The Official Christmas Thread

Talk about anything to do with Christmas here! I know it is only the 11th of November, but for all those who believe that Christmas is their favourite holiday, like me, you can talk about your Christmas plans, what you want to get and anything else to do with Christmas.

Hopefully, we can start decorating the house on the first Saturday of December, which is the 2nd of December. So talk about Christmas here and your future plans.

OK, first of all, it's Armistice Day, so discussing Christmas could be seen as a little inappropriate.

Secondly, We are over a month away.

Third, it's not about gifts.

Fourth, emphasising the commercialisation of what is fundamentally a religious festival seems somewhat shallow, IMO.

You did say discussion about 'anything to do with' Christmas ;)

Okay, there may be a simple point of confusion here. But lets not start a flame war on a potencially amazing threead.

@DarthInsidious. With respect, yes i had my two minutes silence at 11 but the day is'nt about standing still and remembering for 24 solid hours. Also, i think your right, it's not just about gifts but it's about what we ALL make of it. However shallow our perceptions on christmas seem for me, it's about being with the family... and gifts. :smash:

@Thread

Not much on my christmas list this year.

Star Trek Legacy (PC)

Star Trek Ships of the Line book

lol that's it so far. Im not fussy :p

We put our decs up on the Saturday closest to the 12th of December as Zalatasarii tradition dictates.

We're a tad too early for Christmas, aren't we? Must have started snowing up there...

I'd like a great computer and any of these games:

F.E.A.R.

Need For Speed: Carbon

Civilization IV: Warlords

Call of Duty 2

Star Wars: Empire at War

I will, of course, never get them. And I'm not even a realist.

Actually it hasn't snowed up here. And yeah, it is a bit early (I was going to start this Thread in September, believe it or not), but I thought we could all use this Thread to discuss our Christmas plans, etc. I will be spending time with my family on Christmas and I won't be online for Christmas Day and possibly Boxing Day. For me, Christmas is one of the greatest times of the year, because we can all look back at the year and think of all the good times and look foward to the upcoming year ahead. And soon after Christmas, it will be my first anniversary of being on LF for a year.

IMO, it was a good idea to start this thread now, this way every one will have plenty of time to comment on the subject.

I have always had a strange tradition. Every year I watch a tape that has some of the old claymation and animation Christmas shows.

They Were:

Frosty The Snowman (animation)

Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer (claymation)

Twas The Night Before Christmas (animation)

A Charlie Brown Christmas (animation)

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (animation)

California Raisins Christmas Special (claymation/musical)

A Christmas Story (movie, about the Red Rider BB Gun)

plus old TV comercials from 1989

Strange? Yes, but I have watched this tape every year since I was 5yrs old.

Hmm, not much on my list:

WWE SmackDown Vs RAW 2007 (PS2)

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Force Action Lightsaber

And possibly:

Need for Speed : Carbon (PC)

Eragon (PC)

Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC)

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC)

And yeah, it ain't about the gifts, it's about spending time with our family, and that is what i will do, spend time with my family. I don't usually see any Christmas films, but there's a channel here, SIC, which usually shows many Christmas movies.

Darth Maul Shadow Hunter is a good choice of book. I won't wreck it, but the first two Chapters might be a bit boring though. I'm going to ask for the Darth Bane book too.

Also, I won't be online Christmas Day (Spending time with family) and possibly Boxing Day, but hopefully after that, I shall return.

Christmas wishes:

1.For my kids not to ask for anything expensive since we've had to do major repairs in our kitchen after the upstairs toilet leaked and made the kitchen ceiling fall in (very nearly on my head).

2. For my shopping to be done with very quickly. I hate shopping at Christmas-time. I'm not a lover of shopping to begin with (I know that's not very American female, but what can I say), but I dislike it when I have to stand in line with 80,000 other people to get the stuff and then stand in line at the cash register to buy the stuff. Ugh.

"Traditions" in the Jimbo/Jae household:

We usually get our tree the weekend before Christmas and decorate it instead of right after Thanksgiving, because we like to keep ours up until Jan. 6. Also, with a couple cats who like to climb, it minimizes the number of chances that the tree will end up on the ground if we have it up for 2 weeks instead of 4 or so. :) When we have the time, we decorate the house with lights--we haven't been able to the last couple years with Jimbo gone on active duty and me dealing with a knee problem that precluded climbing ladders last year, but hopefully this year we can decorate again. We put a nativity set up on the front lawn since it's important to us to keep in mind the real purpose of the season.

We decorate inside the house, too--that I usually start after Thanksgiving. I pull out all the home decor, put on some of the Christmas music (the Agnus Dei Christmas musical by Michael W. Smith is one of my favorites, along with Handel's Messiah and a selection of Christmas carols by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir), and we go to town. We put a little village up on the fireplace mantle and a creche set in a prominent spot--varies by year. :) We decorate the rooms and put a wreath up on the door. I buy an Advent calendar every year--the kids get to alternate opening a door every night for the latest verse or saying.

