I posted this sketch before but thought I'd share it here too. I tried to predict what Guybrush would look like based on Rex's previous art. I'm probably way off, but fun to guess. ๐8 points

I think at the very least we can not essentially ban ReMI threads existing independently of the generic ReMI thread by merging them, but instead let them live and die on their own merits. I suspect or at least hope โis Ron a liarโ would come and go pretty quickly. ๐ We could still merge similar ones together, for example if people started creating entirely new threads for each piece of fan art, it would make sense to fold them into a more generic fan art thread. Certainly I think the main ReMI thread has fantastic moments but is also becoming impenetrable, which will mean interesting threads of discussion get under-discussed because people canโt deal with the constant onslaught of replies (I have seen feedback from multiple people now to this effect). For example, we might still be speculating about the chef being hidden in the background of the trailer and other fun details if that had been its own occasionally bumped thread, but instead that moment came and went in a heartbeat and is now buried under a million replies. Someone passing by a few days or even weeks later just misses out. Just look at how the Amiga thread is the gift that keeps on giving.3 points

The way that one samples Murray repeatedly saying "Ron Gilbert..." "Ron Gilbert... told.. me" is baffling. Wouldn't be MI fan art without weird choices though. This one showed up a couple weeks after the trailer and made me happy. Also theres this, which showed up early too:3 points

Youโve all seen this, right? I find the start a little slow personally, but it picks up massively after a minute, and then when the falling theme came inโฆ ๐ฉ3 points

Yeah, I think people will get themselves twisted into knots trying to reconcile everything Ron's said in the past. I think the tossing of Murray into water mid-sentence in the trailer was a very pointed statement about more than just what he said about owning the rights, it was everything he's said up until this point. It was Ron's way of saying "yes, I know what I said, I've said a lot of things, forget about it." That's what it communicated to me, at least. Gahhh, I just want more content, gimme!3 points

It's basically as I've been saying, the real answer is probably complicated and half lost to time. Do I think they had a detailed idea of what MI3 was going to be? No, and I don't think they've ever really claimed that. Do I think they had multiple ideas? Yes, they've said as much. Do I think Ron probably thought about the story more than "guybrush goes to hell and stan is there?" Yes. I mean, *I've* thought about it more than that, and it's never even been my job to make it, so obviously he had lots of thoughts about where to possibly take it, both thematically and in terms of plot. It would have been impossible not to. Do I think Ron remembers all the ideas he had for MI3 in 1992 and who he might have talked about them with and in how much detail and what order? No. I don't believe most people are capable of recalling a brief period of their life 30 years ago with that much clarity. And ultimately, it doesn't matter. It's not lying to say that he never had a direction for MI3. It's not lying to say he had a basic storyline. These things are compatible because as he's consistently said, the initial thoughts you have don't amount to a story or a design or a direction, they're just a starting point and during the process of creation things become formed. It's also natural for him to want to downplay the importance of those early ideas because they have become irrelevant in the face of what he's decided to make now. Why would he want to say 'yeah we had all these cool ideas for where to take it' if he knew that if he ever got to make a new MI he wouldn't be using them? The only Monkey Island game that actually matters, ultimately, is the one we're getting.3 points

Wow, didn't expect this kind of response, thanks! Alright, if it's okay with the mods, I'll add a PayPal donation link to the opening post. It'll only stay up as long as it's needed. EDIT: Here we go! I've refrained from putting it in the opening post, so that no one thinks this is general payment for the poster project itself (greetings, Disney lawyers!). The funding goal is set to 75 EUR, so that it only covers the costs of the map. As a side note: Collecting money to acquire a map feels very adventure-game-appropriate.2 points

I think it might be better to just let multiple Return subthreads branch out in the main forum for now, and then create a sub forum once people want to cordon off spoilers? (Only suggesting that option to avoid having to split things TWICE once spoiler time hits.)2 points

I don't really find any of these quotes to be contradictory. He summed it up perfectly in his most recent blog post: "The muse comes when the work starts". You don't start with a perfectly formed idea.2 points

Thanks for doing so. And Iโm sorry this happened. @KestrelPi, buy this guy a coffee! He just caught a bullet for you. ๐2 points

