and the ensuit.) Next your dad wakes up to find himself in whats left of his house in Pakistan, because you thought you could "sew some soccer balls together" with your dad.

No? hmmm...

1: Buy a digital audio recorder.

2: Take it with you to work every day and conceal it on your person.

3: Record every conversation that you have with collegues, supervisors, customers, everyone.

4: If this happens again, you will have all you need to SUE THE SH!T OUT OF THEM!!!

5: I also recommend this tactic for every psychotherapy patient as well.

6: This tactic has made me a LOT of money.;) Structured settlements suck, though.:(

7: There should be a hefty fee for screwing people over. MAKE THE BASTARDS PAY IT!

Well, that sucks. Hopefully you can find a different optical to work at. You can choose to be bitter about it (and I don't blame you since this is very upsetting), or you can chalk it up to life being sucky sometimes (and it is), appreciate what you have learned from them (good and bad), and take that experience to a hopefully more understanding new employer. The timing of the termination with the daughter being promoted to full-time makes me wonder. You'll need to have all your paperwork ducks in a row for legal action, and it's going to be darn hard to prove and may take a lot of time, so be prepared for that.

When one door closes, another usually opens--hopefully something even better comes your way soon. :)

That sucks, i would be annoyed if I got fired at my job, as i like the people i work with, the work isn't that bad (always stuff to do to keep me from bored repeatable crap) that is hard to come by...and i've been through about 3-4 jobs...

p.s. everything jae said is true lol

Ouch. Man, that's really bad of them. Good luck on finding a better job and on the whole process that is going to take. In the meanwhile, Qliveur's tactic seems to be the best. xD Also, if you run onto one of your old co-workers, don't talk to them or anything because those people can twist it in a way they make the judge believe you intimidated them onto doing something against their will.

I really hope so...I'm gonna get some legal advice tomorrow to see what my options are and what chances I have.

In the meantime I'll just look for something else...

While vengeance is very tempting, avoid it. You never know when it might come back to bite you in the butt. Also, it's wise never to burn bridges. Your co-workers theoretically didn't have anything to do with this--don't take it out on them.

Vengeance is what needs to be done, BUT!!

Please identify your target of your revenge, it would be bad to burn those who is not responsable for an event. And yes, do mind those (relatively) poor folks caught at the crossfire.

I always hate it when something bad happens to someone with no justified reason. You being fired really sucks. I don't know and it doesn't really matter whether your employer was right or not - you offered a sincere apology and they still sacked you. In my opinion there's nothing else you could have done (except possibly beg, but I doubt that's your style) to keep your job. The most important thing is that, if you think you've been wronged, you get your legal justice, so I truly hope your lawsuit works out for you and, what's more important, I hope it won't take you too long to find another, more satisfying job.

I know I wouldn't, because I'm too nice sometimes, but I hope you can give them what they deserve.

About six years ago, my parents, my brother and I were thrown out of our house by the landowner because his daughter was moving out of her parents' and she sought a house for her own. At least he told us flat out why we were being thrown out, but it was very frustrating nonetheless. Getting only six months to find a new house was even more so. I know it's not the same, but I can feel your frustration and anger.

Give 'em hell, and good luck finding something new.

Let me reiterate:

1: Buy a digital audio recorder.

2: Have a pleasant, non-confrontational conversation with each and every one of your former co-workers (away from their workplace, of course) about their viewpoint on what happened, and record the conversations.

3: Proceed with the lawsuit, call your co-workers as witnesses (subpoena them if you have to) and if their testimonies differ from what they said in your conversations with them you can use the recordings to nail their asses to the wall for perjury.

4: An alternative is to use the recordings to force them to tell the truth on the stand before they testify.

5: If they are terminated for testifying on your behalf, they can also sue your employer, costing them even more money and possibly putting them out of business (pricks like that don't deserve to be in business anyway).

6: They're @$$holes. Take them down. They deserve it.;)

Taping conversations without someone's consent may not be legal. You would need to consult someone for legal advice on that.
