Favorite Bible Verses

No, this is not a debate thread or a Christianity vs Athiesm thread. We have enough of those. This is simply a thread to air your favorite Bible verses. Hopefully this topic should be approachable by Christians and non-Christians alike! We'll need some ground rules though, I think:

 • No debate, no hostilities, no stupidity. If you want to talk about someone's choices that's fine, but don't argue about theism.
 • If you're going to post funny/silly verses, try to do it in a way that doesn't insult Christians.
 • Respectively, Christians, avoid verses that may offend athiests or non-Christians.
 • Explain a little as to why they're your favorite verses/sections. No novel required, but a little blurb or explanation would be nice.
 • Did I already say no debate?

So let's get on with it. I picked out some of my favorite proverbs.

How long will you lie there, O lazybones? When will you rise from your sleep?
I feel a personal connection to this proverb. Er, what time is it? >.>

Better is a dinner of vegetables where love is than a fatted ox and hatred with it.
I personally happen to like vegetables, but I find it ironic that even back in the early days of Christianity they still had to find clever ways to get kids to eat vegetables.

Grey hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.
Ought to make Jae feel better (just kidding!). I wonder about all those non-righteous with grey hair though...?

Better to meet a she-bear robbed of its cubs than to confront a fool immersed in folly.
Better to be eaten apparently. :xp:

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, who will only despise the wisdom of your words.
I find this one particularly enlightening around here sometimes...

Do not withhold discipline from your children; if you beat them with a rod, they will not die.
Let us all make a note that the Bible advocates beating your children. Please contact your congressman ASAP.

And unfortunately I found this one at the end of my search through Proverbs:

The legs of a disabled person hang limp; so does a proverb in the mouth of a fool.

:( :( :(

I'll end with my favorite psalm. I know, I'm not creative on this one:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths

for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,

I fear no evil;

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff--

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

all the days of my life

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

my whole life long.

So break out your bibles and have some fun with this. And don't go for the jugular please. :)

8: And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9: And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10: And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12: And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

I have had these verses memorized for years! It is my favorite part in A Charlie Brown Christmas, Linus had quoted these same verses.

13: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14: Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15: And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16: Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17: And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

I have always been fond of these verses. Gives me encouragement!

Several serious meant attempts to read the bible ended one page after the page I started at, at best.

However, I like this one:

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

Good idea, Inyrikins!

I love proverbs. Here are a few others:

Do not judge, lest you be judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Or something to that extent.

Love never fails.

J7 likes this one too.

For love is as strong as death,

Jealousy as cruel as the grave;

Its flames are flames of fire,

A most vehement flame.

7 Many waters cannot quench love,

Nor can the floods drown it.

If a man would give for love

All the wealth of his house,

It would be utterly despised.

They're the ones I can think of off the top of my head, but maybe later I'll get out my bible. I know I have a few others highlighted.

Then said Jesus, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do ...

This line... has always had a very strong impression on my mind. I don't know why or where I found application to it, but it's just one of the strongest.

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned, forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.

Another of my favourites, partly because it seems to echo Karma so perfectly. In a way, this one is perfect, of a sort.

The Lord is my light and my salvation -

Whom shall i fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life -

Of whom shall I be afraid?

When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh,

When my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.

Though an army besiege me,

My heart will not fear;

Though war break out against me,

Even then will I be confident.

Just an amazing verse to show God's power

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not seve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.

I especially like the "O Nebuchadnezzar" part, but it really shows their devotion in those times.

He who spares the rod hates his son,

but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

Now who says spanking is child abuse?

If I quote all my favourite bits we'll be here until Christmas, but a couple of bits I'd pick out would be Psalm 130:

Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord.

Lord hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

to the voice of my supplication.

If you O lord shall observe iniquities,

Lord, who shall endure it?

For with you there is merciful forgiveness;

and by reason of your law I have waited for you, O Lord.

My soul has relied on his word;

my soul has hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night

let Israel hope in the Lord.

Because with the Lord there is mercy,

and with him plentiful redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel

from all his iniquities.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

And let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace.

And the beginning of St. John's Gospel:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

Through him, all things came into being - not one thing came into being except through him.

What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men.

And light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.

I always did have a soft spot for Genesis 1. I rather like this version of it better than most.

>.>

When I saw that there was a link, I got a little bit excited that it might be Brick Testament. :)

I like ceiling cat better though.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
I like this verse because it's applicable to everyone.

These are my favorites:

1 After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. 2 He said to him: Take thy only begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision; and there thou shalt offer him for an holocaust upon one of the mountains which I will show thee. 3 So Abraham rising up in the night, saddled his ass, and took with him two young men, and Isaac his son: and when he had cut wood for the holocaust, he went his way to the place which God had commanded him. 4 And on the third day, lifting up his eyes, he saw the place afar off. 5 And he said to his young men: Stay you here with the ass; I and the boy will go with speed as far as yonder, and after we have worshipped, will return to you. 6 And he took the wood for the holocaust, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he himself carried in his hands fire and a sword. And as they two went on together, 7 Isaac said to his father: My father. And he answered: What wilt thou, son? Behold, saith he, fire and wood: where is the victim for the holocaust? 8 And Abraham said: God will provide himself a victim for an holocaust, my son. So they went on together. 9 And they came to the place which God had shown him, where he built an altar, and laid the wood in order upon it; and when he had bound Isaac his son, he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood. 10 And he put forth his hand, and took the sword, to sacrifice his son.

5 And when he had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith to him: I will come and heal him. 8 And the centurion, making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 And Jesus hearing this, marvelled; and said to them that followed him. Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel.

11 But Mary stood at the sepulchre without, weeping. Now as she was weeping, she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been laid. 13 They say to her: Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them: Because they have taken away my Lord: and I know not where they have laid him. 14 When she had thus said, she turned herself back and saw Jesus standing: and she knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith to her: Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou? She, thinking that it was the gardener, saith to him: Sir, if thou hast taken him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him: and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith to her: Mary. She turning, saith to him: Rabboni (which is to say, Master).

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

This is a very special chapter to me...

I like this one

Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

translated to a more common usage... Better to be silent and thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt...

Translated to redneck... Shut yer pie hole so they don't know you don't know nothin...

1 Corinthians 13 is one of my favorites--Jimbo/Point Man and I had it read at our wedding.

1If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

2If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

3And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,

5does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

6does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

9For we know in part and we prophesy in part;

10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

12For now we (V)see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Here's another of my favorites, Mark 12:29-31. It pretty much sums up how we Christians should approach life in a nutshell.

29Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;

30AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'

31"The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

EnderWiggin already quoted my favorite.

Do not judge, lest you be judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
My second favorite and the one that inspires me the most is:

John20:29 ~ Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
