Darth Nihilus - Lord of Hunger

I seem to be on a roll here! :p

 

I've always liked the design of Darth Nihilus, generally. It's a very simple yet instantly recognizable costume, and perhaps the best of the KOTOR Sith. The concept art had a really great look. However, the final game result was, like Atris, just not as good as that. The mask in particular looked very different. Since then, we've had a Wizards of the Coast image and a Hasbro figure. The mask of the latter of which is much closer to the concept art, and both show Nihilus with what almost looks to be black Jed robes.

 

This reskin does not completely change the design of Nihilus, but like the Darth Malak - Dark Lord of the Sith, simply improves the idea and makes it look closer to recent images. The mask, robe, and cape have been completely redone, in addition to more overall texture to the robes.

First off, your robes are well done. The added texture provides depth and believability to the robes, which originally looked flat and lifeless. As for the mask, while you've succeeded in making it look more iconic and dramatic, I think that the high contrast, graphic look of it doesn't fit with the new robes (even though it works perfectly for a dramatic cutscene or iconic promo poster). While the new robe has more detail than before, the cloth under the mask now has less detail. I saw this screenshot which shows half his face in shadow, but the other half is highlighted to show the detail (I'm guessing that it is an action figure).

 

I realize that this is a stylistic choice, but IMHO I think that somewhere halfway between the original texture and your new one would suit it better.

 

As for the detail up and down the middle of the mask, it looks like you've just widened the texture, and it doesn't match the model anymore. In the close-up of the face (screenshot #6) it looks like double vision on that circle part. Have you considered modifying the model to re-shape the white part of the mask? So far, I've seen some nice texture work from you Drewton, maybe you'll do just as well at modeling.

Wow. My jaw hit my keyboard when I saw this.

 

I want it! Before Nihilus was just a wierd guy in some black plastic trash bags, but now he looks menacing! I love the texture on the robes!

Salzella: Yeah, gaussian blur with overlay is correct.

redrob41: All fair criticism. That image you showed as an example, though, is fan art IIRC...but there was still more facial detail previously in-game. Personal preference, maybe, but I never really liked how much detail you could see of the face beneath; I think making it darker makes it more mysterious. Same with the eyes. For the allignment, I'd replaced the original with the concept art mask completely and I admit that I alligned it wrong...something to fix if I ever do a v2. Fortunately, though, it's only noticeable in close-ups.
