*Stargate.. never saw the movie. MacGyver in space? Seemed low tech effects wise

That was what I though first, too. But then BAM, awesome show. The original movie is meh at best compared to it. Anderson is doing a great job as O'Neill, and I'm not really sure how you can even breathe without that you ever saw Window of Opportunity.

*Babylon 5 - most reports are glowing, I probably will check this out eventually

*Crusade - dont know much about it (apart that its a B5 Spinoff)

I can comment on these.

Babylon 5- I LOVE this show up to season 5. Season 5 wasn't as good, quite honestly. The thing that I really love is how intricate the story is. JMS had the main story and character arcs laid out before he began running the show. What's amazing is that something said in season 1 will suddenly have a whole new meaning later on. It's hard to be more specific without spoilers, but the show is awesome.

Crusade- Only lasted, what... like 5 or 6 episodes. It seemed to have potential. The show picks up the story of what happens after B5 ends and how they deal with a certain major event at the end of B5, but the crew is barely introduced and that's it. It's not even a situation where they had to wrap up the show early. They set up the show's premise, then no more episodes.

Stargate: SG-1- I could write a novel about SG-1. Don't worry if you haven't seen the movie. They set it up so it doesn't really matter and you can pick up what happened in the movie from what the characters say in the first episode.

"MacGyver in space." heh. Same actor, COMPLETELY different character. Mac is a goody goody boyscout that seems to know everything from a science book. O'Neill (Two- "L"s) is a wisecracking, irreverent USAF Colonel that has a problem with authority and scientist. O'Neill is freaking hilarious at times and Richard Dean Anderson turns out to be a pretty good actor.

I'll leave it at that for now, but definitely check out SG-1.

Should I watch?

*New Battlestar Galactica... it seems to have lasted. I started watching it in S1, that guy imagining that blonde girl(Cylon) put me off a bit. Less psychobabble, more space battles.

*Stargate.. never saw the movie. MacGyver in space? Seemed low tech effects wise

*Babylon 5 - most reports are glowing, I probably will check this out eventually

*Farscape - seems to have positive reviews - dont know much else about it

*Crusade - dont know much about it (apart that its a B5 Spinoff)

First, Battlestar Galactica. I respectfully advise against watching. It's way too dramatic and too political. I mean seriously, the people in the show seem to always go like: "OMG it's so horrible I'm gonna cry and consider committing suicide" at every single tiny little thing that makes them unhappy. The space battles are pure epic awesomeness though. I gave the show a chance several times but the drama was just too rediculous. The political stuff in it: boring. The characters are hard to connect with because either they're drama queens/kings or just plain boring... I wish I could learn to love BSG and say something positive about it, but it's just too dramatic.

Stargate: One of my favorite shows ever! Great, entertaining characters, brilliant story, perfectly balanced drama and excitement, epic space battles, immersive adventures... SG1 and Atlantis are pure awesomeness, IMO.

Farscape and Crusade I have no clue about...

I can't believe I forgot this one, too:

Quantum. ****ing. Leap.

hehe.. You may remember the trek thread where I waxed on endless about my (non sexual) love for Johnny Archer. Of course Ive seen QL :D Oswald episode is my favourite. I loved it when Dean Stockwell did a cameo on Enterprise ;) I didnt mention QL above as I was trying to focus in on shows that were set in space/future(or related to them like the DW spinoffs)

Looks like alot of SG-1 fans here. There must have been some disappointment when it was all closed down :( Still, it had a decent run for a sci-fi show.

A show that makes 2-3 seasons these days is seen as a stayer :p Back in the old days we were given 2-3 seasons to warm up to the show and get to know the characters, like STTNG

@Trex I dont mind Primeval at all ;) Nothing wrong with mixing time travel and dinosaurs. S3 not too far away!

...and I'm not really sure how you can even breathe without that you ever saw Window of Opportunity.

