Jeff Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 That might be one of the oddest things I have ever heard. Ever.
Jae Onasi Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 She's a fine candidate for that new anti-psychotic drug study they're running over at the nearby medical school. Either that or the villagers are trying to get rid of her--"Oh, please, yes, kiss the cobra. Do we get your hut if you die?"
Mace MacLeod Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 Maybe it's a comment on the Indian men in the local area... I just don't get the "married" part. Can't she and the snake just stay good friends?
Hannibal Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 It's a cobra? I'm betting she doesn't survive the honeymoon. The marriage is already in trouble the groom didn't even attend the wedding.
Commander Obi-Wan Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 They'll have beautiful children. Definitely. That is, if they have children.
Sabretooth Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 Meh. It's just symbolical. She's not actually going to sleep with the snake, sillies. There are tons of such "marriages" which happen here...
Samnmax221 Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 Meh. It's just symbolical. She's not actually going to sleep with the snake, sillies. There are tons of such "marriages" which happen here... Since when?
Sabretooth Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 Since when? Ages. It's old, like tradition. Like, marrying this will give plenty of good luck, or doing this will give bad luck etc. Most of these customs got wiped out around the time the British took over, but they haven't stopped. And honestly, with the crappy sort of government India has, I don't think they ever will.
Hallucination Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 This is almost funny, but I almost want to cry....
RC-1162 Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 actually, Sabre is right, both of us being Indians, we know how much it sucks, well the nonsense traditions that is, like Sati. that is when the widow burns herself either willlingly or unwilliingly alive on he dead husband's funeral pyre. so yeah, apart from the pissed-up attitude of the british toward the indian ppl, the rule was quite beneficial in removing some of these beliefs and restoring sanity in some parts of india.
Char Ell Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 ^^^ HA-HA-HA-AHHHHH-HAAA *cough* *choke* BWAHA-HA-HAHHH-HAHHH-HA *wipes tears from eyes* HA-HA-ha-huh-heh-heh-heh. Whew! That was a good one. Thanks to our resident Indians Sabretooth and RC 1162 for providing the details about Indian history and culture that the news article did not. Cultural superstitions are not unique to the Indians and are indeed hard for people to let go of.
