Sabretooth
Mmm, my Star Wars history ran a little reverse of most of the people here, meaning that I saw TPM and AotC several times before getting me hands on the OT. I didn't really get the connection at first, even though I saw the similarity. I remember thinking of the possibility once in AotC and wondering why Palpatine would be masquerading as Darth Sidious and why he named himself the Emperor later. And then I saw the Star Wars databank and it all came to light. So I guess I'll go with Episode II.

Titanius Anglesmith
It was pretty clear that Sidious' and Palpatine's voices were identical through most of the movie, but I don't see how anyone couldn't have figured it out from - Yoda: "Always two there are. No more, no less. A master and an apprentice." Windu: "But which was destroyed? The master or the apprentice?" *Big, dramatic close-up of Palpatine's face while mysterious music plays*
The_Catto
^^^ haha, yeahp. If that wasn't a "Hey! We're just showing you Palpatine, but it's NOT for any specific reason. Especially not in a 'zOMG, BiG hiNt SpoiLEr!' type of way!" I don't really know what is.
CommanderQ
Episode 1 was the pretty obvious episode for Palpatine. The name was obviously a dead give-away. You'd have to be a recent newbie to the Star Wars galaxy to have not noticed Palpatine. Though it was still fun despite knowing what was going to happen. Commander Obi-Wan
I'd probably say at the end of Episode II. Like Sabre, I didn't really watch the OT until after I went to see Episode I & II a few times.
Endorenna
Oh, as soon as he came on the screen in TPM. (The nose was a dead give-away! ) And there was some line in AoTC that made me all the more secure in my recognition. I don't remember what it was...some line about it would be a tragedy to lose Padme'.
Darth333
Oh, as soon as he came on the screen in TPM. (The nose was a dead give-away! )My thoughts exactly...like Blaise Pascal said about Cleopatra's nose: "had it been shorter, the whole face of the world (galaxy in this case) would have been changed" . Edit: otherwise, EP5...if you want to go for the explicit way and chronological order of the movies' release dates.
Achilles
Episode 5 when they introduced him for the first time. Clearly this thread is intended for younglings that saw the movies in sequential order rather than chronological order of release. Pretty sure anyone of my generation (or older) recognized Senator Palpatine immediately in Episode 1.
The Doctor
I had my suspicions as soon as I got a good look at Senator Palpatine's face, but what really sold me on the thought was at the very end of Phantom Menace, when he refers to Anakin as "Young Skywalker". I got chills. Clearly this thread is intended for younglings that saw the movies in sequential order rather than chronological order of release. Pretty sure anyone of my generation (or older) recognized Senator Palpatine immediately in Episode 1. How do you figure? I gathered that the original poster is asking people how long it took them to discover for themselves who would become the Emperor they had already seen in the OT. I had never read any material regarding Star Wars as a kid - I only watched the movies, and left it at that; and I'm sure I'm not the only one. SW01
From Amidala's line "Senator Palpatine?" as his communication breaks up. Recognied the name Palpatine, and Sidious bore a stark resemblance to the Emperor... BTW - saw the OT first!
Hayden Kered
Those of us that have seen the OT first, we already knew who the Emperor was, so when watching the PT we got the pleasure of watching him turn from "Mr. Nice Guy" to the old dude who can shoot lightning from his hands! vanir
Other. You wouldn't believe me if I told you. Let's say...I realised somewhere around the early 80's. When I was in primary school Star Wars was somewhat of a popular movement. Much of what is now on the Star Wars Database, first appeared on swap cards, back then. Backgrounds of Yoda, Boba Fett, Emperor Palpatine, etc.
Astrotoy7
lolz, prequel trilogy noobs. How about 1977 'The Star Wars - From The Adventures Of Luke Skywalker' - A novel by George Lucas (1977) Prologue - First Saga, Journal of The Whills ..Aided and abetted by restless, power hungry individuals, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the people and to restore the glory of the Republic. Once in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears. mtfbwya
Ztalker
Yeah, I watched the OT before the PT too. It's a dead give away if you check the remastered hologram of Palpatine in ESB. They inserted Ian McDarmid's face there. And when he comes on screen in Episode 1, it was obvious it was him. His twirling eyes when saying "someone strong should be elected...but who?" gave me the connection Sidious-Palpatine-Emperor in episode 1. So...probably 1999. EDIT: Was still doubting a bit, but his face when accepting 'emergency powers' in Episode 2 proved my theory. That's when you get when you hire Shakespearian actors. JediAthos
I knew what his name was from reading some of the books so when I saw the character appear in episode 1 I was like...ohhh so that's where he came from.
Miltiades
I was ten when 10-11 when I saw TPM, but I immediately made the link between Palpatine and Darth Sidious. Hadn't watched the OT at that time. After I watched the OT not long after, I knew he was the Emperor.
