I just released the German version! Who do you think voices Nightmare-Guybrush in this one?4 points

Thank you! Oh man. Making this film made me want to make more animations again. I have ideas for Curse! And other films: I'd love to make an Escape one, and a film for Maniac Mansion. But it's hard to say if I have time at all. Monkey 2 was a exception, fueled by the ReMI hype I was ok with spending a ton of free time on it. We will see!3 points

It's funny, because you said something earlier in this thread that kind of blew my mind and questioned my perspective on Elaine in Curse, in connection to Elaine from the previous games: "Elaine likes Guybrush. But Guybrush isn't ready for a relationship, and that was the central takeaway of LeChuck's Revenge. Most of us have probably tried to worm their way back into Elaine's heart back in that infamous party scene. Which was a game of trial and error, one that always ended in failure. Eventually, Guybrush would choose Big Whoop over Elaine for us and in spite of us. It was a line in the sand that we could not cross. Sure, he'd take Elaine AND Big Whoop, but if he only got ONE, well ... sorry Elaine, pirate here." If we follow that thought: Elaine likes Guybrush and is ready for a stable relationship. The only reason they aren't together in Revenge is because Guybrush is not on that same page and not ready to make the choices toward getting there. Elaine is there; Guybrush had to catch up. And so (if we give CMI more credit than it likely deserves), CMI is the action of Guybrush catching up. Giving Elaine the cursed ring is arguably an apt metaphor for Guybrush's entire approach to their relationship thus far... flawed, lazy, and destructive. Literal objectification, right? Guybrush has to undo all that, and approach it the proper way. In Revenge, Guybrush chooses treasure over Elaine. In Curse, Guybrush chooses Elaine over treasure... literally. He literally chooses Elaine over treasure to the extent that he changes a golden treasure in his possession back into Elaine.3 points

This is obsessing over little details, but I'm loving Guybrush's default expression. At first, I read it as a bit pensive and uncertain. But now I'm reading it as more quizzical, dazed, or resigned. It is a very netural face and would be made to be read in a number of ways. And these are all fitting emotions for Guybrush. And I like it. Haha reading too much into a little eyebrow asymmetry.3 points

As the guy who did the header image for that article, I think ReMI looks great! Its art feels very much like work of an accomplished and technically competent artist going for a particular style (and it is - looking at Rex Crowle's previous works they're jawdroppingly good. Knights and Bikes in particular, you can really tell it was his passion project). No one's wrong to dislike it or disagree with it stylistically, but half the fun in appreciating art is engaging with stuff you don't like, wouldn't you agree3 points

By the way, I *think* it might have been possible to get Norman Matt for those few lines, since he's a fan of MI himself. A few years ago I got him to do a few minutes of Guybrush narration for an audio-birthday-card I gave to a friend, which he was totally up to.2 points

Update: Apparently this is not the original but is still rare, even if itβs just a print: It was a large format print made for Telltaleβs office lobby. I donβt know that itβs worth 1-5000 dollars though. Anyone could blow up a print for their house and it would be functionally the same. Youβd have to really care that itβs telltale office ephemera.2 points

Idle soundtrack thought as I prepare to sleep: love the snippets we've heard so far. But I hope as well as the kind of background, slightly noodly pieces which are more about mood setting we're also gonna hear some really memorable new themes and musical set pieces in this game. I'm sure we will, I'm just aching to hear them. As much as I love the more background stuff it was the team's melodic sensibilities that really had the biggest influence on me as a composer, and ah, I really want to hear it.2 points

Itβs definitely a me problem. I can look at the game intellectually and admit that itβs probably the best one but it has one aspect thatβs unique to the series that i canβt get past and thatβs navigating between islands. Sounds like no big deal but having to go to the overview of the island, go to a location, find an item, go back to the overview, go to captain dredd, go to another island, go to the overview, go to the next location and then use the item is just too much of a slog for me and it actively sucks the fun out of the other aspects of the game. That one extra step of having to use dredds ship is nothing at all but when you have to do it every 5 minutes it feels like you spend more time getting to places than you do actually playing the game. Glad it doesnβt bother anyone else but thereβs something in me that just hates it. Still like the game but that constant minor annoyance knocks it down my rankings. I struggle with day of the tentacle for similar reasons. I think rons said in the past that he recognises it was a problem so iβm not too worried about it happening again in return but the fact that the ice queen of brrmuda has a crown made of keys but the locksmith is in melee is concerning.2 points

Yeah, and there was so much, for lack of a better word, backstory, in the way that Griswold delivered his dialogue. Even when the dialogue didn't necessarily call for it, you could tell that the character had lived a full life, you felt the immense respect that he had for his family, yet there was a sadness in his voice of being the last of his line, and feeling like he's letting the family down with the family hotel business drying up. (Until Guybrush saves the day of course!) On another note... is LeChuck's stress toy La Esponja Grande?... π2 points

That is the problem with being a part of a journalistic, deep-diving, award-winning website like Mojo β with its integrity and grace we have to cover those teasers. For the people. Or we just have no willpower or restraint, who can really tell?2 points

I've got to say I loved #Mojole #127. I guess I can't post spoilers yet but I was so close and yet so far for so many guesses (see above). And when I finally got it... well. That was a huge part of Monkey Island, for me. The biggest part, actually.1 point

I think we are all happy for every new film youβll do β whatever the game/subject or time. π SPOILER-btw.: Did you try to get Norman Matt or was this one your first choice? (To be clear, heβs never a bad choice!) I just replayed CMI in german and had a really fond nostalgic feeling , hearing his Guybrush again after a very long time, as he was my first introduction to MI.1 point

Still amazing and full of great ideas! π Thanks for the extra work. So, next One CMI or Return? π¬1 point

