Disney: Don't make them like they used too...

Anyone remember the last time Disney made a movie that was actually a cartoon, instead of CG talking animals pretending to be Shrek?! I was watching Alladin again on DVD last night, and trying to figure out why they can't make movies as good as this anymore? Demographics? And forget about all these streight to DVD sequals they do like say.....Bambi II?! Yes, Grooves digs the classic Disney cartoons, and wished they would make something cool like Alladin, Jungle Book, or Beauty and the Beast again. Instead, all we get is CGI talking animal movies like Finding Nemo, or Chicken Little. Lilo and Stich was not bad, but it's certainly not the calibur of Alladin right? Right now, we just sit around and wait for some of the greats to get re-released on DVD. What gives?

I agree with the fact that Disney makes horrible sequels, straight to DVD or otherwise, but with CG, the story remains the same. I for one think Disney should stop making kiddie cartoon movies entirely and make more films like pirates of the carribean, which was actually good, unlike anything else they spewed out.

Amen. I was watching Disney Channel the other time and I couldn't help but notice it. The very contrast of it all was astounding -

The older cartoons were so rich, so detailed and it was obvious that the people working on them had been doing something serious. It's still entertaining to watch those cartoons, like Alladin, Mickey Mouse & the rest, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King etc. Especially since the first cartoons a typical Indian kid like me sees are those classics.

The new cartoons are so ****ing ugly! They're just a collection of lines and dots and a bit of solid, computer colours. The characters don't even look human, or real anymore. Even the stories have run dry. The old cartoon stories were creative, and unique. Newer cartoons concentrate on few things other than physical pain, silly jokes and intolerantly wild physics.

I'd like to say it, but the old cartoons were also very often double-edged. There was something there for adults to see in the movie as well. And the songs were better. And as Sabretooth pointed out, the older cartoons were much more ornate and detailed, by far much better in terms of artistry.

Or maybe I'm just turning old prematurely. Any moment now, I'll be going on about how summers aren't the same as they used to be.

The last animated thing Disney touched that didn't become a giant piece of crap was Krunks New Groove, the "sequel" to emperors New Groove that went straight to DVD.

Lilo and Stitch was good, but Emperors New Groove is still the best animated thing they've released in a long time.

The problem with disney was that they became complacent and started simply regurgitating their old films.

Most of the old films had a unique feel and vision to them... a lot of the new ones feel like generic repetitions of the same plots, just with slightly altered settings. And along the way they seem to have lots the creative visions who gave their films depth and heart. A lot of the new films obviously had skilled animators on them - but the overall vision was severely lacking.

One thing that i think majorly contributed to the downfall of the disney cartoon was when they started becomeing obsessed with celebrities. Instead of all the cool voice actors, who fitted their parts, from the old movies we got whoever was the latest star doing the voices of the main characters.

Also, much as i love aladin, I gotta say that Robin Williams did a lot of damage to the subsequent films. Lots of disney films had comedy sidekicks, but after alladin it became really generic and they just kept employing famous comedians who took over the whole film and often broke the third wall and suspension of disbelief by refering to modern events or stars.

The final thing that killed the movies for me was when they started getting famous singers to do all the music for the film. I think this started with Elton John for alladin and continused with phil collins. :( Songs in the old films used to be like true musicals in that they fitted into the feel and the narrative and were sung by the actors.

Songs in the new films have often felt seperate and tacked on. "hey kids, lets stop our adventure to listen to this elton john song!"

The CGI films weren't even made by disney, they were by Pixar. And you could tell that far more care and attention went into every part of them than any disney cartoon. The scripts, characters and acting for Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles were as good as any for a live action film. I'd go as far as to say that if they had made any of those films as a traditional 2d cartoon thye would have been just as good - and lightyears ahead of the disney hand drawn cartoons.

Disney's own attempt at CGI (Chicken little) as well as other's attempts (Shark Tale, Antz, Madagascar, Ice Age 2, etc..) have shown that it isn't the 3D medium that makes the films great, it is pixar's inventiveness, care and devotion. And films like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Belleville Rendevouz have shown that it wasn't that the 2D medium was dead - it was that disney had lost it's connection with it.

