Jae Onasi
It's Ash Wednesday on the Christian calendar today, marking the start of Lent. Do you do anything special for Lent? Do you give anything up, or add something to your day in observance of Lent?

Jae Onasi
You're sassy! Let's see--my doc wants me to eat more fish, and the Good Lord (along with the rest of my family and friends) wants me to be healthy, so I'll be working on increasing exercise and having fish on Friday. A little more prayer won't hurt, either, especially given all the, eh, 'excitement' we've had in our family recently (see blog).
mimartin
I've given up giving warnings and infractions for lent. Only option that leaves is perma-bans.

That's why you posted here then? You said you don't pay attention yet you just posted in this thread?

Jae Onasi
OK, people, let's keep this semi-on track. It's an Ahto thread so joking (e.g. Pastrami's and Bart's posts) is OK. Showing disrespect and/or contempt for the people here who are celebrating the season is flame-baiting and not OK. Saying "I'm not giving anything up because I'm not Christian" is off-topic and not OK. Responding to people who make obnoxious comments is not OK--report the post instead. Anyone else who decides to break forum rules in this thread will be infracted, no other warnings than this will be given.

Q
I usually give up pointing out how absolutely full of it some people are, and that they're not fooling anyone possessing even casual knowledge of Christianity. Oops. Well, I guess there's always next year.
Bimmerman
Not Christian, but genuinely curious- isn't Lent a Catholic-only thing? The only people I know who actually do Lent are Catholics...my Protestant friends usually joke they're giving up beer for a day or two.

It was celebrated more widespread before the protestant reformation. Now it is primarily Roman Catholic with a few other churches, like Anglican, celebrating it. You can tell it is Catholic because, like many Catholic Holidays, its pretty guilt based (J/k, please don't destroy me)

I gave up computer games the past two years and I haven't decided what I will give up this year. When I was like 4, I gave up my least favorite toy because I was a greedy little boy. I may just not give anything up this year and I may start doing something instead.

I think the concept of 'giving up something for Lent' is pretty Catholic, and while I'm not Catholic, I don't think the Baptists have the corner on all things Christian, either. I like the concept of the 'whatever it is I sacrifice' (albeit small in comparison) reminding me of Christ's ultimate sacrifice.
Darth InSidious
Over here it's a far more universal thing. Not many people actually do give things up, but I'd be shocked if anyone hadn't heard of it.
LordOfTheFish
I'm thinking about giving up chocolate. Usually if I don't pick something relatively easy to give up I'll break it within the first week. I at one time attended a church that was big time into this sort of thing. Now that I'm at a non-denominational church it's rarely spoken of, but I still choose to participate because I feel it's right.
Pho3nix
Actualy, I am an Episcipalian (American equivilent of Anglican) I think you should start labeling yourself after you've actually figured out what you want to believe in, instead of what your parents told/taught you to believe. Te Darasuum Mandalor
I am actually going to be confirmed soon. But yeah, I have some friends who are REALLY evangelical, tey are really good people, but kinda funny sometimes. They believe that all religions (even Catholics) go to Hell after they die, they also think that bowing to crosses is wrong. They think it is an idol. They also think the conept od Lent is stupid. I think I decided I am going to give up Soda.
Hypnotiq
I like how Lent is a couple months after New Years, it's another chance for all of you who failed your new years resoloutions to TRY AGAIN, albeit for a lesser period of time That being said, I am Methodist, and we give up things for Lent. This year I am giving up homework, and college. But no seriously I am giving up biting my nails, and alcohol, and partying. I used to give up things I didn't like, but I'm older and thus smarter now.
