finally a Valentine's Day where i get to do something special for somebody. i'm going to be taking one of my close friends down to a really nice spot downtown. hopefully, it'll be our first date because i'm really thinkin' this could turn into something. she's a great girl, and we've been through a lot of stuff together already.

if things don't work out, at least i can say i did something as opposed to the past 6-7 Valentine's Days...

You know, I was feeling a bit sad that I don't have a girlfriend, but then I relized how much money they cost.

I think I will celebrate V-DAY by buying a bunch of stuff for MYSELF! No wine an roses for me. I'm thinking beer and pizza! [homer] MMMM Beer[/homer]

It's not a matter of how much _money_ you spend, it's a matter of how much _time_ you spend.

So you can't afford to go to a fancy place? Well, make a nice dinner at home (doesn't have to be fancy, but should be something more romantic than a box of Macaroni and Cheese), light some candles, turn down the lights, put in some nice music, maybe write a little romantic poem, and voila, instant romantic setting at a fraction of the cost. Buy 1 rose instead of a dozen, and buy it in her favorite color (unless you really want to get across the 'I love you' message, in which case stick with red). If she's aware of your financial situation, and she's the kind of girl you really want, she'll be understanding. If she expects a 4 star restaurant, jewelry, and a dozen longstem roses knowing you are a starving college student, well, she's not exactly the understanding type, now is she?

One of the best dates I had with hubby was going to his place for a romantic dinner he'd made himself. We ate in a candlelit apartment kitchen and had a great time talking. We've gone to lots of restaurants since, fancy and down-home, but that's still one of the best dates I ever had. In fact, he's making dinner again for tonight. I was pleasantly surprised when the army let him use up his leave so he was able to come home early, but it meant I hadn't made arrangements for childcare for tonight because I didn't think he'd be home. Getting childcare on Valentine's day requires a minor miracle. :) So, the kids can have their dinner and a video in one room while we have a nice dinner in the kitchen.

For all of you going out tonight, have a great time and enjoy!

So, another Valetines Day has come and gone, and we've emptied our bank accounts obediently once more. Hallmark's profit's have most likely doubled from the last quarter, and people who are smart enough to not buy anything have most likely spent the day hiding from their significant other(s), afraid of their wrath.

What's the point of holidays like this? Hell, it's not just this day (this one just happens to be one of the stupider ones); it's [stuff] like father's day, mother's day, etc, as well as Christmas, to an extent - though there are at least some people who celebrate Christmas for the right reasons.

Do some people really need to buy and recieve [gifts] to feel loved and accepted? If so, then these people are [sad]. They're simply bending over to the [will] that is commercialism, which is ready to penetrate the [soul] that is the buyer. These companies that exploit people's desires to make their loved ones happy are disgusting. It's pathetic. They should [live a long, happy life, and die peacfully in their sleep].

Did anyone else go to work/school and get to witness the stupidity all around? In my classes the guys were all joking around and asking other guys if they would be their valentines. Of course I did join in.

I popped everyone's balloons :D

Also, I'd celebrate Valentine's Day, however...

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

Not very romantic when you think about it :xp:

Me and my friends do that too. Only, it's very dirty when we "ask" each other out. I cannot elaborate because of all the kiddies here :D