I doubt Steve painted it that big, and I think the original had far more space around it where the painting ran off outside the cropped bounds. But itβs been a long time since I saw that thing. I wonder if this is a somehow-never-folded version of the large print included in some European retail editions?1 point

I get what you're saying, and I think it's a VERY healthy way of looking at it! I've just been psyched about this from the beginning, so I'm pretty sure I've stopped following the news at the right time. Before the trailer I was pining for more information. Now, I feel like I have enough to keep me curious for the next couple of months. Because of social media, I feel entertainment industries have a tendency to overfeed their audience with information to stay relevant between all the other releases. That's why I choose to control the amount of information I'm getting. For example, I've heard they showed off one of the chapter screens, and I'm really glad I didn't see it yet! I want to save those for when I play the game! (So please keep all spoilers in the RtMI thread.)1 point

I think the implication is that Elaine found LeChuck physically attractive and had him over for dinner but once she found out how depraved he truly was, told him to drop dead.1 point

Tangent: Elaine went "woof" at Human LeChuck. Did she see him as "woof" when he was alive?1 point

Maybe Ron secretly has the release date announcement set to trigger when someone asks him for it the number of times it takes for the navigator head to give you the necklace.1 point

It would be amazing if the release date is just casually revealed by Ron in a tweet to a user asking. Would be perfect for his type of humor. Sadly, that day is not today.1 point

Apart from more platforms, I wonder what else this could possibly mean that isn't a release date. I feel like the implication is that it's not coming out next month, but I think that's not too surprising. Oh! release date announced1 point

Yeah, I always thought that was a bit of a stretch, especially in Tales. She was obviously capable and adventurey, but her attitude towards pirates in MI1 seems at best neutral. She's attracted to guybrush enough to let him get a way with some stealing, I suppose? Although that leads me on a tangent to thinking about the Idol of Many Hands, and why it's called that. It doesn't seem to be because it looks like many hands, and so I'm guessing the idea is that it's called the Idol of Many Hands because it exchanges many hands because it's always getting stolen by pirates doing the trials. It wouldn't have surprised me, if things had gone the way they were meant to, if Guybrush had been expected to turn the Idol back in in exchange for another t-shirt at the end. More of that theme parky stuff...1 point

Yeah that makes sense. I guess we just interpret those scenes differently. Iβm starting to think Iβm misremembering revenge. I play through 1-5 every couple of years but always hurry through 2 as itβs my least favourite (Iβll desperately try and justify myself on that another time π) But the way i read it is that elaine is clearly very into guybrush in secret. Sheβs holding those feelings back in revenge because of the way heβs acted but is ready to run back to him when heβs ready to grow up. Then in curse sheβs relieved heβs alive and thatβs what spurs her on to put up with his nonsense if it means she can be with him. Luckily in the intervening time guybrush has grown up somewhat and is less arrogant than he was meaning that they are finally a perfect fit. The only problem is he then proceeds to turn her into solid gold. Thatβs perfectly serviceable to me as a love story. It would have been nice if most of the important parts werenβt in curseβs opening cutscene alone but i can get over that because that particular game isnβt trying to be a love story as much as itβs trying to be an adventure story. That being said, if i am misremembering revenge all of that falls apart π1 point
-
Agreed that that would be a better story. Not trying to say curse was a perfect love story. Obviously itβs far from it as thatβs not the stories primary goal. But it just feels somewhat disingenuous to see her and guybrush instantly show strong feelings for each other in secret, then see her mask slip in revenge revealing that she clearly STILL feels strongly about him but then to act like her love for him in curse came out of nowhere. Itβs pretty clearly shown in the opening of curse that she thinks, or at least fears guybrush is dead. Finding out the person you love has effectively come back from the dead, found you only to instantly βdieβ in a capsizing ship only to repeat the process would be pretty powerful. Iβm a straight man but iβd have said yes too. Again though iβm not saying itβs amazing. Just that it seems to get a disproportionate amount of commentary considering most of the games are equally or more guilty of mishandling her and the relationship as a whole.1 point

One of the most clever twists of ReMI's announcement was to "declare" CMI, EMI and Tales canon in the Gilbert-Grossman-verse. Because it keeps us wondering how they're going to treat past lore, what they are going to explicitly honor and what they are going to ignore. What characters besides Murray might be coming back. What places we might re-visit, what history they might reference or even re-stage to bring the newbies up to speed with the lore. Judging from my "WAIT IS THAT MORGAN" moment in the trailer, a whole lot of non-puzzle-adjacent detective work is coming up, and I'll find that quite delicious.1 point

Don't know if this is an unpopular stance or not, but I stopped following the news (and the RtMI thread) shortly after the trailer hit. I don't want to know anything more about it before the game hits! (Except where I can order my boxed copy!)1 point

I don't mind the chemistry and I think you have a point that she vibes well with what Guybrush is doing. It's the writing that bothered me. I could believe that version of Elaine if her main thing wasn't always ordering Guybrush around. Or even at the start, being weirdly expectant of a hero's welcome back to Melee then comically put out when she doesn't get one -- this is supposed to be the same Elaine who seemed to be frustrated by the attention that she got from the pirates of the island, and keen to distance herself from them, the same Elaine who was nervous about even publicly revealing her relationship with Guybrush, the same elaine who in MI2 threw exclusive parties for people she didn't know, and apparently didn't even bother to turn up to them. Why's she gonna care if people are celebrating their arrival or not. If anything she'd be looking to arrive as quietly as possible so that she could resume the business of governing as if nothing happened. But yeah, there's something in the core of your unpopular opinion there, I think. Whatever else you thought of elaine in EMI, her energy does work with Dom's.1 point