Dont you mean Open Source Alternative of Opportunity? :p

The only one I regularly watch is BSG, but I can't decide whether I should hate or love it. Some episodes are great and psychologically deep, while others are plain boring (everything related to politics). Some episodes piss me off as well (in which certain characters are so ignorant and self-centered it's unbelievable).

Still, the episodes that are good are really good, and that's why I continue to watch it.

Speaking of Dean Stockwell, he makes an appearance in an episode of SG-1, season 6 to be exact.

Nice. My fave Dean Stockwell role is Ben from Blue Velvet. if you havent seen Blue Velvet.....I'll give you $5 virtual dollars to watch it - its amazing and weird - a true David Lynch opus. 'Ben' and his performance is quite unforgettable, as is Dennis Hopper :p I saw that movie when I was 9 and I still think of it quite alot.

There seems to be alot of Cross pollenisation is sci-fi. Andromeda had the actor that played Q from Trek and one of the main characters from SG-1 pop up a few times. There's a couple of others, but Ive gone totally blank atm :( 39C here today

No, most SG1 fans accepted the show's end with grace, acknowledging that it was past it's prime - the Ori storyarch had potential, but they bombed it. Even the cast knew it was time to finish. Only the writers wanted to carry on - that's why they have that half-assed final season.

Atlantis was lame, and even the few people I know who consider themselves fans realise that it needed to die. :xp:

I died on the inside when I heard Sci-fi Channel was ending it back in '06:(, even with 10th season being a little eh, the Ori were aweosme in season 9 though. I got mad at MGM for cancelling Atlantis after only 5 seasons, so much more left to tell, but movies are coming!

Lame,WHAT!? The fans on the Atlantis forums on Sc-Fi are in tears, i'm one of them.

Word... though I liked B5 all the way through... Season 5 just wraps up the plots that were still open and opened up new ones Crusade was supposed to wrap up...

Crusade, was going to be made of win, I just know it... but alas the short sighted people who run TV networks thought otherwise...

Stargate SG-1... made of win... I haven't seen all the last few seasons of the show though (I stopped being able to watch regularly just about when Atlantis started, but I caught what I could when Sci-Fi showed episodes late at night/early morning), now I haven't seen much Atlantis, but I have heard and seen good things, from what I did see.

Quantum Leap I can't watch anymore, because knowing the end of the series makes it hard.

Farscape had its moments... some memorable some not.

... you're seriously asking if you should watch Babylon 5? I wasn't aware there was a single self-respecting SciFi fan out there who hadn't seen it. o_O Definitely start with this.

The Doc and I agree on something... I gotta lie down! :xp:

Babylon 5 was boring as poop.

:disaprove

Well, I'd definitely recommend Battlestar Galactica. Say what you want, but this show has a great acting crew and a very interesting story. The second half of season 4 (which is rumored to be the last one) has started broadcasting and it already had some interesting twists.

Otherwise, I'd recommend Heroes, even though it's not a space SF. If you liked X-Men, you'll definitely like Heroes.

I forgot about Alien Nation--I enjoyed that one, too. The movie that spawned the show is enjoyable, but I love anything that has Mandy Patinkin in it.

Mork and Mindy--absolutely hilarious if you're a big fan of Robin Williams' brand of zany, hyperactive ad-libbing style of humor. I love Robin in anything too, so Mork and Mindy was a blast.

Battlestar for me Astro, the first season was amazing, second and third pretty good too, though not always as consistent, but the fourth has been solid and every episode has you on the edge of your seat. it's gettig better every time!

It's on it's final run now as well, with the series finale somewhere in March I think, so you know they're not gonna keep it going for the sake of it, I hope they end it well, but 4 seasons will make a nice and polished finished product, without turning into a "Lost" or "24" debacle...

The quality doesn't look as polished as some because it has some filter effect to it that makes it more gritty, documentary style, looking, which adds to the way the plot is told though :)

It is very political and involves a lot of drama between the main characters, but the storyline remains solid and supports it well, gives the characters a lot more depth and it impacts the storyline as no one is really "good" or "evil", it's all depends how you look at it, "from a certain point of view" ;)
