Margaret Cho is one of the only comedians I actually find funny. Most of them are either trying too hard, or think simply being obscene is funny. If you're going to be obscene, at least do it in an amusing way. -_-

Stephen Lynch is great because he sings while making you laugh. Any windbag can stand up on a stage and tell jokes. Takes something special to put them to a melody and make it work.

Oh and anyone who drops Dane Cook's name as a vote for best comedian immediately forfeits any credibility whatsoever.

I'ma say this now, while I have the chance. If anyone says Jerry Seinfeld, they're wrong. Jerry Seinfeld is not funny. There's just no two ways about it.

EDIT: Curse you, Moeller.

As for someone who is funny, I'd have to say it's a toss-up between Robin Williams, Russell Peters, and Emo Phillips.

Geez, you people don't know funny. Bill Cosby is the ultimate comedian. End of thread.

I wouldn't say Bill Cosby is the end all of comedians, but he is at the top of a very short list. Anyone that does not think his album “himself” isn’t funny does not know what funny is. Listen to that then try to go to the dentist and keep a straight face.

For stand up I’ll go with:

1. Richard Pryor – Yes, he was vulgar and he used the “N” word so much it made me uncomfortable to listen to him, however no one was funnier and his comedy had a point. “Is It Something I Said?” is my favorite.

2. Eddie Murphy – Delirious and Raw are two of my favorite DVD of all-time. I cannot pass a McDonalds without cracking a smile.

3. Bill Cosby – Only comedian that I have ever seen in concert more than once. The added bonus is you can listen to him with your parents in the room.

4. Jerry Clower – Redneck humor long before Jeff Foxworthy cracked his first smile. Again comedy you can listen to with your parents and you can learn everything you never wanted to know about coon huntin’, and Mississippi. I recommend “Jerry Clower’s Greatest Hits.”

If we are talking a movie Comedians my favorite all time are:

1.Cary Grant watch “Bringing Up Baby,” “People Will Talk,” “My Favorite Wife,” “I Was A Male War Bride,” “His Girl Friday,” “Father Goose,” “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House”…to see what I’m talking about.

2. Lee Marvin see “Paint Your Wagon” or “Cat Ballou.”

Television:

Jerry Sinfield or Bill Cosby.

Hey, Bill Cosby could have been in all three categories if I would have counted those movies with Sidney Poitier he made in the 70s. Perhaps Jae was right, but I’m bias against Bill Cosby for his show going head to head against “Magnum” in the 80s and winning.

Bless you my son! :D

Though even Mr. Marvin did admit that his award winning Cat Ballou part was enhanced by the outstanding performance of his horse. (If you others don't know of what I'm referring to... well you can Google it.) ;)

I can trump that one... Don Rickles.

Cosby is awful. Sure he's good if you're a kid, but that's only when he's good. I just can't take the guy seriously after the Cosby Show.

Jerry Sienfield? He's alright, he just got old.

And Demetri Martin... Good comic, just takes a lot of Mitch Hedburg's jokes and delivery styles.

Actually, Robin Williams got mentioned in post#10.

There were some pretty funny ones listed. Pryor, Cosby, Carlin (more early than later), Black, Chappelle, Murphy and Rickles to name a few. I'll have to check some of the other ones b/c I've not really heard any of their material before. Dave Allen (Irish comic) was also really funny. Saw Dane Cook try to roast Dennis Leary, pathetic. Haven't seen much of Mencia since the joke plagerizing accusations became more widespread. "Dice" was pretty good when he came out, but his aptly titled "The Day the Laughter Died" seemed to be something of a swansong (though Ford Fairlane is a riot). Never though Seinfeld was all that funny. Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm is a bit uneven, but better than Seinfeld.
