When I realized it I really didnt know anything about Star Wars, so I didnt realize it till the end of Attack of the Clones when he stood on the balcony overlooking the clones.(Im Slow) and really I didnt notice my friend blurted it out "He is the Emperor!" in the middle of the theater.

Anyway when did you realize it?

Episode 1. Recognized his face.

Might be a good idea to put some spoiler warnings on this, though.

Done....Sorta cant edit title and its a bit much to have the whole first post in spoiler tags, and no names where said yet.

Mmm, my Star Wars history ran a little reverse of most of the people here, meaning that I saw TPM and AotC several times before getting me hands on the OT. I didn't really get the connection at first, even though I saw the similarity. I remember thinking of the possibility once in AotC and wondering why Palpatine would be masquerading as Darth Sidious and why he named himself the Emperor later.

And then I saw the Star Wars databank and it all came to light. So I guess I'll go with Episode II.

It was pretty clear that Sidious' and Palpatine's voices were identical through most of the movie, but I don't see how anyone couldn't have figured it out from -

Yoda: "Always two there are. No more, no less. A master and an apprentice."

Windu: "But which was destroyed? The master or the apprentice?"

*Big, dramatic close-up of Palpatine's face while mysterious music plays*

Oh, as soon as he came on the screen in TPM. (The nose was a dead give-away! :xp:)
My thoughts exactly...like Blaise Pascal said about Cleopatra's nose: "had it been shorter, the whole face of the world (galaxy in this case) would have been changed" .

Edit: otherwise, EP5...if you want to go for the explicit way and chronological order of the movies' release dates.

Episode 5 when they introduced him for the first time.

Clearly this thread is intended for younglings that saw the movies in sequential order rather than chronological order of release. Pretty sure anyone of my generation (or older) recognized Senator Palpatine immediately in Episode 1.

I had my suspicions as soon as I got a good look at Senator Palpatine's face, but what really sold me on the thought was at the very end of Phantom Menace, when he refers to Anakin as "Young Skywalker". I got chills.

How do you figure? I gathered that the original poster is asking people how long it took them to discover for themselves who would become the Emperor they had already seen in the OT. I had never read any material regarding Star Wars as a kid - I only watched the movies, and left it at that; and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Other. You wouldn't believe me if I told you. Let's say...I realised somewhere around the early 80's.

When I was in primary school Star Wars was somewhat of a popular movement. Much of what is now on the Star Wars Database, first appeared on swap cards, back then. Backgrounds of Yoda, Boba Fett, Emperor Palpatine, etc.

lolz, prequel trilogy noobs.

How about 1977 :p

'The Star Wars - From The Adventures Of Luke Skywalker' - A novel by George Lucas (1977)

Prologue - First Saga, Journal of The Whills

..Aided and abetted by restless, power hungry individuals, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the people and to restore the glory of the Republic. Once in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears.

Yeah, I watched the OT before the PT too.

It's a dead give away if you check the remastered hologram of Palpatine in ESB. They inserted Ian McDarmid's face there.

And when he comes on screen in Episode 1, it was obvious it was him.

His twirling eyes when saying "someone strong should be elected...but who?" gave me the connection Sidious-Palpatine-Emperor in episode 1. So...probably 1999.

EDIT: Was still doubting a bit, but his face when accepting 'emergency powers' in Episode 2 proved my theory. That's when you get when you hire Shakespearian actors.
