Ztalker
Let me start with a statement: This is about Expanded Universe (EU) Material. It's specifically about the book series. It's mostly an opinion, so....it's based on facts. Correct me if I'm wrong on stuff Well, let me start it all with a picture: That's Han Solo, 65 years at the picture. In the current books, he's already 69 years old, with Leia and Luke being 59. He's got a son, Jacen, who's 31, and a granddaughter of Allana, 4 years old. And he still flies the Falcon. Luke Skywalker still beats Jacen, just like he's in his twenties. What I try to illustrate with this? The...strange turn the books are taking. The movie characters seem to be 'immortal' of some sort. But the milk-cow (Dutch experession for money-generator, chicken with the golden eggs, etc) has to continue. And that milk-cow has all the movie characters. I haven't read these 'legacy era' books. I lack the time, and I simply don't have the time to find the specialised stores that do buy these books. I only get the main plotlines. Anyways, I always thought of...Star Wars of something...special. Three young people fighting for the rebellion, finding their place in the war. Sacrifices are made (Obi-Wan, Vader) and they 'grow' into the adults and hero's we all like to see. Sure, add a Grand-Admiral to spark the conflict again! (Thrawn) The hero's get back to their old ways, as we like to see them. Sure, add a new enemy from the Outer Rim! But....wait...our heroes are getting a bit old. Let's create some new heroes to be on the safe side, so the 'torch' can be passed. Sure, create a game with Kyle Katarn. He goes on all sorts of movie-like adventures. Hey! There's Luke with a cameo! All 'good' examples (allthough the Yuuzhan Vong Was was a bit...stretchy And now, we're on a 'strange' point with the Star Wars franchise. We got heroes who are (let's face it) too old to 'do the stuff' we'd love them to do. In a possible next book series, their age will again be raised with X years. Han Solo will have passed into his seventies, Luke into his sixties. Whilst Wedge got an in-Universe goodbye (he retired), Luke and the rest are still...kept young to please us. Look at the above picture. Does that look like your average 65-year old? Other SW character seem to be bound to our 'normal' aging rules though. Ackbar dies of old ages, Wedge retires, etc. Now...what do you think? What should be done with this...'problem?' Should we leave a gap like we do now with the Legacy comics? Simply leave the period of 40 aby-130 aby open for your imagination? I feel the Star Wars franchise (at least, the books) are nearing an end. Although I love the stories, I just...can't handle the way 'our movie heroes that started it all' are treated. PS: Don't know if this is supposed to be in the Kavar corner. It's pretty...serious... adamqd
Harrison Ford is 65 in real life and doesn't look much different to that picture, but I get what your saying, although, Luke and Leia will look better, as is the way with Jedi. Regarding starting a fresh, some people refuse anything that isn't deeply routed in the OT, Characters or otherwise, I guess the publishers are scared of killing off/Retiring these selling points. But I think there tackling this with the end of the Legacy of the Force Series, with Luke's wishes to pass on the torch to another Master, Mara Jades death, Jacen's fall, Ben's acceptance of the Force and his being a Jedi, another Civil War... It's shaping up for another series of novel's, whether or not these would sell without the Main Characters? Who knows.(Being as these books are a direct link to the original story) Personally I'm not too bothered about there age, as Long as they keep releasing good stories. we've got another 100 years till the onset of the Legacy Comics, so they Can't survive till then... I hope Jacen does though.
Miltiades
About the age: Yoda was more than 800 years and he still was better than most Jedi and Sith who were much younger. Same with Dooku. But I agree that it's time to let the main characters of the movies go, it's time for a new generation (having already skipped one).

