REDJOHNNYMIKE Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I can't believe after playing it so long, I've never heard "KotOR" actually spoken, what is the official pronunciation of the abbreviation?
MdKnightR Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I have always heard people say "co-tore" with the long "o" sound.
REDJOHNNYMIKE Posted October 3, 2005 Author Posted October 3, 2005 That's kinda what I figured it would be, but I wasn't sure if it might be pronounced "kotter" but then malak would have an afro wouldn't he...
Vladimir-Vlada Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 It is spelt as same as a town in my country: KOTOR. Since in my country, the language is based on phonetic-transcription, I can't explain how do I pronunce it.
shamelessposer Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Despite my best efforts to pronounce it "Co-Tore," it instead tends to come out "Coat Whore" most of the time. Hence my not using the abbreviation too much when talking about the game in polite society.
RC-1162 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 actually, i just spell the abbreviation that makes it a whole lot easier. Kay-Oh-Tee-Oh-Are so when i say it fast, it comes out like: Kayoteeyoare.
RevanA4 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 actually, i just spell the abbreviation that makes it a whole lot easier. Bob Lion54 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 KOTOR- co (like cooperate) tore (as in the past tense of tear.) Co-tore I've also heard (mostly an accent thing, I guess) Co (like cooperate) Tar (like what they use for roadways) Co-tar
Kain Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Wow, people actually say co-tore when referring to it? Man, me and my friends usually just call it Knights - typically when we're talking about Star Wars. Which doesn't happen very often.
Darth InSidious Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 and the point of this thread is? rjm you should know by now that this sorta thread is spam For the love of the Great Green Arkleseizure, can't you lighten up even a little? Back on-topic: "Koh-Tor" "Koh" pronounced lie "Oh" with a "K" on the front, "Tor" like Glastonbury Tor. I met someone who pronounced Nihilus "Ny'ilus"....does anyone else? Personally, I thought it was more of a "Nee-hi-lus" sound...
El Sitherino Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 yes same here and the point of this thread is? rjm you should know by now that this sorta thread is spam And you should know by now that you aren't a moderator. I say the name so.... yeah.
RobQel-Droma Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Koe (with the o pronounced as"o") Torr (like door with a "t"). Thats the way I say it.
MdKnightR Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 And you should know by now that you aren't a moderator. Thanks for putting him in his place, Insane Sith!
Bastila Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I just say Knights of the old republic really not all this ''cor'' stuff, as no on knows what your talking about really unless they say it like that. So how would you pronounce TSL then??
RobQel-Droma Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Hmmm... not sure, I pronounce it usually like tay-ezzz-ollll . (just kidding)
ChAiNz.2da Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I already know I'm not a moderator but I know what is spam and what isn't and I still don't see the point of this thread. and WTF this is nothing but a spam thread it has no point Actually, there was another thread just like this, but rather than ressurecting an ancient thread (good call RJM ) he started a fresh one as per the "unspoken rules". It's a subject that does pertain to the game(s) indirectly since it's sometimes common ppl pronounce it differently (there's the 'point' of the thread). Also, this is a "generic" Forum (Ahto) so you can have certain "candid" threads. If it's really bothering you RTG, then ignore the thread simple and plain rather than the fact that you've now posted 2 of the very same type of posts you're complaining about (spam). In the future, if you suspect a thread of being spam related, use the PM system or the "Report this post" feature. Simply posting a comment saying "this is spam" is ironically enough.. spam as well. --------------- and for the record, I pronounce it: KO (as in Co-op) TOR (as in tore)
JediKnight707 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Why do people pernounce it Ko-tore? I have never heard that and I hope I never do! Now, personally, I pernounce it KOTAR. It just sounds right to me
Bob Lion54 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I met someone who pronounced Nihilus "Ny'ilus"....does anyone else? Personally, I thought it was more of a "Nee-hi-lus" sound... I say it... Ny (like "my" but with an "N") O (Like the "o" sound in "done" or "um") Lus (Like "lust" with out a "T") This is based of the assuption that his name is derived from "Annihilate." anyone else reminded of Sesame Street?
RobQel-Droma Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Why do people pernounce it Ko-tore? I have never heard that and I hope I never do! Now, personally, I pernounce it KOTAR. It just sounds right to me Uhhh...Maybe because the OR at the end would normally be spelled like "or". Knights of the Old Republic is not spelled KOTAR with an A, Jedi_Knight_707. The reason we pronounce it that way is because it is spelled that way.
90SK Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I met someone who pronounced Nihilus "Ny'ilus"....does anyone else? Personally, I thought it was more of a "Nee-hi-lus" sound... Yeah, that’s the "official" way to say it if you're following the metaphoric implication that his name comes off the word "Nihilism", which is pronounced "Nile-ism". So yeah, I say it "Nile-us". It's kinda easier than "Nih-hill-us". And yeah, I generally avoid saying KotOR by name. If I do, it's just Knights of the Old Republic, or Kote-or. @Jedi_Knight_707 Kotar? Really? I've never heard of that. Where do you get the "a" sound?
Bob Lion54 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 @Jedi_Knight_707 Kotar? Really? I've never heard of that. Where do you get the "a" sound? Probably because many people pronounce "or" almost, if not exactly, the same way they pronounce "are." In fact, many people do without relizing it sense we don't generally spend a lot of time studying our own speech patterns. I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of people said "KOTAR" but didn't relize it. You have to say "CO" because the "K" forces you to pronounce the first "O." Its also very close to "coat" so its natural for us to say it that way. The "OR" of KoTOR is pretty much pronounced however you say "or." It also depends on where you put the stress. If you say Kot'-or, you're more likely to say "or." If you say Ko'-tor, you really could pronounce it either way. Your accent even comes in to play. Think of President Kennedy saying it. hehe It would sound pretty funny. "KOOOO-TAAHR"
RevanA4 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 @ chainz thank never thought of it that way I edited my first post and deleted my second on but how i pernounce it depends on who I am with if I'm with fellow sw gamers I'll spell it out like k-o-t-o-r but if I'm with non gamers I'll say knights of the old republic instead same goes for tsl
JediKnight707 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I just don't pronounce it kotore. I always thought that was how it was prnounced. *shrug* Anyway (this is probably a very funky way of pronouncing it) I say it: Nil-e-us