From Thanksgiving on it's a bake-fest at our home--cookies, breads, fudge, you name it, we make it and either eat it or give it away to friends and family. The kids are old enough now to really enjoy decorating the sugar cookies and putting the candied cherries on the cherry cookies. We have to have a good selection of cookies for Santa, you know. :D Of course, we're lucky if any of them make it to the freezer for Chrismas Eve--usually I end up baking another batch or 2 of something on Christmas Eve Day.

On Christmas Eve we either go to the service at our church, or I'll go to Midnight Mass with my dad and stepmother. If we go to the afternoon service, we go as a family, but for Mass I usually go alone and Jimbo stays home with the kiddos since they're too young to stay awake that late. Since I'm not Catholic I get a little lost on when to sit, stand, and kneel, but it's just a beautiful service and a great way to start Christmas Day. Some time after dinner on Christmas Eve we read the Christmas story out of Luke and open our gifts to each other, and it's certainly fun to see how the kiddos react to their gifts--that's one of the best parts for us. Over the Christmas week we'll usually watch A Charlie Brown Christmas (my fav), Rudolph (Jimbo's fav) as well as A Muppet Christmas Carol (Light the lamp, not the rat!) and the Veggie Tales Christmas video (the kids' favs).

Christmas Day we adults like to sleep in, but the kids never make it past 7am or so before having to go see what's in their stockings. We'll have a nice breakfast and then get ready for the big family celebration with the rest of my relatives. We usually go to my Aunt's house for Christmas day since she's got the most room to host all our families, and she loves the entertaining. The party usually breaks up early evening because a lot of the kids are still fairly young (most are still 10 or less), so once we get home and unload all the bags of stuff from the van, we usually just mellow out and help the kids with some of their toys, listen to more Christmas music, drink a little eggnog or something equally rum-laced, try out the new PC games we got for each other, and generally just have a good time. We try to relax the rest of the week after--I never shop the day after Christmas unless forced to. :)

New Year's eve we spend at home. We toast the new year but with 2 young ones, it's too much of a pain to find a babysitter and go out partying so we just watch the celebrations on TV and sip a little champagne, and then go check out the computer games again. It's not terribly exciting, but then again we don't have to worry about a designated driver and New Year's day hangovers, either. :D

New Year's Day is parade and football day, and we're hoping Ohio State will be vying for the National Championship this year--go Buckeyes! After that, it's back to the typical Wisconsin winter activities, depending on how much snow is on the ground at that point.

We're looking forward to the time with family and friends, and the kids are looking forward to the Christmas presents, of course. :)

Path of Destruction is a real good book, IMO. I don't think you will be disappointed.

...all I want for X-mas is my KoTOR 3.

That would be a nice surprise.

I would like to get one of the new game systems, problem is I haven't made up mind yet.

Xmas list:

Upgrades to my computer (No, I'm not one of those people who likes to buy a new computer every time I want an upgrade. Although an Alienware would be nice...)

Red vs. Blue season 1 DVD (I have all of the other seasons)

3D Studio Max 9 (@jmac: We all dream)

A pre-order of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition from Gamestop.

A larger 360 hard drive if the rumors are true.

@Bane: I recommend a 360.

Bah, my parents have had to wake me up for the past 3 years.

On a positive note I've managed to alienate all the relatives on my Mom's side of the family, so I won't be spending any time with them. Theres some Minnesota Nice for you Mother****er.

At Christmas time, well the last two yeasr have been fun because I made new acquaintances at work. Twice I have been invited to Dr. Lou Fernandez's home for his annual Christmas party. We socialize, eat and have fun with the White Elephant exchange. My boss takes us out to lunch, the one time I don't have to pay for it!

At home, we do moderate home decorating since our house is small. We usually decorate the top of the TV stand with a Nativity, well all the ones that will fit. My mother collects Nativity and she has some from around the world. One is from El Salvador or Peru. I can't remember. We then watch Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and if we are lucky, see on TV the Little Drummer Boy.

At Church I sing with the Christmas choir at &pm or midnight mass depending on who's working or not.

With the whole family we have the Posadas. We do the procession of Mary and Joseph, say the rosary and then party time with tamales, frijoles and rice. There is also nachos and nopales, the works. Then we do the gift exchange. We do it secret santa like since there are so many of us. Of course I always get to see my padrinos. This year there is talk of going to San Diego to celebrate since my uncle suffered a stroke earlier this year.

As to gifts, I haven't asked for anything since I left for college. Never expected anything but just made personal lists and see if I could afford it. It is always appreciative when you get a new package of socks though :) I do give my family gifts though. There is one thing that I really want and that is a DVD version of The Marine. But I have my accounts online to be able to get ahold of that since it is WWE. :xp:

Most of the time I just go on with life and remember the spirit of Christmas; that it's not all commercialization but the time and cheer you spend with loved ones.
