Mass Effect 2 [thread contains spoilers]

From what has been said by the devs, I gather that ME2 is pretty much a clean slate in that virtually nothing gets carried over from the first game. You get reset to level 1, you lose all your gear, virtually your entire party is gone. I'm not sure why they even bothered keeping Shepard in it given that all your choices in the first game appear to be completely inconsequential.

They could have done something along the lines of what Shining Force 3 did (way back in the day) and have 3 games with 3 different main characters all taking part in the same narrative simultaneously.

I wouldn't say that they're inconsequential, but your choices and the fact you're playing as your Shepard are the only things that carry over.

I don't see why they're giving people the opportunity to change their savegame's class or appearance, though.

If I changed both of those, then it's not the same character I played through the first game with.

They may as well not have bothered and just said flat out that it's a completely new game with no ties to the first.

You kidding, right? It's the sequel, of course it has ties. Why make The Empire Strikes Back when it isn't going to star Luke?

Break down time:

- Decisions will carry over. Perfect example: the council. Even on side-quests the decisions carry, i.e Nessana Dantius.

- The game has a plot. I highly doubt it's totally unrelated to ME1.

- The game's main character is the same as Mass Effect 1.

- Combat it good when your game is basically an tps/rpg hybrid.

The game already looks pretty black and white, though. Screw the gray areas, Bioware needs to figure out how to do a non-cheesy evil.

I would be suprised if they really dumped it all what you did in ME 1.

There where rather some big decisions to take, now and then in the game.

The Rachni Queen comes to mind, as the survivale of the Council at the end.

In one situation I can see the bugs returning in full force, but on your side, kicking Reapers behinds.

The other dicision is you can give all power to humans to run the show, its like starting a "dictatorship" and not caring, aslong you can do what you need to do. Wild west style.

Since most of those kind of quest things would be a Variable with a value in your savegame it can't be that hard to copy it over?

Think of it this way. When you have a series of decisions and the choices for each are polar opposites, how much weight do you think they can have when the devs have provide for both outcomes and the various permutations of them all? The answer? Not much. If you are expecting your decisions from ME1 to have a massive influence on the narrative of ME2 I think you're in for a disappointment....

Just as well. PR and marketing is anathema to me. As for whether I'm right or wrong, well only time will tell I guess. But at the end of the day what it boils down to is that Bioware have a story they want to tell - how much effect your various choices throughout all 3 games will have on that story remains to be seen.

A month to go before release!

The guys over at 1Up released a new podcast called 4 Guys 1UP. The 12/18 episode has a good 30 - 40 minutes of Mass Effect 2 discussion. One where they try to be spoiler free and one where they literally talk about the first 3 or so hours of the game).

I almost forgot that it's released during Winter-een-mas. That's how I'll be celebrating it in 2010.

Seems, like you can now adjust a lot that doesn't really matter much. They're fun small details though. No doubt certain fans will go and hunt for that rare fish, that you can only get when you bedded every female party member, hidden on planet X. >_<

Anyway, just a week left before I can play it myself. What I'm hoping for is that the party members have the same sort of banter amongst each other, the crew had in DA :p

I really like how you can customize your casual look.

IMO all these little things are great!

And bathrooms! Finally! This is the first time i have ever seen any sort of reference in any sci-fi game or movie that the characters have waste elimination systems!

Yeah, didn't remember if that's what is was called, though.

*raises hand*

True, though its rather trivial, unless something important happens there, a scene that forwards the plot. I don't need to see a toilet, to know that living creatures need to take a "dumb".

Of course, it's a cue for hilarious slapstick scenes... >_<

All of a sudden I see Garrus, runn'n towards a bush on planet... o_Q

I love the new Normandy. It looks more "realistic" and functional than the SR1. Like the crew quarters, mess area, armory, etc. I really like the new med bay.

As for the ability to customize armor and stuff, I would have loved that in ME1. It sucked having to wear yellow or pink armor until something better and cooler came along.

The Sci vs Fi special for Mass Effect 2 is airing tonight (on Syfy). You can also catch Part I and II at GameTrailers. It does contain spoilers.