But that must have something to do with his species... Well, he "looked" old anyway, and that's what matters. We need new, younger heroes already. But it's not necessary to kill the old ones. Web Rider
Let me start with a statement: Does that look like your average 65-year old? http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/6702/Events/6702/Presenter_Micha_15199655_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Ford,%20Harrison%20(I) Currently 75, Harrison Ford has aged, though he looked older when he was 20 and younger when he was 50. You don't magically turn 60 and start rotting away, somebody in good health can look good well into their 80s. But I do agree with your general sentiments, and the sooner they do it, the easier it will be to transition to new characters. Though I wouldn't be surprised they follow in Marvel or DC's example where NOBODY every stays dead.
Miltiades
But that must have something to do with his species... Well, he "looked" old anyway, and that's what matters. That's why I gave Dooku as another example.
PoiuyWired
Well, technically the Galaxy far far away should have better medical and tech and makeup and plastic surgery that they would live longer and look younger.
Nancy Allen``
I think sooner or later the big three are going to need to be put aside for younger characters, particularly seeing as they have been involved in near every event to take place in the past fifty years. Though I do find it ironic how in the Star Wars films, if Luke had chosen to keep training with Yoda, nothing would have changed. He never would have gone to Bespin, or Endor, but the same result would probably happen. Still there's lots of other characters that can be used to carry the story, even at the sacrifice of L\H\L.Kyle Katarn scarcely needs Luke for example. Jae Onasi
There's a lot of fertile ground in the Kotor time of the SW universe, too. I think some of this may be due to the fact that people don't like seeing their best-loved heroes die. It was hard for me to watch Yoda die in RotJ. From a writing perspective, the deaths of Luke, Leia, and Han would have to be handled with great care. Few of us would want to see them die in some inglorious way, for instance. Their deaths would have to be as epic as their lives.
Tommycat
Future of characters like Luke Leia and Han: Honestly, I think they need to steer away from them. Perhaps Luke and Leia could end up having to go into exile for some reason. Then they don't have to kill them off. I guess that's part of why I like the KotOR era better. The main movie characters don't have to be either immortal, nor die. Still a bit mad about Chewie....

Corinthian
I bet you ten cents one of the three main characters doesn't survive Legacy of the Force. And maybe Lando, too.

Ctrl Alt Del
That's why I gave Dooku as another example. Okay, so it must be due to the Force influence. Nevertheless, it can't do Han any good.

In that case the galaxy would be destroyed before they were. I wonder if maybe they had gotten too big, that anything would be something of a cop out. We all learnt the lessons of making out something like TPM to be the biggest thing of all time, our expectations were simply too big to meet. Same thing here, because of how big, how involved the characters have become, how can you give them a proper send off? Though a nice twist would be to do a Vito Corleone, or Al Capone. YertyL
I've learned to pretty much ignore the post-RotJ EU. It is a silly place. What should I say? QFE While I find the Y.V. utmost silly (the marsians are attacking!), the idea I most deeply despise is the rebirth of the Emperor. Well, the SW movies are all about Anakin bringing balance to the Force by destroying the Sith, but never mind, we can resurrect them again... and again.. and again
Jasper_Kazai
I got to the fourth or so book in the Vong series and just quit. It was getting really boring and stupid. It's like they tried to smash Star Wars and Star Trek together. It just doesn't work for me.
Miltiades
Okay, so it must be due to the Force influence. Nevertheless, it can't do Han any good. No, that is true. But I was more replying to you saying that Luke still could defeat Jacen at his age, which is, IMO, perfectly possible.
adamqd
agreed. Post ROTJ Luke Skywalker is the most powerful Force user, and at the age of 79 Dooku held of three and defeated 2 of the "prime of the Jedi's" best... and Dooku is no Luke Skywalker, so IMO it's completely plausible for a 59 year old Luke to be still kickin some serious ass
PoiuyWired
Well, Luke is probably not going to look much older, keyword being "look" which can be decieving since these are altered by technical/mystical means, or by simply makeup or Force Nip/Tuck, the ULTIMATE force power invented by Leia. Hack, Kreia/Lumiya/palpy even would probably turn to the light side if such power exists.
HerbieZ
It's best not to look into the mortality of fictional characters. The human brain has an odd way of trying to comprehend it all.