(And we won't even start on the massacres Disney made of some older Miyazaki cartoons before Pixar stepped in and rescued those too. :( )

There are some stunning 2d animatiors out there.. disney should be hiring them and letting them fullfill their visions - instead of trying to repeat it's same tired formula over and over again.

PS/ Jungle Book rules all!! ;)

Pixar is unstoppable.

Pixar films succeed because they have heart. Most others are just soul-less attempts at art.

Disney without Pixar blows.

New Disney cartoons suck.

Last few good films were Mulan and Emperor's New Groove, and Lilo and Stitch.

*goes and watches Lion King, Finding Nemo, and Pinocchio.*

Hrm.... I liked Little Mermaid and Aladdin when I was little but doubt I would now. I love Lion King and Tarzan. Lion King is my all time favorite Disney movie. The sequels (like all of their sequels) suck. Mulan was alright, as was the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Most Pixar Disney stuff is great. Toy Story 1 & 2, the Incredibles, and Monster's Inc are my favs.

I must admit, Walt must be dancing breakdance in his grave instead of just plain old turning. We want good ole' Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie or The Mad Doctor! They are classics that should be seen by all generations at some time of their lives. Of course there are the newer Princess Rose, Fantasia and such, but the old ones are the best of the best.

Oh, and Shrek rules! *Runs away*

No one is too old for Disney.

No one.

I can show you the world

Shining, shimmering, splendid

Tell me, princess, now when did

You last let your heart decide?...

(However I must say, Alkonium, although Pirates of the Carribean is friggin awesome, I'll never forget those instant classics like Aladdin and The Lion King)

I'll tell you what disney did wrong.

High School Musical

It's the root of all evil on this earth, in other words, Saten loved it's little teeny boppers singing about getting their little blonde, anorixic heads in the game. Disney and all it's afficiates should be shut down for making such crap.

P.S. Yeah, all the new animation is crap too. What happened to all the hand drawn stuff? We loved those.

Agreed.

WHY are all my friends absolutely OBSESSED with this movie?! I watched the trailer and I refused to see it because it's incredibly obvious that the acting is horrible, the singing sucks, and the storyline is just plain stupid.

Sorry for sounding harsh, but that's how I feel.

I too miss the old Disney days. I miss how they used to put sexual innuendo into their movies. Like the naked woman in The Rescuers, the phallic on the cover of the Little Mermaid video, sex being spelled out in the Lion King, and Aladdin saying something about good teenagers taking off their clothes and other such things. Yep, those were the days. :)

On a more serious note, Disney needs to get their act together. I'm somewhat suprised that they haven't somehow tried to remake their old classics with CG technology. Either that or somehow try to merge The Lion King and Aladdin.

Why would they do that when they can make s***ty movies (that probably don't cost as much due to their s***iness) and make millions? I do miss the sexual innuendo though, it added a little bit of entertainment to the two or so hours I'd have to put up with them when my little brothers/niece/nephew still watched the older ones.

Like someone else mentioned, the difference with Disney and Pixar is heart. Pixar is for the time being still putting effort into their movies, giving them great plots, memorable characters, and a touching story that is funny for all ages throughout.

Disney's problems with their latest films such as Home on the Range, Chicken Little, Valiant, etc. is that they have taken out all semblance of anything that actually makes an entertaining movie. Rather than the hour and a half to two hour masterpieces of old, they are punching out simple, colorful, 70 minute flicks that have little to no substance to them.

Yeah, there are a few good one liners per film, and they are certainly colorful, but they are now trying too hard to make the comedy like The Emperors New Groove. Everything's a fast moving quip dripping with sarcasm. Problem is, the entire movie needs that attitude to work, and it needs a bit of deapth to accompany the comedy.

When I see a disney movie advertised under 90 minutes, I don't want to even bother.

And yeah, my little brothers, ages 6 and 8 unanimously agree that Valiant was the worst animated movie ever.
