A tangent from the Kavar's thread.

My favorite:

One of my particular favorite programs of there's is the Raptor Killer program: A program that was meant to create a plane that could take down the American's F-22 Raptor.

Out of this entire program, there is one plane that I love down to its bones:

The Sukhoi-47 Berkut "Golden Eagle", or FIRKIN.

BERKUT.jpg

Only one was ever made, used mainly as a plane to show off the fact that the Russians could still make up-to-date planes. The project was closed due to lack of money.

The forward swept wings are an alternative to Thrust Vectoring, but not enough research has been placed into the concept to make it better. Its unfortunate that the Berkut design is retired, as I would have loved to have seen the specs if it had been given Thrust Vectoring as well. The reverse wings give it amazing, beautiful maneuverability but also puts a high amount of strain onto the plane and a lot of G's onto the pilot. Its only been recently that we've had the technology to build them tough and light weight enough to keep them in the air.

It is faster, lighter weight with and without payload, and about as maneuverable as the F-22, but the design and lack of more research makes the current design prone to rolling out of control, which could probably be fixed by the implementation of Thrust Vectoring and a better fly-by-wire.

Its on shelf and probably permanently retired, but it goes to show that the Russians can still put their money where their mouth is. Plus, the plane is pretty awesome.

Anyone else got any personal favorites?

Definitely this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-117_Nighthawk

It's been my favorite since I was young, I just think it's awesome looking and like how it's used for stealth I guess. Apparently it's been retired because there are more effective models, but I've always just liked it because how it looks, can't claim to know a lot about it.

I actually have a poster similar to this in my room from when I went to this 100th Year of Flight thing down in Dayton, OH.

For the full rundown on the F-16 you can just follow the wiki link, but anyway... The venerable Fighting Falcon is my favorite aircraft, originally designed by General Dynamics for the US Air Force. Besides its extreme versatility and impressive capability, the thing just looks like it will straight **** you up, and it looks flippin' sexy while doing it. I've seen them on the ground, I've seen them at air shows, and I've had them near flip me over in my Cessna and every time I see one, they always make me just pause and look on in awe for a moment. So yea, the ageless F-16, my favorite.

Also as far as developing aircraft to out-maneuver the F-22, that isn't really the main challenge when confronting an F-22. The problem with fighting F-22's is that first, you need find the damn thing, and secondly you better hope it doesn't find you first or else by the time you find the 22, you'll already be dead. If anyone is going to make an aircraft to challenge the superiority of the US though, you gotta believe the Russians will be the ones to do it. Besides the fact that they make absolutely amazing aircraft, their pilots are insane, in a good way. This whole topic makes me want to go flying right now... or find my copies of AC4/5/Zero.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21

My dad's favourite aircraft ever, since the MiG-21 Bison is what he used to work on back when he was in the Air Force. I love the design of the plane, sturdy, stylish and ass-kicking. It's was one hell of a mother****er during the Soviet era, and that it's being used by Air Forces world over for 40+ years since it's inception is quite something.

Aye, 'tis a beauty.

F-4_parts_distribution.jpg

Many of those who worked with the F-4 Phantom II thought the aircraft was unattractive. That triggered a variety of nicknames, such as: Double Ugly, Rhino, Flying Anvil, Big Iron Sled and the Louisville Slugger. The aircraft also became known as "the world's leading distributor of MiG parts" in tribute to its record of downing 280 MiG aircraft. During the Vietnam War, the Phantom shot down its first MiG-17 on June 17, 1965, and its last MiG-21 on Jan. 12, 1973.

I favor the X-29. It also has forward-swept wings, but more than that is that it can perform almost at the same level as an aircraft with thrust vectoring. It's an experimental plane, but would have been a lethal fighter in its heyday.

I also like the B-1b because it is a spectacular bomber with speed, low-radar cross section, and tactical abilities. I think it out-classes the B-2 because it balances stealth with speed and agility. It is not invisible to radar, but its other characteristics compensate for that. Best of all... it doesn't cost over a billion dollars per aircraft.

And another plane that I like because it looks cool, the P38 Lightning

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-38_Lightning

Again, I don't really know if its a good plane, I just think its really neat looking.

It was a good plane, especially after they fixed the uncontrollable diving problems in later revisions (before that if you let the nose down at too great an angle you most likely couldn't pull up again for a long time). It's my favorite WW2 fighter.

Was the P-38 the "Angels on our Wings" aka tank buster, among other things?

I am surprised that no one has said anything about the F-15 Eagle.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is one of my all-time favorite aircraft. The F-15 was originally created to be an air superiority fighter, but the F-15E (Strike Eagle) can do both air to air & air to ground missions. Exeptional speed, and climbing capabilities. The times that I have seen these birds in the sky, their engines just scream freedom. Great aircraft.

To be short here are the specs.

Some other aircraft that I like are the C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135, AC-130 Spectre, F-16, F-22, F/A-18, B1-B.

Had a V-22 Osprey make an emergency landing at my school's local airport, they picked up icing :xp: The tower made me hold for 20 minutes while they cleared the path for that thing. They parked it in my school's maintenance hangar while they fixed it, gave a couple tours to a lucky few of us, it is an awesome plane, watching it do a STOL is freakin' sweet.