I think to give it a kinder read, though this part: I think he's trying to say go for the ideas that both FEEL right, and have a purpose, but also are likely to produce this effect. That's what I want to take away from this. Because I really think the best creators aren't thinking 'ah, how can I piss people off next' but rather they have, over time, developed intuitions about where to take the work that pushes it in interesting directions - which sometimes results in making controversial choices. Even so though, I think the best thing to do is not try to guess at how people will respond to the choices made. I don't think it's very healthy to use your imagined audience's response as a sort of barometer for how good the idea is. That to me feels as off as trying to be crowd pleasing or deliberately contrarian. It makes one very curious about where this next Monkey Island will take us, since he's already talked about how he thinks it'll piss some people off, but I guess there's just no way of telling until we see it for ourselves.2 points

It has been validly pointed out that having just one absolutely humongous thread for Return to Monkey Island discussion is perhaps getting a bit much. For now, weโre going to encourage breaking it out into other threads of discussion, as thereโs certainly enough to talk about to fill a hundred threads. This one is for fan work! Post your or anybody elseโs lovely art, music, fiction, games, and anything else created in celebration of Return to Monkey Island. (Ideally we keep this to ReMI-related stuff otherwise weโll just be posting decades of creations, but I guess any stuff created during the ReMI hype is all good.)1 point

Hey! Hey, since I saw the Is Ron just lying post merged with the Return to Monkey Island thread (interesting topic btw!), I wanted to mention something I had on my mind for a bit: I wish we would start creating new threads instead of talking about everything in here. The more pages the ReMI thread gets the less I'm interested in participating or reading. Idk what do others feel about that? Is there even the desire or option to create a Monkey Island sub forum?1 point

I really like this, it looks very guybrushy and it combines the familiar look&feel with the new art style. There might be a reason why we didn't see Guybrush yet, maybe he's undead and a ghost/zombie pirate after what happened in Lechuck's Revenge (tm). Ron said this is going to be an E-ticket ride. I hope it's not getting too weird and we'll still get a normal story + adventure. Also they mentioned in an interview that the games reflected their current life. When they began making games and working at lucasfilm Guybrush wanted to be a pirate, very young and naive. Now they are older and maybe Guybrush got older too.1 point

Thatโs a hurdy-gurdy! I think itโs quite popular in the Sea of Thieves world (Iโm not really a player, I have only played it a few times, but I have seen a few videos where itโs used).1 point

I'm happy to chip in for that map. If anyone else joins, hooray! If not, DM me anyway.1 point

It sounds reasonable to me, at least during the current wave of hype. It can always be collapsed back into the main forum if/when things quieten down again.1 point

I donโt read it as such. When heโs saying โdonโt be afraid to enrage your audienceโ, I think what he means is, donโt let expectations of others cloud the idea you have. In a time in which he has to close down the comments to his blog because of other peoples expectations, this rules more true than ever. I agree with the rest he says about art having to be challenging.1 point

It's interesting to hear people's take on what Ron said about endings, because I came to a different conclusion. My interpretation is not so much that you have to make something polarizing, but that if you have an idea that is wildly different, the potential for fracture in audience response shouldn't sway your decision to commit to that idea. I think what Ron said sends a message of honouring your own voice above trying to please everyone by making something generic and safe, not that you should go out of your way to make something terrible or controversial for the sake of it.1 point

I know I've quoted this before, but here's Ron talking in 2013. He started work on Thimbleweed Park in 2014...1 point

First things first: please put my quoted comment in spoiler tags, I wouldnโt want people who havenโt played the ending to read that. Back on the off topic: Anyway, itโs nice to hear a different opinion on it. Some things resonate differently with different people I guess. With me it even changes with the way I go into a product. My opinions have been known to change based on second viewings/playthroughs. Back on the on topic: Iโm curious to what Ron will come up with this time! I doubt RMI will end in any way that we expect! This will be very likely! And maybe in 10 years weโll be talking about how the MI7 writers came up with a huge monologue by LeChuck where they try to overexplain the ending Ron set them up with. ๐1 point

Working with a rip of the map from the Geographicus site, I've come up with this approximation to the coloring of the map seen on the box and manual.1 point
